Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to Philips! To fully benefit from the support that Philips offers, register your product at www.philips.com/welcome. This new SENSEO® machine (HD6554, HD6555, HD6556) offers you more choice with Intensity Select. Next to the long, smooth SENSEO® coffee you can also brew a strong, smaller SENSEO® coffee by simply pressing the button twice.
Clean cold water
Use clean cold water every day. If you have not used the machine for 1 day,
you have to flush it with clean cold water before you use it again. To flush
the machine, fill the water reservoir with clean cold water, place a bowl or 2
cups under the spout and press the 2-cup button a few times to brew hot water
until the water reservoir is empty.
Fresh coffee pods
Use the SENSEO® coffee pods that have been specially developed for your
SENSEO® coffee machine for a full, round taste. SENSEO® coffee pods stay fresh
longer when you store them in a storage container.
A clean machine
Clean and descale the Philips SENSEO® coffee machine every 3 months. For more
information on why it is important to descale, how to descale or which
descaler to use, visit our website at www.philips.com/descale-
senseo.
Important safety information
Read this user manual carefully before you use the machine and save it for
future reference.
Danger – Never immerse the machine in water or any other liquid.
Warning
– Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom of the machine corresponds to
the local mains voltage before you connect the machine.
– Always put the plug in an earthed wall socket.
– Do not use the machine if the plug, the mains cord or the machine itself is
damaged.
– Always unplug the machine before you clean it.
– If the mains cord is damaged, you must have it replaced by Philips, a
service center authorized by Philips or similarly qualified persons in order
to avoid a hazard.
– This machine can be used by children aged from 8 years and above and by
persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of
experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction
concerning use of the machine in a safe way and if they understand the hazards
involved.
– Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children unless they are
older than 8 and supervised.
– Keep the machine, its accessories and its cord out of the reach of children
aged less than 8 years.
– Children shall not play with the machine.
Caution
– Always return the machine to a service center authorized by Philips for
examination or repair. Do not attempt to repair the machine yourself,
otherwise your warranty becomes invalid.
– After unpacking the machine, never put the machine on its side. Always keep
it in upright position, also during transport.
– Never put normal ground coffee or use torn pods in the pod holder, as this
causes it to become blocked.
– Do not use the machine in combination with a transformer, as this could
cause hazardous situations.
– Do not use the machine in combination with water softeners based on sodium
exchange.
– Always put the machine on a flat and stable surface.
– Do not place the machine on a hotplate or directly next to a hot oven,
heater or similar source of heat.

the machine may freeze and cause damage.
– Never flush the machine or let it brew coffee when the spout is not in
place.
– Never pour any other liquid than clean cold water into the water reservoir.
– Flush the machine with fresh water before you use it for the first time.
This causes the system to fill with water, which is essential for the machine
to work properly.
– Descale the machine at least every 3 months. If you do not descale the
machine regularly, it may stop working properly. In this case, repair is not
covered by your warranty.
– Never interrupt the descaling process.
– Never use a descaling agent based on mineral acids such as sulphuric acid,
hydrochloric acid, sulphamic acid and acetic acid (e.g. vinegar). These
descaling agents may damage your coffee machine.

