Pre-Installation Checklist

Allow sufficient clearance between the Kimchi Refrigerator and nearby walls or furniture, and set up the Kimchi Refrigerator on a solid, even surface. You must locate and install this Kimchi Refrigerator in accordance with the directions in this manual before using it.checklist 1

  • Leave at least a 10cm clearance behind the Kimchi Refrigerator. Failing to do so may result in the doors bumping into the wall or any furniture located behind the Kimchi Refrigerator when you open it, damaging them.
  • The floor must be solid enough to sustain the Kimchi Refrigerator’s weight after it is completely filled with kimchi.
  • Installing the Kimchi Refrigerator on an inclined surface or on a step can cause it to tip over and result in injury. Set up the Kimchi Refrigerator in a location where the ambient temperature remains constant.
  • Items inside the Kimchi Refrigerator may freeze and become soft if the ambient temperature is too low. The ambient temperature should be between 5ºC and 43ºC.
  • Do not set up the Kimchi Refrigerator in an area with direct sunlight, near heating appliances, or where the ambient temperature is extremely low. Do not place the Kimchi Refrigerator on a carpet or rug.
  • This will obstruct ventilation and cause the mechanical compartment to overheat, resulting in a fire hazard and decreasing the performance of the Kimchi Refrigerator.
  • Keep ventilation openings in the appliance enclosure or mounting structure clear of obstructions.

Before Use

When storing Kimchi

  • Please store Kimchi in sealed Containers. if kimchi is stored in plastic bags or other Containers, it can be frozen or it can spoil.
  • When filling Containers with Kimchi, fill the Containers up to the limit line inside of the Containers. If the Containers are too full, Kimchi liquid may leak out and the Kimchi’s taste may be spoiled by the gas produced by the process of Kimchi ripening.
  • You must cover Kimchi with its liquid and seal the Containers properly. If the Containers are not sealed properly, air can enter the Containers and cause the Kimchi to get moldy and turn white.
  • Check if Kimchi liquid is leaking out of the Containers by taking the Containers out of the refrigerator 2~3 days after you first store them. You should be able to store Kimchi long term without Kimchi liquid leaking from the Containers.

Power Outage

  • If possible, do not open the Kimchi Refrigerator doors during a power outage. Outages lasting two to three hours will not affect the kimchi significantly.
  • Once the power is restored, the Kimchi Refrigerator resumes operating using the same settings as before the power outage.
Using Kimchi Containers

[Benefits of Using Kimchi Containers]
• The Kimchi Containers have lids so that you can take out kimchi without having to take the heavy Kimchi Containers out of the Kimchi Refrigerator.

[Causes of Kimchi Container Deformation]
• Placing the Kimchi Container or its lid in boiling water or drying them in direct sunlight will cause them to deform. (Once deformed, the lid will no longer keep air out of the Kimchi Container or keep your kimchi fresh.)

[Using the Kimchi Containers]using 1 Opening the Kimchi Container from Inside the Kimchi Refrigerator
• Hook your thumb and fingers into the lockdown flap and push in the direction of the arrow as if rotating the flap.

Opening the Kimchi Container from Outside the Kimchi Refrigerator
• Grab the flaps as shown in the diagram and pull them apart using your thumbs.

Closing the Kimchi Container lid.
• Align the lid with the Kimchi Container and then snap all four flaps into place.

CAUTION

• Make sure that all Kimchi Container flaps are locked before transporting the Kimchi Container. The lid may come loose if all of the flaps have been not locked securely. If the lid does come off, the Kimchi Container will drop and possibly result in injury. Always hold the Kimchi Container with two hands when transporting it.
• Do not submerge the Kimchi Container or lid in boiling water or dry them under direct sunlight.

NOTE

• The lid of a Kimchi Container that has been stored in a regular or Kimchi refrigerator may be difficult to open due to a temporary vacuum pressure buildup inside the Kimchi Container. To remedy this, leave the Kimchi Container at room temperature for a while.
• Kimchi liquid might leak or the taste might be spoiled if a container is placed on its side or upside down.
• Fold the handles and attach them to the cover after putting the container into the Kimchi refrigerator. If you leave the handles up and this prevents the door of the Kimchi refrigerator from closing properly, it may affect the taste of Kimchi.

