Firmware version

These instructions apply to the firmware version “VD7_fw_v1.0.0” installed on this device or higher.

Before first use

Read this manual carefully through before using the device for the first time. Careful reading of this comprehensive instruction manual is the best way to familiarize yourself with all the functions of the visolux DIGITAL HD.

Safety information

  • Risk of glare and injury! Never look directly at the light source on the underside of the housing! Risk group 1 according to EN 62471: 2008. Exposure hazard value (EHV): 2200 seconds at 800 mm. The limit values of the exempt group are complied with at a distance of 1.8 m. Retinal danger due to actinic light 400 nm to 780 nm.
  • Do not allow children to handle electronic devices without supervision.
  • Only charge the reader with the mains adapter supplied!
  • Check your visolux DIGITAL HD and the mains adapter and its power cable for visible damage. If the visolux DIGITAL HD, the mains adapter or its cable are damaged, disconnect the mains adapter from the mains power immediately. Ask a qualified specialist to check the product before you use it again.
  • Never open the housing of the visolux DIGITAL HD. There are no serviceable parts whatsoever inside. Opening the device will void the guarantee.
  • Never expose the visolux DIGITAL HD to moisture.
  • Protect the visolux DIGITAL HD from knocks or blows and excessive heat! Never place the visolux DIGITAL HD on a heater or in direct sunlight!
  • The heat sink on the rear of the device dissipates the heat produced inside during operation. Considerable warming up is normal.
  • Ensure that other people, particularly children, are aware of these risks!

Operation

Charging the internal battery:

You must completely charge the internal batteries before you can use the visolux DIGITAL HD for the first time independently of the mains
power supply!
To charge, insert the charging cable plug into the connection for the mains adapter (3) on the visolux DIGITAL HD. Then connect the mains adapter with the adapter appropriate for the operating location and plug the mains adapter into a power outlet. Charging takes about 3 hours. The charging indicator LED (2) will light up red during the charging process. When the charging process is complete it will light up green. Disconnect the mains adapter from the power socket and the visolux
DIGITAL HD once charging is completed.

You can use the visolux DIGITAL HD during the charging process. Using the reader while charging will, however, prolong the charging time.

Switching on/off

Press and hold the On/Off button (15) for one second to switch the visolux DIGITAL HD on. The camera image will appear in live image mode on the display (14). 3 icons appear on the upper edge of the screen for approx. 2 seconds to indicate the battery charge level, the current zoom factor and the display brightness: The battery symbols have the following meanings:

Battery fully charged

75% charge

50 % charge

25 % charge

Battery empty

Press and hold the On/Off button for (15) for one second to switch the device off. The current zoom, screen mode and brightness settings will be saved.

To prolong the battery charge in the internal battery, the visolux DIGITAL HD switches off automatically if it is not moved for more than 5 minutes.
If you want to use the reader again after this time, switch it on again.

Reading with the device

Switch the visolux DIGITAL HD on, fold the stand foot (7) out and place the device over the reading material. The image of the area below the camera (11) is shown on the display (14). If you are using the device with the minimum zoom factor 2× you will see the complete image section of 7 cm on the display. If the zoom is increased, this image section will decrease.

DLS (Dynamic Line Scrolling)

Thanks to the scrolling function it is not necessary to move the entire device to one side in order to read a complete newspaper column, even at high zoom factors. Press the right-hand scroll button (1) repeatedly or keep it pressed down to move the image section to the right. Press the left hand scroll button (8) repeatedly or keep it pressed down to move the image section to the left.

Press the left hand scroll button twice quickly to move the image section to the left-hand border. This enables you to find the beginning of the next line quickly.

Start reading.

Tips to improve orientation:

The stand foot is provided with notches (A) which are arranged in alignment with the camera axis. You can use these notches to place the device over round objects more easily, for example to read ingredient information on tins etc.

You will find noticeable bulges (B) on the underside which mark the sideward limits of the visible area.

You will find noticeable markings (C) on the front side which mark the position of the camera on the underside.

Adjusting the zoom factor

When switched on, the camera image will be shown with the zoom factor you used the previous time you switched the device on. Press and hold the  button to increase the zoom up to factor 22×. Press and hold the    button to decrease the zoom down to factor 2×. You can also repeatedly press these buttons briefly to change the zoom factor.

False colour display

To show the camera image for contrast increase in false colour, press the button (16). If necessary, press this button repeatedly to switch through the various false colour modes and to return to true colour display. As delivered, the false colors are preset to b/w and w/b.

