pH Meter Instructions
INTRODUCTION
This meter provides an accurate reading, allowing you to adjust the pH level
of the soil to best suit the plants you wish to grow.
HOW TO USE
Ensure the probe is rubbed down with very fine sandpaper prior to use, this
will remove any residue and provide a more accurate and reliable reading.
Taking a pH reading:
- Remove any stones or other solid waste
- Ensure the soil is wet before inserting the probe
- Wipe the end of the probe with a dry cloth
- Push the probe into the soil and read the pH degree after 60 seconds.
- Once a reading has been taken, clean the probe to remove any soil residue before storing or taking another reading.
CHANGING THE PH VALUE
Increasing the pH value:
To increase the pH value in your soil, lime should be added. Lime is a
compound of calcium or calcium and magnesium. Apply in the form of ground
agricultural limestone, burnt lime or hydrated lime for the quickest result.
Decreasing the pH value:
To decrease the pH value in your soil, use either aluminium sulphate or
sulphur. Aluminium sulphate is the quickest acting as it will increase the
acidity as soon as it dissolves into the soil.
Note:
Quantities of additives will vary depending on the type of soil. Consult a
gardening book or professional gardener if further advice is needed.
