(plastic bags and cardboard) out of reach of children. After unpacking the appliance, carefully check it for external damage that may have occurred during transport. Place the coffee machine on a flat, stable and heat- resistant surface. It is best to clean the interior of the new coffee machine prior to using it for the first time. This is done as follows:

  • * Take the removable water reservoir from the appliance, slide the cover upwards and fold it over. Fill the water reservoir with cold drinking water. Do not fill it above the MAX mark. Place the cover back on the reservoir and slide the reservoir back into the appliance.
    • Place the one- or two-cup filter without coffee in the filter holder, making sure that the ball at the side of the filter falls precisely into the indentation in the holder. Then place the holder in the appliance from the INSERT position and firmly turn the handle counter-clockwise to the LOCK position.
    • Place a cup in the centre of the cup grille and make sure the steam controller is switched off (turned upwards).
    • Insert the plug in the socket and press the on/off button ( ) once. The indicator lights on the operating panel start to flash to indicate that the appliance is being pre-heated. When the lights remain on, the pre-heating process has been completed. Attention: During pre-heating, the appliance does not work when pressing the flashing buttons.
    • Press the manually adjustable coffee button ( ) and allow the appliance to pump water for approx. 30 seconds. Press the button once more to stop the water flow. Then switch off the appliance, remove the plug from the socket and remove the remaining water from the water reservoir and the cup.
    • Allow the appliance to cool down and clean all separate parts as indicated in section CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE.
      Attention:
The appliance can make more noise when pumping water for the first time, this is normal, as the air in the appliance is released. After approximately 20 minutes the noise will decrease.
      Important:
Only fill the appliance with cold water. Hot water has a negative effect on the coffee machine’s life span.

If you do not switch off the appliance yourself, it will switch off automatically after approx. 25 minutes to save energy. After switching off, remove the plug from the socket.

After making coffee, do not forget to screw the filter holder out of the appliance and remove the coffee residue. For this, push the flap on the handle of the holder upwards with your thumb, this makes sure that the filter does not fall out of the holder. Then remove the filter from the holder and rinse it under flowing water. Empty the water reservoir to prevent scaling. Also empty the removable leak tray regularly, the floater in the leak tray becomes visible above the cup grille when the leak tray is full. Allow all parts to cool down before you clean them.

cleaning and maintenance
Regularly clean the coffee machine. This is not only beneficial for the life span of the appliance, it also ensures optimum use of the appliance and, of course, good tasting coffee.
Cleaning should involve the following:

  • * Prior to cleaning, always check that the coffee machine is switched off, cooled down and that the plug has been removed from the socket.
    • Regularly clean the outside of the appliance with a slightly damp cloth and then wipe it dry with a dry cloth.
    • Regularly clean the water reservoir, leak tray and cup grille of the appliance with hot water and a mild washing-up liquid. Then rinse thoroughly with hot water and wipe dry.
    • Take the filter holder away from the appliance by turning it clockwise. Remove coffee residues and clean the filter holder, filters and measuring spoon/tamper with water and a mild washing-up liquid. Then rinse thoroughly with hot water and wipe dry. Attention! Avoid making contact with the blades in the filter for coffee capsules, these are very sharp.
    •  Remove the attachment from the steam pipe and clean it with hot water and a mild washing-up liquid. Then rinse thoroughly with hot water and wipe dry. Wipe the end of the steam pipe clean with a slightly damp cloth and then wipe it dry with a dry cloth.
    •  Place back all components correctly in the appliance.
      Attention:
Never use abrasives, alcohol or solvents when cleaning. Never rinse the appliance under the tap or submerge it in water.

storage
When the coffee machine is not being used for a longer period of time, you must first release the steam in the appliance. This is done as follows:

  • * Check that the steam controller is switched off (turned upwards). Switch on the appliance and wait until the indicator lights remain on. Press the steam button ( ) and wait until the indicator light remains on.
    • Turn the steam pipe away from the appliance, use the provided handle for this. Hold a cup under the steam pipe to collect any water that is released.
      Warning:
The steam pipe becomes hot, only grab it by means of the supplied handle.

    • Then slowly turn the steam controller, after which the steam sprays out of the steam pipe. Allow the steam to be released for 3 minutes.
      Warning:
Never turn the steam controller too quickly, too much steam could be created too quickly otherwise, which in rare cases could lead to an explosion.

    • Then turn the steam controller closed again (turned upwards) and press the steam button ( ) to turn it off. Allow the appliance to cool down and remove the plug from the socket.
      Attention!
Avoid contact with steam, this could result in personal injury!Store the appliance on a dry location at a temperature that is higher than 0 °C.

de-scaling
Regularly de-scale your coffee machine. The de-scaling intervals depend on the hardness of the mains water and the frequency at which the coffee machine is being used. We recommend de-scaling the coffee machine every 2-3 months. Due to scaling, the heating element can become obstructed. This causes overheating, as a result of which the coffee machine is switched off automatically as a safety precaution and will no longer function. The coffee machine will have to be repaired. You can de-scale the coffee machine with a special de-scaling agent for coffee machines or with kitchen grade vinegar.
If you use a special de-scaling agent for coffee machines, you must observe the instructions on the packaging of this agent.
When using kitchen grade vinegar, proceed as follows:

  • * Switch off the appliance by pressing the on/off button and remove any remaining water from the water reservoir.
    •  Fill the water reservoir with clean, cold water and cold kitchen grade vinegar up to the MAX mark. The water and kitchen grade vinegar ratio should be 4:1. Place the filter holder with filter (without coffee) back in the appliance and place a cup on the cup grille.
    • Check that the steam controller is switched off (turned upwards) and switch on the appliance.
    •  Press the manually adjustable coffee button when the indicator light next to the button remains on. Allow the water to flow until your cup is full. Press the button once more to stop the coffee making process and remove the water from the cup.
    • Repeat step 5 once and then wait 5 seconds.
    • Press the steam button ( ) and wait until the indicator light remains on. Make steam for 2 minutes by slowly turning the steam controller. Hold a cup under the steam pipe to collect any water that is released. Turn the steam controller upwards again and press the steam button once more to switch it off.
    • Switch off the appliance. Wait for at least 15 minutes, as a result the scale will be softened and removed.
    • Switch on the appliance again, wait until the indicator lights remain on and allow the appliance to run until the water reservoir is empty. The de-scaling process has been completed. Empty the cup and the removable leak tray to remove any water.
    •  After de-scaling, allow a full reservoir of cold water to flow through the appliance at least 3 times, to remove all de-scaling liquid and vinegar residues and thus prevent a sour taste in the coffee. Repeat all above-mentioned steps, only now do not add kitchen grade vinegar to the water. It is not necessary to wait 15 minutes at point 8.When the appliance has been used 500 times, the indicator lights will flash quickly for 5 times to indicate that the appliance should be de-scaled. When the appliance is not de-scaled, this will continue to happen. When the appliance is switched on and all indicator lights are lighting up, hold down buttons and for 3 seconds. The indicator lights at these buttons flash quickly for 3 times and the appliance starts to count from 0 again.
      Attention!
If the coffee machine has not been used for some time, e.g. due to vacation, it is recommended to remove and clean all separate components. Then place the cleaned separate components back on their place and allow the coffee machine to make one run with clean water. In this way you will prevent a possible foreign taste.