To set up further false colour displays, call up the false colour selection submenu. To do this press the MENU button (5), use the to scroll buttons (1,8) to move to the symbol and confirm your selection by pressing the button. After this, use the scroll buttons (1,8) to select the    symbol above and confirm this again with the button. You can activate the required false colour combinations using the two scroll buttons (1,8), and confirm the status change with the  button. Non-activated combinations are shown with an ×.

Press the MENU button (5), to close the settings menu.

Saving the live image as a file

Press the   button (k) briefly to show the current camera image on the display as a still image and to save it to the inserted SD card as a file. Press the button again to return to the live image display.

Calling up images from the SD card

To display images previously saved to the SD card, press and hold the button for 3 seconds or open the settings menu for this purpose described below using the MENU button (5) and the  symbol. The following menu appears:

The currently selected image file is displayed centrally below this. The previous image is shown to the left, the next image is shown to the right.
You can use the two scroll buttons (1,8) to select the individual symbols which have the functions described below:

– select the previous image file

– select the next image file

– select the currently selected file as a favorite. If you have not selected a favorite the symbol is crossed out.

Tip: The image file marked as favorite is always displayed centrally underneath the symbols when the menu is called up. For this reason, only one file can ever be marked as favorite.

– delete the selected image file from the SD card

– close the menu and return to live image view

The symbol for the selected function is always shown slightly larger. To activate the function you have selected, press the  button (17). To display the centre image file to fill the display, press the  button. You can use the and    buttons to set the required zoom factor.

You can move a zoomed-in image section to the side on the display using the two scroll buttons (1,8). If the zoom factor is set to 1× you can use the left-hand scroll button to jump to the previous image file and the right-hand scroll button to jump to the next image file.
If an image file is being shown at zoom factor 1× you can press the MENU button (5) to re-show the described 5 menu symbols. Press the button again to hide the symbols again.

Deleting image files
To delete the selected image file from the SD card, select the Delete symbol and confirm with the button (17). The confirmation symbol  is now shown bottom left on the display and the cancellation symbol  is shown on the right. You can use the scroll buttons (1,8) to select  or    . The selected symbol is always shown slightly larger. Press the    button to carry out the selected function.

Calling up the settings menu

Press the MENU button (5) to call up the first level of the settings menu:

You can use the two scroll buttons (1,8) to select the individual symbols which have the functions described below: The symbol for the selected function is always shown slightly larger and sometimes with a colour marking. To switch the selected function on or off, or to call up a  hidden submenu, press the button (17). You can also use the stated buttons to control the functions in the submenus.

You can quit the settings menu at any time by pressing the MENU button (5).

Switching reading guideline/line on/off
Select this symbol and then press the    button to switch the reading guideline/line on or off. You can adjust this more precisely later on the menu. If the reading aid function is switched on, the symbol    is displayed, if the function is switched off the symbol    is displayed.

Managing image files on the SD card
Select this symbol and then press the  button in order to call up the submenu described in the previous chapter. If you have called up image file management via the settings menu, you can use the  symbol to return to the first level of the settings menu.

Switching variable zoom on/off
Select this symbol and then press the   button to switch the variable zoom function on or off using the (12)    and  (13) buttons. If the function is switched on, the symbol  is displayed, if the function is switched off the symbol   is displayed.

Adjusting the reading material lighting
Select this symbol and then press the   button to adjust the reading material lighting using the following symbols:
– switch the complete LED lighting on or off

– only the bottom LED row is switched on

– the top LEDs right and left light up with half power

– the top LEDs right and left light up with full power

Confirm the selected lighting with the   button.
You can use the symbol    and confirm it with the   button to return to the first level of the settings menu.

Adjusting display brightness
Select this symbol and then press the  button to adjust the display
brightness using the following symbols:

– display brightness = 50 %

– display brightness = 75 %

– display brightness = 100 %

You can use the symbol  and confirm it with the    button to return to the first level of the settings menu.

Setting the confirmation signal
The sound setting currently selected is displayed as a symbol. Select this symbol and then press the  button to adjust the device signal tone using the following symbols:

– signal tone 1

– signal tone 2

– no signal tone

Once you have selected the required value the device will return to displaying the first menu level.

Switching split screen function on/off
Select this symbol and then press the    button to turn the split screen function on or off. This allows you to determine whether the built-in display is also shown if an HDMI device is connected. If the function is
switched on, the symbol  is displayed, if the function is switched off the symbol  is displayed.

If you switch this function on the refresh rate on both devices is reduced to 30 images per second. For this reason you should only activate the split screen if the additional display is absolutely necessary for orientation over the reading material.

