Instructions Before Starting

Read all the Instructions for Care and Important Safety Instructions before using LeapReader®.

  1. POWER UP and charge your LeapReader® by connecting it to your computer via the included USB cable.
  2. SET UP your device by installing the LeapFrog Connect application at leapfrog.com/connect.
  3. REGISTER your device by creating a LeapFrog parent account.
  4. DOWNLOAD audio for your included books.
  5. PLAY & LEARN! Your child is now ready to read and learn with LeapReader®.

Get Started With Your Learn-to-Read Books

  1. After downloading the audio, press the On/Off Button to begin. The green power light will shine when the LeapReader® is on.
  2. To begin reading, touch the tip of the LeapReader® to an image or word in one of the included books.
  3. To listen to the included digital content sampler, touch the Home Button, then press the Play Button to hear a selection of audiobooks, music and trivia.

Download Audio for Other LeapReader® Books, Maps, and Games

  1. Touch a page on each LeapReader® book that you own.
  2. Double Check you have downloaded the LeapFrog Connect application. If LeapFrog Connect has not been downloaded, follow the instructions above to install it.
  3. Follow the instructions in the LeapFrog Connect application to set up your LeapReader® and download the audio for each of your books.
  4. Eject and disconnect the LeapReader® from your computer.
  5. To begin playing, simply touch the tip of the LeapReader® to an image or word in your LeapReader® book, map or game.

To Listen to Your Digital Content

  1. Press the On/Off Button to begin. The green power light will shine when the LeapReader® is on.
  2. To listen to audiobooks, touch the Home Button until you get to Audio Books mode. Press the Left or Right Button to scroll and select a title. Press the Play Button to hear the story.
  3. To listen to music, touch the Home Button until you get to Music mode. Press the Left or Right Button to scroll and select an album. Press the Play Button to hear songs.
  4. To listen to trivia challenges, touch the Home Button until you get to Trivia Challenge mode. Press the Left or Right Button to scroll and select an app. Press the Play Button to hear the selected app.

Troubleshooting

  • Problem
    LeapReader® does not turn on or does not respond.

  • Solution
    Make sure the On/Off Button has been pressed On.

  • Problem
    LeapReader™ operates erratically or makes loud noises.

  • Solution
    Make sure battery is fully chareed.

Instructions for Care

  • For Indoor, Dry-Location Use Only
    Do not use the product near a sink or other wet locations. Take care not to spill food or any kind of liquid on this product as it may render it inoperable and not serviceable. In case the unit does get wet, unplug all cables and turn it Off. Allow to dry thoroughly before reusing. Do not attempt to dry with a hair dryer or other heat source. Do not | re-connect to the AC outlet if wet or damaged.
    Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Operate in places with temperatures ranging from 5°C (40°F) to 38°C (100°F). Do not leave the product in your car as the temperatures in parked cars can exceed the acceptable storage temperature. Exposure to extreme temperatures can result in shortened battery life or cause the product to temporarily stop working.

  • Handle with Care
    To avoid injury, damage to this product or other property, avoid dropping and never disassemble, crush, puncture, microwave, incinerate, insert foreign objects or paint the product. Clean your hands before handing the product if they have been exposed to suntan lotions or other chemicals.

  • Cleaning
    Disconnect all cords before cleaning. Clean the product with a slightly damp cloth (cold water). Do not use soap, detergent, or other chemicals. Never submerge the unit in water. Allow to dry thoroughly before re-use. Do not connect to the AC outlet if wet or damaged

  • Using Connectors and Ports- Never force a USB or other connector into a port on the device. If the connector does not fit into the port, double-check the connector and port to ensure they match up and are positioned correctly, and make sure nothing is obstructing the port.

  • Environmental Phenomena — The LeapReader® may malfunction if subjected to radio-frequency interference. It should revert to normal operation when the interference stops. If not, it may become necessary to turn the power Off and then back On. In the unlikely event of an electrostatic discharge, the unit may malfunction and lose memory, requiring the user to reset the device by turning the power Off and then back On.

  • Static Electricity and Headphones— In certain dry environments, static electricity can build up in headphones and cause a small quick static discharge when plugging the headphones into a device. To avoid this static discharge from occurring, do not use in extremely dry environments or touch a grounded unpainted metal object to discharge static electricity before connecting the headphones to the device. Do not connect to the AC wall outlet if wet or damaged.

  • Repairing or Modifying the LeapReader® Device
    Never attempt to repair or modify as the LEAPREADER® device does not contain any user-serviceable parts. Service should only be provided by LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. If the product has been in contact with liquids, punctured, or subjected to a severe impact or fall, immediately remove this product from use and contact LeapFrog Consumer Services.

Important Safety Instructions

Please read all the Important Safety Instructions prior to using LEAPREADER®. Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in fire, electric shock, or other injury or damage to the LEAPREADER® device or other property.
Warning:

  • Adult supervision required at all times while children are playing with this product.
  • Not for children under 18 months.
  • The USB cable could be a strangulation hazard. Keep out of reach of children under 3 years of age. The USB cable should be used only by an adult when connecting to a computer and is to be removed by the adult prior to the use of the product by the child.
  • Routinely check this toy for proper and safe condition. If there is any damage or broken parts, remove toy from use.
  • Long-term exposure to loud sounds, at high volume, may result in permanent hearing loss. When using headphones or ear buds, it is recommended that the product is listened to at lower volumes for shorter periods. Set the volume while in a quiet environment; turn the volume down if you cannot hear people speaking near you. Limit the listening time to 90 minutes, followed by a quiet period. The louder the volume, the less time required before your hearing may be affected. If you experience ringing in your ears or hear muffled speech, stop listening and have your hearing checked.
  • All packing materials, including tape, plastic sheets, packaging locks, removable tags, cable ties, cords and packaging screws are not part of this toy, and should be discarded for your child’s safety.
  • Keep stylus tip away from eyes, nose, ears, and mouth.
  • Do not look directly into the stylus light.
  • To avoid choking, do not allow your child to eat or drink during play.
  • Parents of children with injuries or other limitations should consult a doctor before use.

