The cloud microphones use phantom power to give up to 25dB + to the passive mics. It is mainly used for dynamic and ribbon mics. It is an easy-to-use design that uses phantom power to operate but doesn’t use phantom power to power the mics. It is a mic activator that can allow your basic mic to shine like never before. It is compatible with battery, tube or power supply-driven microphones.

The Cloudlifter is equipped with a phantom-powered JFET circuitry that provides 20-25db of clean, quiet, extra gain for any passive microphone. It is extremely useful for cutting down the noise in situations where your microphone has a low output, your preamp is noisy, or there has been extra noise introduced into the signal path through long cables.

Instructions

1. Connect the output of Cloudlifter (the Male XLR jack to the right of the Cloudlifter logo) to a preamplifier, mixing console or any other source that is capable of supplying phantom power. If you are using very long or multiple cables connected to one another, they should be on this (the output) side of the Cloudlifter.
2. Connect the accompanying input (the female XLR jack to the left of the Cloud logo. to any PASSIVE microphone (ribbon, dynamic, crystal or otherwise). The phantom power will not pass through the Cloudlifter to the microphone. Conversely, it cannot be used with phantom-powered microphones.
3. Turn phantom power on.
4. The Cloudlifter comes with a strap for firmly mounting on a stand and additionally has fee for tabletop and stage use.

Precautions

1. Always use quality cables in good repair to avoid ground hums or shorts. If you are experiencing hum or radio interference, try another cable.
2. Keep the Cloudlifter in a dust-free area when not in use.
3. Do not disassemble the Cloudlifter, as there are no user-serviceable parts inside, and doing so will void the warranty.

• Do I need 2 XLR cables for this to work? or will just one cable do?
  Yes, you will require 2 XLR cables. The CloudLifter CL-1 is designed to work with a microphone and a mixer, as well as an XLR/USB interface. The CL-1 converts 48v phantom power from a mixer or interface to roughly 25dB of extremely clean boost. It’s designed to operate with ribbon microphones like the Fathead or dynamics microphones like the SM58; if you’re using a condenser microphone like the NT1-A, the CL-1 won’t function since it doesn’t provide 48v phantom power.

• Is this better used for condenser or dynamic microphones?
  It is better used for dynamic microphones; however, some users have suggested that it also works for some of the condenser mics.

• Has anyone used this with a Heil PR-40 microphone?
  Yes, it works perfectly with Heil PR-40, as it is a dynamic microphone.

• Can this Cloudlifter work with Xvive phantom power supply?
  The Cloudlifter is powered by phantom power but doesn’t use phantom power to power the mics. Yes, it works with the Xvive phantom power supply.

• Does this need to be powered with phantom power even with an audio interface and dynamic microphone?
  Yes, the dynamic microphones have very low power on their own, it uses the power from the interface and uses it to boost the mic signal.

• Can I use with Sennheiser E865?
  No, this can’t be used with Sennheiser E865.

• Can I plug this directly into my microphone (electro-voice re320) in order to avoid the 2nd cable?
  No, you can’t plug this directly as it wouldn’t fit.

• Is this used really for when you’re using 4 mics plugged into an interface?
  This version is for 1 microphone only.

• Can a Cloudlifter improve the signal for recording with a Zoom H4n?
  The Cloudlifter uses phantom power to boost the signal of the microphone. It gives the mic a 24dB boost and works very well with the Zoom H4n.

• Will it work with Shure Beta 57a?
  Yes, it works with Shure Beta 57a.

• Will it work with Shure Beta 58a?
  The Shure Beta 58a doesn’t require Cloudlifter.