Fermenting kimchi deliciously

Fermenting kimchi inside a Kimchi Refrigerator

  • Use the “Ferment function”. Once fermentation is complete, it automatically changes to “Preserve – Cold” for storage.
  • The period for fermentation to finish is uniform regardless of the volume of the contents.
  • The number shown on the fermentation progress indicator refers to the time remaining until fermentation is complete. If the remaining time is 24 hours or less, it is indicated in hourly intervals.

Fermenting kimchi outdoors

  • Once the kimchi juice level rises and the juice starts to bubble, store the kimchi inside the Kimchi Refrigerator.
  • Allowing the kimchi to ferment a little and then storing it at a low temperature will give you tasty kimchi that is rich in probiotics.
  • The time when outdoor fermentation of kimchi is complete during a kimchi-making season is
    • when the kimchi juice level rises and the juice begins to bubble,
    • when the kimchi loses its raw vegetable scent and develops a sour taste, and
    • when the juice tastes ripe but the cabbage does not taste fully ripe. Once you start seeing these signs, store the kimchi inside the Kimchi Refrigerator.

NOTE

  • Please be mindful that the fermentation time when fermenting kimchi outdoors varies depending on the type of kimchi, salinity (amount of salt), and season (fermentation temperature).
  • You will be able to eat the fermented kimchi for a longer period if you store it in the “Preserve – Cold+” mode (however, if thin ice is seen during storage, store it in the “Preserve – Cold” mode).

About fermenting speed

  • The fermenting speed of kimchi varies depending on the amount of salt and the types and amounts of ingredients (seasoning).
  • The salt concentration is the most important factor in fermenting kimchi. It takes a shorter time to ripen kimchi if the salt concentration level is low but the ripening speed slows down if the salt concentration level is high.
  • The fermenting speed is affected by the types and amounts of seasonings used to add flavor to the kimchi, and varies significantly depending on your locale and dietary pattern. Using large amounts of ingredients such as garlic, seafood (oysters, raw shrimp, croaker, hairtail, etc.), onions, dried red pepper powder, cucumbers, and green onions speeds up the fermenting process. On the other hand, adding ingredients such as chives, mustard leaves, and ginseng slows the fermenting process.

NOTE

  • Once the Ferment function is set, the fermenting process is initiated in the entire Kimchi Refrigerator so store only the amount to be ripened.
  • The degree of fermentation may vary depending on the type of kimchi, salinity (amount of salt), and season so taste your kimchi periodically during the fermenting process to check if the kimchi is ripe, and switch to the Preserve mode for use.
  • Kimchi may not feel cold during the fermenting process. Once fermentation is complete, it switches to “Preserve – Cold” and, after this point, you may enjoy cold kimchi.
  • If you prefer raw kimchi, skip the fermenting process and use the Preserve function right away.

Storing kimchi long-termcontrols 2

  • Do not put kimchi above the maximum line (A) inside the container (or the handle type locking tabs (B) for the metallic Containers). Overfilling the kimchi container will result in gas filling the container and causing the juices to spill over. If kimchi juices spill over, outside air can enter the container and spoil the kimchi.
  • Push down on the kimchi to ensure that no air is trapped inside, and the kimchi is completely submerged in the kimchi juice. Exposing the kimchi to air can cause yeast to form and an unpleasant odor to develop. It is also advisable to cover the kimchi using outer cabbage leaves or plastic sheets to protect it from air exposure.

FAQs regarding Kimchi

Symptom Solution
Kimchi is frozen! – As the appropriate storage temperature differs by

the kinds of Kimchi and salinity, please check the kind of Kimchi. Low salinity Kimchi or watery Kimchi is likely to be frozen. Keep it under Kimchi (Weak).
Kimchi gets sour

quickly.

| –    Check whether the storage temperature is too high. Low salinity Kimchi might get frozen at low temperature so keep it under Kimchi (Weak) even though it gets sour quickly.

–    If Kimchi is overseasoned, it might get sour quickly.

The color of Kimchi has changed.| –    It is because the Kimchi had lots of water when it was made or the seasoning is not properly applied.

–    Decolorized Kimchi is caused by yeast. Remove the decolorized portion and store the Kimchi with enough liquid.

