PRODUCT OVERVIEW
SSW-8 (33829)
- POWER MODE: Controls the power status of the subwoofer. The unit is powered OFF when the switch is in the Off position. The unit is powered ON, regardless of the presence of an audio signal or not, when the switch is in the On position. When placed in the Auto position, the unit automatically powers ON when an audio signal is detected and will automatically power OFF after several minutes of no audio signal.
- LINE IN/SUB IN: The two RCA jacks accept a line level signal from the preamplifier output of a receiver or preamplifier. Use both jacks when connecting a stereo preamplifier output. Use the L channel input when connecting to a mono LFE subwoofer output.
- PHASE: Depending on the location of the subwoofer, the sound that reaches your listening position may be out of phase with the sound from the rest of the system. If the bass sounds out of timing, muddy, or attenuated, try flipping the phase switch to the other position. The default, which will provide the best bass sound most of the time, is with the phase switch set to 0°.
- LOW-PASS FILTER: The rotary control sets the upper frequency for the subwoofer to handle, from 40-150 Hz. Initially, you should set the LOW-PASS FILTER to the lower frequency for the main speakers, then adjust it until the sound from the subwoofer blends in with the sound from the rest of the system.
- VOLUME LEVEL: The rotary control adjusts the overall volume level of the subwoofer. For best results, the subwoofer volume should be set to where it seamlessly blends in with the sound from the other speakers.
- SPEAKER LEVEL IN: If your amplifier or receiver does not have a stereo preamplifier or mono LFE output, you can connect to its speaker output. This is the least favored method of connecting the subwoofer.
- 120V – 60Hz 1.0A: Plug the AC power cord into a nearby AC power outlet. The subwoofer accepts a nominal 120 VAC, 60Hz power source.
SSW-10 (33830) and SSW-12 (35847)
- OFF/ON: The power switch turns the subwoofer ON or OFF.
- CROSSOVER: The rotary control sets the upper frequency for the subwoofer to handle, from 50-150 Hz. Initially, you should set the CROSSOVER to the lower frequency for the main speakers, then adjust it until the sound from the subwoofer blends in with the sound from the rest of the system.
- LINE IN/LINE OUT: The LINE IN RCA jacks accept a line level signal from the preamplifier output of a receiver or preamplifier. Use both jacks when connecting a stereo preamplifier output. Use the L channel input when connecting to a mono LFE subwoofer output. The LINE OUT jacks pass-through the original LINE IN signal without modification for connecting to another powered subwoofer or amplifier.
- HI LEVEL IN/HI LEVEL OUT: If your amplifier or receiver does not have a stereo preamplifier or mono LFE output, you can connect its speaker output to the HI LEVEL IN connectors. This is the least favored method of connecting the subwoofer. The HI LEVEL OUT connectors pass-through the original amplified signal for connecting the main speakers.
- AC 120V/60Hz: Plug the AC power cord into a nearby AC power outlet. The subwoofer accepts a nominal 120 VAC, 60Hz power source.
- LEVEL: The rotary control adjusts the overall volume level of the subwoofer. For best results, the subwoofer volume should be set to where it seamlessly blends in with the sound from the other speakers.
- POWER: The LED illuminates red when the subwoofer is plugged in and powered on.
- AUTO ON/ON: When set to the AUTO ON position, the subwoofer will automatically power on when an audio signal is detected and will automatically power off after several minutes of no audio signal. When set to the ON position, the subwoofer powers on an off normally using the ON/OFF power switch. Note that for the AUTO ON function to operate, the ON/OFF power switch must be set to the ON position.
SUBWOOFER PLACEMENT
In most rooms, the optimum location for your subwoofer is the closest solid front corner or somewhere along the front wall in line with your front speakers. This location typically offers optimal energy coupling with the room, front speakers, and the deepest low frequency extension, with the best high impact bass. Try to avoid a location that is far away from walls or near the center of the room. Bass output is maximized when the subwoofer is tucked into a corner. An ideal corner is far from wall divisions and has at least 6 feet or more of wall to either side. Try to keep the subwoofer placement away from any large openings into other rooms. When corner loading a subwoofer, you might want to experiment with how close the subwoofer sits to the closest wall, with a general rule of thumb that it should be within about 1 foot.
Placing the subwoofer in close proximity to the seating position, such as next to or behind the sofa, maximizes the output and can reduce room effects. A great technique for determining the best placement for your subwoofer is known as the Subwoofer Crawl. The first step is to place the subwoofer at your listening position. Ensure that audio with constant bass content or a test tone is playing. Next, crawl around the room (after all, the subwoofer will not be 5 or 6 feet in the air) and listen for where the bass sounds most full, with definition, punch, and depth. This will generally be the best location for your room and listening position. Finally, place the subwoofer in that location and complete the reset of your setup and configuration.
