Product Information

The Ultra Muzzle is a basket-style dog muzzle designed to provide comfort and safety for both the dog and the owner. It allows the dog to pant, drink, and breathe freely while still restricting biting and aggression. The muzzle is available in different sizes to ensure a proper fit for various dog breeds.

Choosing the Right Size

To determine the correct muzzle size for your dog, please follow these steps:

  1. Refer to the sizing guide in the Image Gallery on this page.
  2. Measure your dog’s nose length and circumference.
  3. Compare the measurements with the sizing categories in the guide.
  4. If the nose length and circumference fall into different categories, use the nose length measurement to determine the best size.

If you are unsure about the size after purchasing the muzzle, you can refer to the information section on this page. It provides examples of correct and incorrect fit for typical dog breeds. If you still have doubts, you can email us at office@wearecoa.com andinclude a picture of your dog wearing the muzzle. Our team will provide tailored sizing advice.

Custom Shaping the Ultra Muzzle

To custom shape the Ultra Muzzle for your dog, please follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that the muzzle is properly sized for your dog.
  2. Submerge the muzzle in hot water for a few minutes to soften the material.
  3. Remove the muzzle from the water and carefully shape it to fit your dog’s snout.
  4. Hold the muzzle in place until it cools down and retains its shape.

Acclimatizing Your Dog to Wear a Muzzle

Introducing a muzzle to your dog requires a gradual acclimatization process. Here are some steps to follow:

  1. Start by introducing the muzzle to your dog in a positive and calm environment.
  2. Allow your dog to sniff and investigate the muzzle without wearing it.
  3. Reward your dog with treats and praise when they show interest in the muzzle.
  4. Gradually progress to having your dog wear the muzzle for short periods of time, increasing the duration gradually.
  5. Continue to reward your dog with treats and praise during the training process.

Duration of Muzzle Wear

The Baskerville Ultra Muzzle is designed for longer periods of wear, allowing dogs to pant and drink freely. However, it is still recommended to supervise your dog while wearing the muzzle from both a safety and welfare perspective. Avoid leaving the muzzle on for extended periods unless necessary, such as in cases of aggressive behavior. This will also prevent your dog from removing the muzzle and potentially damaging it.

FAQs

  • What is the right muzzle size for my dog?
    • Please use the sizing guide on this page in the Image Gallery to determine which sizing category your dog falls into. If your dog’s nose length and circumference fall into different sizing categories, please use the nose length measurement to determine the best size.
    • I bought the muzzle but I’m unsure if this is the right size
    • Please refer to the information section on this page showing examples of correct and incorrect fit for the Ultra Muzzle on some typical dog breeds. If you are still unsure, please email us with a picture of your dog in their muzzle at office@wearecoa.com and one of our fur-tastic team will be able to offer more tailored sizing advice.
  • How do I custom shape the ultra muzzle for my dog?
    • Please see the guidance chart and how to video on this page for more information on how to re-shape your Ultra Muzzle to custom fit your dog. As an initial overview; firstly, place the muzzle in hot tap water for 2 minutes. Take the muzzle out of the water and when it is safe to touch, use your hands to shape the muzzle basket to suit your dog. Cool in cold water to lock in the shape. and then try the muzzle on your dog to check if it is the right fit. If necessary remould the muzzle again until it is right.
    • Please note you may need to reshape the muzzle every so often as the material will return to its original shape over time.
  • How do I acclimatise my dog to wear a muzzle?
    • It’s important to remember that for your dog having a new training aid on their head / face will feel unusual for your dog and it is perfectly normal reaction for them to try and remove it. We encourage you to help your dog acclimatise to the muzzle by using positive associations methods. This can be through using treats to encourage your dog to place their nose into the muzzle and placing the muzzle on the dog for a few seconds, then taking the muzzle off and rewarding immediately. Build up the length of time the muzzle is on slowly, so your dog has time to adjust. You can find more information on how to do this with the ‘how-to’ video on this page. If your dog is trying to take the muzzle off, try to distract them with a treat or their favourite toy to stop this behaviour. In the early days of acclimatising your dog we strongly recommend you use the collar loop and the headstrap for increased security and stability and minimise muzzle movement if your dog tries to remove it.
  • How long can a Bakersville muzzle be worn?
    • Due to the Baskerville basket style design, our muzzles can be worn for longer periods e.g. for daily dog walks, as the dog can pant and drink at all times with the muzzle on. However, even with Baskerville muzzles we do not recommend leaving these on your dog for extended periods of time unless absolutely necessary e.g. your dog is aggressive even at home. We recommend, as with all our products, to fully supervise your dog while they are wearing the muzzle from both a safety and welfare perspective. In the early days of muzzle training this will also ensure your dog does not remove the muzzle and potentially chew the product.
