INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing Step & Learn ScoutTM! Go for a walk with Scout and listen to letter and number songs by pushing him with the leash. Then sit and play by pressing the buttons on Scout’s backpack to learn numbers, letters and letter sounds.

WARNING: All packing materials, such as tape, plastic sheets, packaging locks, removable tags, cable ties and packaging screws are not part of this toy, and should be discarded for your child’s safety.
NOTE: Please keep this parent’s guide as it contains important information.
Unlock the packaging locks:
- Rotate the packaging locks 90 degrees counterclockwise.
- Pull out the packaging locks and discard.
GETTING STARTED
BATTERY INSTALLATION
- Make sure the unit is turned OFF.
- Locate the battery cover on the bottom of the unit.
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw and open the battery cover.
- Install 3 new AAA (AM-4/LR03) batteries into the battery box as illustrated. (The use of new alkaline batteries is recommended for maximum performance.)
- Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw to secure.
BATTERY NOTICE
- Use new alkaline batteries for maximum performance.
- Use only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended.
- Do not mix different types of batteries: alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or rechargeable (Ni-Cd, Ni-MH), or new and used batteries.
- Do not use damaged batteries.
- Insert batteries with the correct polarity.
- Do not short-circuit the battery terminals.
- Remove exhausted batteries from the toy.
- Remove batteries during long periods of non-use.
- Do not dispose of batteries in fire.
- Do not charge non-rechargeable batteries.
- Remove rechargeable batteries from the toy before charging (if removable).
- Rechargeable batteries are only to be charged under adult supervision.
ASSEMBLY

Insert and snap the leash into the handle.

Snap the leash into the slot in Scout’s backpack.

Tighten the screw with a Phi l ips screwdriver. Do not over-tighten.
Note: Scout works with and without the leash. To remove Scout’s leash, simply unscrew it and keep the leash and screw away from children.- Tool needed: Phillips screwdriver (not included)
CAUTION: This package contains a small screw.

On/Off/Volume Control Switch
Slide the On/Off/Volume Control Switch to turn the toy on and select the volume. -
Mode Switch
Slide the Mode Switch to choose Letters, Numbers or Fun with Scout mode. -
Music Button
Press the Music Button to hear three different songs. -
Heart Button
Press the Heart Button to hear Scout talk to you. -
Arrow Buttons
Press the Arrow Buttons to play activities in the different modes.
ACTIVITIES

Letters Mode
Slide the Mode Switch to choose Letters mode. Use the Arrow Buttons to scroll through the alphabet on Scout’s LED Backpack. Pushing Scout in Letters mode plays the ABC song. -
Numbers Mode
Slide the Mode Switch to choose Numbers mode. Use the Arrow Buttons to scroll through numbers 1-10 on Scout’s LED Backpack. Pushing Scout plays a numbers song. -
Fun with Scout Mode
Slide the Mode Switch to choose Fun with Scout mode. Use the Arrow Buttons to play silly sound effects and animations on Scout’s LED Backpack. Pushing Scout makes him talk and bark.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
- Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a slightly damp cloth.
- Keep the unit out of direct sunlight and away from any direct heat sources.
- Remove the batteries when the unit is not in use for an extended period of time.
- Do not drop the unit on a hard surface and do not expose the unit to excess moisture.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If for some reason the program/activity stops working, please follow these steps:
- Turn the unit OFF.
- Interrupt the power supply by removing the batteries.
- Let the unit stand for a few minutes, then replace the batteries.
- Turn the unit back ON. The unit will now be ready to play again.
- If the unit still does not work, replace it with an entire set of new batteries.
Environmental phenomena.
- The unit may malfunction if subjected to radio-frequency interference.
- It should revert to normal operation when the interference stops.
- If not, it may become necessary to turn the power OFF and back ON or remove and reinstall the batteries.
- In the unlikely event of an electrostatic discharge, the unit may malfunction and lose memory, requiring the user to reset the device by removing and reinstalling the batteries.
