ClassKit & Privacy

ClassKit is designed with student privacy in mind.

  • If your school uses ClassKit apps and Apple School Manager, your progress on activities assigned by your teacher will be shared with your school.
  • The progress data can include start and end times on assigned activities, points earned, quiz scores, and completion status.
  • To stop sharing your progress with your School or Institution, or to delete your progress data, contact your School or Institution.

When a school opts in to student progress recording with ClassKit via Apple School Manager, app developers can privately and securely share student progress with teachers on activities, like reading a chapter in a book, completing a set of math equations or taking a quiz, assigned in school- managed environments. This data allows your school and teachers as well as yourself to better understand your learning progress on assigned activities.

Student progress data is recorded only for activities your teacher explicitly assigns in ClassKit-enabled apps, and only when you are using your Managed Apple ID, assigned by the school, on your device.

Schools control whether or not to enable ClassKit progress recording and can choose to opt out students of collection if desired. When ClassKit progress recording is enabled in Apple School Manager by your School or Institution, data that ClassKit-enabled applications record about your progress is collected and sent to Apple for use by your School or Institution. Any data collected is the responsibility of the School or Institution under the terms of the Apple School Manager Agreement.

ClassKit requires the use of Managed Apple IDs owned by your School or Institution. Once student progress recording has been enabled by your School or Institution in Apple School Manager, you will receive an onscreen notification the first time you access a ClassKit-enabled app, while signed in to a Managed Apple ID, on an iPad, including a Shared iPad. You will receive an additional notification if you sign in to an iPad, such as one at home, with your Managed Apple ID.

The progress data sent to Apple, authorized by your School or Institution, is available to your school and can include your progress on an activity, points earned, quiz scores, and completion status, as well as start and end times on assigned activities. Activities assigned to you in ClassKit-enabled apps via an assignment will authorize an iOS app to share the progress data it has recorded about your completion of those activities.

Transparency and Control

You can see what data is sent to Apple by going to Settings > Class Progress. You can also see a complete view of all recorded data in Schoolwork, if it is installed on your device.

If you want to stop sharing your progress with your School or Institution, or to delete your progress data, contact your School or Institution, which has the ability to do so.

While your progress data is stored on Apple servers, it is encrypted at rest and while in transit between your device and Apple servers.

Retention

Apple retains any progress data authorized for collection by the instructions of your School or Institution. If you ask your School or Institution to delete your data or to delete your Managed Apple ID, Apple will delete the data on its servers within 30 days.

If your School or Institution removes you from a class in Apple School Manager, your student progress data authorized for that class will be deleted. Removal of a class in Apple School Manager by your School or Institution will also delete all associated data.

Developers

We have placed additional obligations on all developers adopting ClassKit. In addition to our normal requirements for placing an app on the App Store, we have required that developers do not adopt ClassKit unless their use of ClassKit is designed to provide educational services. They must also provide a suitable and comprehensive Privacy Policy of all of their data use.

Protecting the privacy and security of your information is a priority for everyone at Apple. We work hard to collect only the data we need to make your experience better, and when we do collect data we believe it’s important for you to know what we’re collecting and why we need it, so you can make informed choices. ClassKit, like every Apple product and service, is designed with these principles in mind.

At all times, information collected by Apple will be treated in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at www.apple.com/privacy.