Some white strands (white yeast) appear on the Kimchi.

| –    It can be formed when the surface of Kimchi is in contact with the air, so cover the Kimchi with outer leaves, sanitary bags or add more salt to prevent the air from coming into contact.

–    Don’t take the Kimchi out with wet hands. The moisture from outside can cause the formation of yeast. Take the Kimchi out with dry hands or sanitary gloves. Also, fill the remaining Kimchi with Kimchi liquid by pressing it forcefully.

–    If you leave the Kimchi as it is, the yeast might increase and make the Kimchi runny. Therefore, remove the yeast right away.

–    Yeast can appear as time goes by even in the Kimchi refrigerator.

Kimchi gets runny!

| –    If you used the cabbage which had lots of water or was not salted properly and got exposure to the air, or was salted too much, then the Kimchi might get runny. This phenomenon happens frequently for low salinity Kimchi, so remember to make properly seasoned Kimchi. Also, adding too much sugar can cause runny Kimchi.

–    For Radish Kimchi, a lot of moisture from the radishes might come out when it is salted for too long. This causes runny Radish Kimchi. Make sure that salting does not last more than 1 hour.

–    It is important that Kimchi has enough liquid. Be especially careful with low salinity Kimchi.

A strange odor comes out of the Kimchi.

| –    The odor might come from the seasoning like garlic, salted fi sh, etc. at first, but it would disappear durng fermentation. Putting lots of garlic, onions, or spring onions into Kimchi might cause an unpleasant odor, so add them properly.

–    When you store Kimchi in the refrigerator without a little bit of fermenting, it might cause a strange odor.

–    An odor can occur If the Kimchi is in contact with the air or yeast has appeared in the Kimchi making it sour.

–    Odors can be prevented by blocking outside air after making Kimchi, and by leaving the Kimchi at room temperature for a certain period of time before putting it in the Kimchi refrigerator.

Always disconnect the power plug before cleaning the Kimchi Refrigerator. Failing to do so may result in electric shock. Make sure the detachable parts are clean and dry before reassembling them.

  • Clean with a dish towel that has been soaked with a neutral detergent. Clean the grooves using a cotton swab.
  • Clean the controls and display using a dry dish towel. Do not use water or detergent.
  • Oils and insecticides can react with the Kimchi Refrigerator surface. Over time, this reaction will cause the surface to discolor or even crack. Make sure to keep the Kimchi Refrigerator surface clean of oils and insecticides.
  • Wipe off excess moisture using a dry dish towel.

Removing Frost and Condensation

  • Using sharp objects or excessive force when removing frost will damage the inner walls of the Kimchi Refrigerator.
  • If too much frost has formed inside the Kimchi Refrigerator and it’s difficult to take out the Kimchi Containers, empty the Kimchi Containers and power off the chamber. Wait 30 minutes and remove the frost. Make sure to store the items inside the Kimchi Containers in the other chamber or your refrigerator.
  • Frost will turn into ice over time. This will decrease your Kimchi Refrigerator’s performance. Make sure to remove any frost inside the Kimchi Refrigerator before it turns into ice. Failing to do so may result in the items stored inside your Kimchi Refrigerator going bad.

Cleaning the Deodorizers

  • Deodorizers are semi-permanent units that do not need to be replaced.
  • Remove the deodorizer by opening the door, flipping the hook located at the center of the deodorizer up, and then pulling the deodorizer cover down. Clean the deodorizer when necessary and reassemble it in the reverse order.
  • Dry the deodorizer under the sun for about a day to reactivate its deodorization agents.

Cleaning the Kimchi Containers

  • New Kimchi Containers can smell of plastic. Wash them thoroughly using a neutral detergent and a sponge before use.
  • If your Kimchi Container has taken on a smell from normal use, add small bits of green vegetables and set it aside with the lid on for a day or so, or fill it with water left over from washing rice and scrub the inside of the Kimchi Container with a sponge to remove the smell.
  • Long-term use can cause the Kimchi Containers to take on the color and smell of the kimchi stored in them.

NOTE: If you intend to not use the Kimchi Refrigerator for an extended duration of time or when cleaning the Kimchi Refrigerator, disconnect the power plug, open the doors to allow the interior to dry, and clean the interior using a dry piece of cloth or dish towel.