Setting the reading speed
Select this symbol and then press the  button to set the reading speed for the DLS function (Dynamic Line Scolling) using the following symbols, in other words the advance speed with which the live image runs over the display when scrolling:

– low reading speed

– medium reading speed

– high reading speed

If you select these symbols using the scrolling buttons (1,8) the reading speed associated with the relevant symbol is shown as an example in the background.

Once you have selected the required value the device will return to displaying the first menu level. If you wish to return to the first stage of the setting menus without making changes, select the  symbol and then press the  button.

Select the  symbol and then press the    button to call up the second level of the settings menu:

Setting the reading guideline/line
Select this symbol and then press the  button to adjust the details
of the reading guideline or reading line using the following symbols:

– Move the reading guideline upwards or zoom the reading line in

– Move the reading guideline downwards or zoom the reading line out

– Switch the reading guideline/line on/off

– Switching between ‘red reading guideline’ or ‘reading line’

Use the  symbol to return to the settings menu.

Configuring the false colour display
Select this symbol and then use the  button to select the false colour display which should be available next time you pressed the    button (16). Black and white plus inversion are activated as standard. Non-activated combinations are shown with an ×.

Select the required combinations using the two scroll buttons (1,8) and use the  button to change their status.
Use the   symbol to return to the settings menu.

Setting the date and time
Select the symbol and then press the  button to set the date and time. Select the    symbol and then use the  button to increase the number of parameters shown in white. Select the  symbol and then use the  button to decrease the number of parameters shown in white. Select the    symbol and then press the button to select the next parameter for setting. Select “24H” and then press the   button to switch between 24-hour display and the 12-hour display usually used in English-speaking areas.

Alternatively, you can also use the button  (12) to increase the value of a selected parameter and the button     (13) to decrease it.
Use the  symbol to return to the settings menu.

Updating the firmware
Select this symbol and then press the    button to display the current version of firmware on the device and to update it if necessary. If you register your visolux DIGITAL HD, you will be informed about any available software updates.

To update the firmware, please proceed as follows:

1. Connect the visolux DIGITAL HD to a PC using the USB cable supplied. Ensure that the SD card is located in the card slot (18).
2. Switch the visolux DIGITAL HD on. The contents of the SD card will now be displayed on the PC as the “ESCHENBACH” drive.
3. Use the connected PC to open the web address which was provided in the email informing you about the firmware update.
4. Download the firmware update and save it directly to the drive, not in a drive subdirectory.
5. Disconnect the visolux DIGITAL HD from the PC using the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” function – you can find the symbol for this function in the operating system taskbar.
6. Open the settings menu, select the  symbol in the second menu level and then press the  button.
7. Use the two scroll buttons (1,8) to select the    symbol and then press the button. If you want to cancel the update and return to the previous page, select the symbol     and press the  button.
During the firmware update, the “During Fw update. . . ” message appears on the display.

If the update has been successful, the visolux DIGITAL HD switches off automatically. Never switch the device off and never remove the SD card from the device during a firmware update. Otherwise, the visolux DIGITAL HD could be irreparably damaged. This type of damage is not covered by the guarantee!

HDMI connection

You can use the HDMI cable supplied to connect the device from its HDMI output (7) to the HDMI input on another device, e.g. a television. This enables both the camera image and the image files to be displayed on the connected device.

USB connection

You can use the USB cable supplied to connect the device from its USB connection (4) to the USB connection on another device, e.g. a computer. The SD card inserted in the device will then be made available as the “ESCHENBACH” drive for data operations.

Reset

If the reader stops working as described in this manual, it may be due a fault that you can rectify yourself by resetting the reader. Insert a small, pointed object carefully into the housing opening (21) and press the switch contained inside it.

Care instructions

  • When cleaning the visolux DIGITAL HD, do not use any soap solutions
    that contain softening agents, any alcoholic or organic solvents or
    any abrasive detergents!

  • Do not clean the visolux DIGITAL HD in an ultrasonic bath or under
    flowing water!

  • Only use a soft, dry cloth to clean the visolux DIGITAL HD. For heavier
    soiling (e.g. fingerprints), moisten the cloth slightly.

Disposal

  • When the reader reaches the end of its useful life, do not dispose of it with the normal household waste. This product is subject to the European directive 2012/19/EU.

  • Dispose of the product or parts of the product via an approved disposal facility or your municipal disposal facility. Please comply with all applicable regulations. In case of doubt, contact your disposal facility. Dispose of all packaging materials in an environmentally responsible manner.

Warranty

Within the parameters of the applicable statutory provisions, we provide a warranty for the functioning of the product described in this manual with regard to faults arising in connection with manufacturing defects or material defects. No warranty claims can be accepted for damage that arises due to improper handling, including damage from falls or impacts. Warranty claims can only be accepted on presentation of the sale receipt!