Problem | Possible cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
My coffee cup overflows with cold coffee | You did not flush the machine before | |
first use. | Always flush the machine before first use. | |
The indicator light flashes slowly. | The machine is heating up. | If this takes |
longer than 2 minutes, contact the Philips Consumer Care Center in your
country
The indicator light flashes quickly.| There is not enough water in the water
reservoir| Fill the water reservoir and make sure you place the water
reservoir properly into the machine.
| The float in the water reservoir may be stuck.| Empty the water reservoir
and shake it a few times to release the float. Clean the water reservoir with
hot water and some washingup liquid or in the dishwasher.
The coffee is not hot enough.| You need to descale the machine.| Descale the
machine according to the instructions.
The coffee temperature in the cup decreases quickly.| Do not use cups that are
too large.| Use thin-walled cups. Thin-walled cups absorb less heat from the
coffee than thick-walled cups.
| | You can preheat the coffee machine and cup by brewing a cup of hot water
first without placing a coffee pod in the pod holder.
Intensity select: after pressing the coffee button twice, I do not get a
stronger coffee.| You have pressed the coffee button twice too fast or you
have waited longer than 3 seconds after pressing the button for the first
time.| Pressing the coffee button twice to get a stronger coffee is possible
within a time frame of 3 seconds. The LED light on the machine will shine less
bright if the programming was successful.
I cannot open the lid.| A temporary vacuum has developed under the lid.|
Switch off the coffee machine. Pull up the lever and wait 24 hours before you
open the lid. You may need to use some force. Always make sure the pod holders
are clean and the sieve is not clogged to prevent a vacuum.
The coffee machine produces less coffee than before.| Perhaps the sieve in the
center of the pod holder is clogged.| If the sieve is clogged, use a washing-
up brush to unclog the sieve. If you cannot unclog it properly with the
washing-up brush, put the pod holder in the machine and descale the machine
according to the instructions.
| Perhaps you have pressed the 1 or 2-cup button twice.| This machine has
Intensity Select. If you press the button twice, you get a smaller cup of
stronger coffee.
I cannot close the lid properly.| Perhaps a used coffee pod is sticking to the
water distribution disk.| If this is the case, remove the used pod.
The coffee is not strong enough.| You may not have used the right number of
pods or may have pressed the wrong button.| Use 1 pod in combination with the
1-cup pod holder and the 1-cup button. Use 2 pods in combination with the
2-cup pod holder and the 2-cup button.
| The pod(s) may not have been placed in the pod older properly.| Place the
coffee pod(s) properly in the center of the pod holder, to prevent water from
escaping along the edge of the pod(s). When you use two coffee pods on top of
each other, make sure that the convex sides of both pods point downwards and
press the pods lightly into the pod holder. Make sure that the coffee in the
pod is distributed evenly.
| You may have used the same pod twice.| Place a new pod in the pod holder to
brew a fresh cup of coffee.
| Perhaps you need a different flavor.| If you prefer a more robust flavor,
SENSEO® coffee pods with a stronger blend are available.
| HD6554, HD6555, HD6556: Use intensity select.| Press the button twice to
brew one or two small cups of stronger coffee.
The coffee is too strong.| Perhaps you need a different flavor.| If you prefer
a milder flavor, SENSEO® coffee pods with a milder blend are available.
| Perhaps you pressed the 1-cup or 2-cup button twice.| This machine has
Intensity Select. If you press the button twice, you get a smaller cup of
stronger coffee.
Water leaks from the coffee machine.| You have not closed the lid properly.|
Close the lid properly and lock the lever.
| You overfilled the water reservoir.| Do not fill the water reservoir beyond
the MAX level.
| The sieve in the center of the pod holder may be clogged.| Check the pod
holder. If the sieve is clogged, use a washing-up brush to unclog the sieve.
If you cannot clean it properly with the ashingup brush, put the pod holder
in the machine and descale the machine according to the instructions.
| The sealing ring may be stuck under the edge of the distribution disk.|
Check if the sealing ring is stuck under the edge of the distribution disk. If
it is, pull it out from under the distribution disk carefully.
| Water drops on the worktop may be the result of placing the water reservoir
or removing used coffee pods.| Check if the water drops on the worktop are not
the result of placing or removing the water reservoir or removing used coffee
pods. Make sure that you do not remove the water reservoir when the coffee
machine is heating up. This may cause water that normally ends up in the water
reservoir to leak out of the machine.
| | In all other cases, contact the Philips Consumer Care Center in your
country.
| The machine has been stored in a room that was not frost-free.| Contact the
Philips Consumer Care. Center in your country.

approx. 2 minutes), the machine is ready for brewing coffee.
Intensity Select (HD6556, HD6555, HD6554)
It is possible to brew even shorter stronger cups of coffee by double pressing
the 1-cup or 2-cup button.
Special coffees
To brew a special coffee, place a cappuccino pod, a hot chocolate pod or
another special coffee pod in the 2-cup pod holder and press the 1-cup button.
2x descaling, 2x rinsing
Descale the machine at least every 3 months. Use liquid SENSEO® descaler only.
The descaling procedure consists of two descaling cycles and two flushing
cycles. Each cycle lasts 5 minutes. Fill a jug with 1 liter of water, pour one
half of the bottle in the jug and then pour the descaling mixture in the water
reservoir. Press the 2-cup button several times until all descaling mixture is
used up. You have to use 1 jug of descaling mixture for each descaling cycle.
Use the 1-cup pod holder with a used pod or the thin descaling filter during
the first descaling cycle and use the 2-cup pod holder with a used pod or the
thick descaling filter during the second descaling cycle. Fill the water
reservoir with fresh water and press the 2-cup button several times until the
water reservoir is empty. Repeat this for the second flushing cycle. Do not
interrupt the descaling cycles and do not switch off the machine before you
have performed the two flushing cycles. Throw used pods or descaling filters
away after use. For more information on why it is important to descale, when
to descale and how to descale or which descaler to use, visit our website at