WARNING

• Do not spray water directly onto the Kimchi Refrigerator.
• Do not use benzene, paint thinner, bleach, alcohol or acetone to clean it.
• Do not clean the display using a wet dish towel.
• Do not place or boil a kimchi container or its lid in water that has a temperature of 50 ℃ or higher.
• Do not place or use a kimchi container or its lid in a dishwasher or a microwave.

CAUTION

• Do not use a brush, scrub, rough piece of cloth or any abrasive tool to clean the interior or exterior of the Kimchi Refrigerator.
• Once you’ve finished cleaning, make sure that the power cord is undamaged and the power plug is cool and securely inserted into the electrical outlet.
• Do not slide your hands underneath the Kimchi Refrigerator. There are sharp parts that could cause injury.
• Do not place the Kimchi Container or lid in hot (50ºC) or boiling water.

Troubleshooting

Problem Solution

The Kimchi Refrigerator is not working.

| –    Check the power plug connection.

–    Check if the chamber you want to use has been turned on.

–    The compressor unit will turn on and off repeatedly to maintain the temperature levels inside the Kimchi Refrigerator. This is a normal operation.

The temperature inside the Kimchi Refrigerator is too high.

| –    Check the power plug connection.

–    Direct sunlight and heating appliances can decrease the Kimchi Refrigerator’s performance. Make sure to install the Kimchi Refrigerator away from direct sunlight and heating appliances.

–    Secure at least 10cm of clearance between the Kimchi Refrigerator and the walls to the rear and sides.

–    If Kimchi (weak) storage function is selected, adjust it to Kimchi (mid) or (strong). Use caution. The stored food might get frozen.

Frost/condensation has formed on the inner walls.

| –    Your Kimchi Refrigerator employs a direct cooling mechanism to ensure the most optimal kimchi storage conditions. Frost formation and condensation inside the chambers are natural phenomenon of this cooling mechanism. (Caused by the convection current.)

–    Frost or condensation can form if the ambient temperature or humidity level is high, the Kimchi Refrigerator doors are left open for a long time, or the Kimchi Refrigerator doors are opened and closed too frequently.

–    Some frost may form inside the product as a result of the moisture level regulation used to keep kimchi fresh. This is not a malfunction.

The front/back

of the Kimchi Refrigerator is hot.

| ****

– Your Kimchi Refrigerator uses heating pipes that prevent condensation. Also, the Kimchi Refrigerator may feel hot when started up for the first time or during summer. This is not a malfunction.

Kimchi stored in the Kimchi Refrigerator is becoming frozen.

| –    Items stored inside the Kimchi Refrigerator can freeze if the ambient temperature around the Kimchi Refrigerator is too low.

–    Your Kimchi Refrigerator employs a direct cooling mechanism, which will cause fruit and vegetables to freeze if they come into direct contact with the walls inside the chambers. Store fruit and vegetables using the Kimchi Containers with the lids on and store items that can freeze easily away from the inner walls.

–    Wrapping items in paper towels will prevent them from softening and make it possible to store them for a long time.

I can hear the sound

of water flowing.

| ****

– This could be the sound of the refrigerant or the sound of frost inside the product melting. This is not a malfunction.

The Kimchi Refrigerator is making a clanking/ whirring sound.| ****

– Your Kimchi Refrigerator will make noise as its internal temperature drops or rises, its components are activated and deactivated, and when the power is cut off or restored. This is not a malfunction.

---|---
I just bought

the Kimchi Refrigerator, but it is wet inside.

| ****

– The moisture is the result of performance testing at the factory.

This is not a malfunction and does not mean the product is a second hand product.

The Kimchi Refrigerator smells funny.

| –    Items that have been stored in the Kimchi Refrigerator for an extended period of time can also be the cause of the odor.

–    The deodorizers may be dirty and no longer capable of removing odors effectively. Try cleaning them.

–    Check if Kimchi liquid has leaked from the Containers.

The Kimchi Refrigerator controls are unresponsive.| ****

–    Unlock the controls by pressing the Lock/Unlock button.

–    Check if the chamber you want to use has been turned on.

There are letters shown on the display.| ****

– This occurs if there is a problem with the product’s temperature

sensor. Contact the service center.