Accessories

  • Read all safety instructions for any accessories or other products before using them with the LEAPREADER® device. LeapFrog is not responsible for the operation of accessories not manufactured or supplied by LeapFrog or their compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Battery Information

WARNING : The lithium rechargeable battery cannot be removed from the product and should only be replaced by LeapFrog. For your safety, never try to remove the battery. For more information about battery replacement service, go to: www.leapfrog.com/support
Battery Charging
The LEAPREADER® device is equipped with a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. The charge status LED is located near the USB jack on the back of the device. When the battery is charging, the charge indicator will display a solid yellow light. When fully charged and connected via the USB port, the charge indicator light will turn green. The charge indicator will be off if not connected via USB and if not charging. Only charge this device using the included USB cable connected to a computer. Do not charge using a third-party adapter. Before use, inspect the cord to confirm that it is in good condition and that there are no breaks or exposed wires. Ensure there are no particles or liquid (water, juice, etc.) in either of the connectors before plugging in either end of the cable. The device should be completely dry with no debris in the cable connectors when charging. Plug in the cable securely, in the correct orientation. If the device is on when plugged in, a dialog box may open on your computer to allow you to access the device’s drive. Never leave the device unattended while charging. Do not charge your device on soft surfaces, as they can trap heat around the device. Do not cover the device with anything such as a blanket, pillow or your child’s body. Never allow your child to sleep with or on the device while it’s charging. Typical charging time is between 3-5 hours if the battery is fully depleted. Disconnect the device when it is fully charged. Do not leave the device charging for more than 5 hours.
Disposal of Batteries and Product
The crossed-out wheelie bin symbols on products and batteries, or on their respective packaging, indicates they must not be disposed of in domestic waste as they contain substances that can be damaging to the environment and human health.
The chemical symbols Hg, Cd or Pb, where marked, indicate that the battery contains more than the specified value of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) or lead (Pb) set out in Battery Directive (2006/66/EC).
The solid bar indicates that the product was placed on the market after 13th August, 2005.

Optional AC Adapter Battery Charger
In order to try to achieve faster battery charging, an optional battery charger is available from LeapFrog.com or select retailers. The device is a custom AC Adapter equipped with a USB jack, designed expressly for recharging specified LeapFrog products. If this battery charger is used, the following additional battery charging instructions, cautions and warnings apply. Please note that due to various compliance requirements, the word “transformer” is sometimes substituted for “AC Adapter.”

AC Adapter (Transformer) Battery Charger Safety
CAUTION : Use only the recommended AC Adapter (transformer) for charging the battery. The device is a custom AC Adapter equipped with a USB jack, designed expressly for recharging specified LeapFrog® products. (Available at select retailers.)

  • Connection of the transformer to the wall outlet should be performed only by an adult.
  • The transformer is not intended to be used as a toy, and the use of the transformer shall be under the full supervision of parents.
  • As with all electrical products, precautions should be observed during handling and use to prevent electrical shock.
  • The AC Adapter may become warm during normal use. Always allow adequate ventilation and use care when handling the power adapter.
  • to not connect or disconnect with wet hands.
  • The transformer should be periodically examined for conditions that may result in the risk of fire, electrical shock or injury to persons, such as damage to the cord, plug, blades, housing or other parts. If any such conditions are present, the transformer must not be used. Dispose of a damaged or faulty transformer in accordance with your local electrical product recycling regulations.
  • Unplug the AC Adapter (Transformer) If Any of the Following Conditions Exist:
    • The power cord, plug or the USB cord has become frayed or damage.
    • The AC Adapter is exposed to rain, liquid, or excessive moisture.
    • The AC Adapter enclosure has become damaged.
    • You suspect the power adapter needs service or repair.
  • Disconnect the LEAPREADER® device from the transformer before cleaning.
  • To clean the transformer, disconnect it from the wall and clean with a cloth dampened with water. Do not immerse in water or use soap or other chemicals. Allow to dry before reusing. Do not connect to the AC outlet if wet or damaged.
  • For Europe—the LEAPREADER device must be used with a transfomer for toys.
    WARNING : Do not recharge non-rechargeable batteries.

USB Cable
Use only the USB cable provided by LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. The USB cable provided with this product complies with FCC and other regulatory emission limits. Using any other cable may exceed FCC and other regulatory emissions limits. The product must be used only with the recommended USB connection. The USB cable is not a toy. Disconnect the product from the USB connection before cleaning. USB connectors and cable used with the product must be regularly examined for damage to the cord, plug, and other parts and, in the event of such damage, the cable must not be used until the damage has been repaired.

This product is not intended for children under 3 years old.

WARNING: Cords are a strangulation hazard. Keep out of reach of children under 3 years of age. Children pulling on the cord could cause the computer monitor, TV or other equipment to which the device is connected to fall with the possibility of property damage, serious personal injury, or death. Adult supervision is required during play.
