Safety Information

  1. Read Instructions – All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the appliance is operated.

  2. Retain Instructions – The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference.

  3. Heed Warnings – All warnings on the appliance and in the operating instructions should be adhered to.

  4. Water and Moisture – Do not use the apparatus near water (e.g. bath tub, sink, swimming pool) or in wet places or tropical climates. Do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on top of the apparatus. Do not expose the apparatus to dripping or splashing.

  5. Setup – The apparatus should only be placed on a stable, flat surface. Do not let the apparatus fall down or expose it to shock.

  6. W-LAN RF Exposure – To maintain the compliance with the W-LAN RF exposure requirements, place the product at least 20 cm (away from nearby persons except when operating the controls.

  7. Wall or Ceiling Mounting – This product is not intended for wall or ceiling mounting.

  8. Ventilation – The appliance should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. For example, the appliance should not be situated on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings; or, placed in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede the flow of air through the ventilation openings. Ensure a minimum distance of 5 cm around the apparatus for sufficient ventilation. Ensure that the ventilation is not impeded by covering the ventilation openings with items such as newspapers, table-cloths, curtains, etc.

  9. Heat – The appliance should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances (including amplifiers) that produce heat.

  10. Power Sources – The appliance should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the appliance.

  11. Cables and Plugs – The mains plug shall remain readily operable. All cables should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the appliance.

  12. Cleaning – The appliance should be cleaned only as recommended by the manufacturer. Clean by wiping with a dry and clean cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or detergents. Always pull the mains plug before cleaning the unit.

  13. Non-use Periods – The power cord of the appliance should be unplugged from the outlet when left unused for a long period of time.

  14. Object and Liquid Entry – Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the enclosure through openings.

  15. Damage Requiring Service – The appliance should be serviced by qualified service personnel when:
    a) The power-supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
    b) Objects have fallen, or liquid has been spilled into the appliance; or
    c) The appliance has been exposed to rain; or
    d) The appliance does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; or
    e) The appliance has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.

  16. Servicing – The user should not attempt to service the appliance beyond that described in the operating instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.

  17. Open Fire – Keep the apparatus away from open fires. Do not place naked flame sources, such as lighted candles on the apparatus.

  18. Thunderstorms – During a thunderstorm, the mains plug should be unplugged.

  19. Safety Check – After servicing the technician should conduct a safety check in order to ensure that the apparatus is working properly and safely.

  20. Batteries – Always place batteries in the correct polarization into electrical components. Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type. Do not mix old and new batteries. Take attention to the environmental aspects of battery disposal. Batteries shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine, fire or the like. Remove batteries before disposing of the product.

  21. Volume Levels – To prevent possible hearing damage, do not listen at high volume levels for long periods.

  22. Headphones – Excessive sound pressure from earphones and headphones can cause hearing loss.

  3. To avoid scratches/damages always put CDs back into their cases after use.

  4. Do not expose CDs to direct sunlight, dust, dirt, high temperatures, high humidity or water.

  5. Cleaning disc

    • Use a soft cloth to wipe fingerprints and dust from the disc surface.

    • Carefully move the cloth from the center of the disc to its edge:

    • Never use benzene, thinners, record cleaner fluid or antistatic spray to clean CDs.

  6. Compatibility

    • Due to the numerous compression methods, some discs may not play.

FURTHER NOTES ON THE DEVICE Setting a safe volume level

  • If you continually listen to loud music, your hearing gradually adapts to it and gives you the im-pression that the volume is lower.
  • What seems normal to you can be already for long time too loud and unhealthy.
  • To protect yourself from this, set the volume to a low level.
  • Increase the volume slowly.
  • Damage to your hearing can be extensive and cannot be reversed.
  • If you notice a hearing problem, please consult a doctor.

Con densation

  • Condensation may occur when moving the device from a cold to a warm environment. If there is moisture inside the player, it may not operate properly. Don’t turn on the device and wait about one hour for the moisture to evaporate.

Saving energy

  • If the unit is not used for a long period of time, it should be unplugged from the AC socket.
  • If there is no playback in any mode (except radio) for 15 minutes and no button is pressed, then the unit will switch into standby mode automatically. To turn the unit back on, press the button.

Unpacking

  • Take out carefully the unit from the packing. Please keep the packing for further use.
  • Carefully remove possible protection cardboards and slipcovers.

Power Supply

Main Unit

  1. Connect the supplied adaptor’s DC output plug (2) to the DC-in jack of the unit.
  2. Firmly and securely plug the supplied adaptor’s AC plug (1) into a suitable AC main outlet. Make sure that the main outlet’s output power matches the required power of the adaptor.

Notes:

  • If the unit is not to be used for an extended period of time, disconnect it from the power.
  • Only use the supplied AC/DC adaptor.

Remote Control Batteries

  1. Open the battery cover.
  2. Insert two 1.5V “AAA” batteries (not included) in the remote control. Make sure to match the (+) and (-) ends of the battery with the (+) and (-) ends indicated in the battery compartment.
  3. Close the cover.

Notes:

  • Pay attention to the safety information on page 24.
  • The remote control works within a distance of approximately 4 metres from the sensor and within an angle of about 30° from the left and right side.
  • If the remote control is not used for a longer period of time, batteries should be removed.
  • If the remote control’s working range becomes less the batteries might be weak and should be replaced.
First Installation

When you first connect the unit to the mains socket, the initial setup wizard starts (if the unit is in standby mode, press the / VOLUME knob on the unit or on remote control to switch it on). You can run through this to configure settings for date/time and network. Once this has finished, your radio is ready to use.

Note:

  • If you wish to skip the setup wizard you can do so in the menu (setup wizard can be launched at any time in the Systems Setting menu).

When you choose to continue with the setup wizard, follow the instructions on the display:
Language: Select your preferred language. To continue when the privacy policy is shown press EN-TER.
Date/Time: Select between 12 and 24-hour format.
Auto-update: Select from which source time/date should be synchronized. If you choose “No update” you need to set time/date manually.
Set timezone: Select your timezone (UTC +01:00 for Germany).
Daylight Savings: Select “ON” for countries with daylight savings time.
Keep network connected? Select “YES” to keep network connected when the unit is in standby mode and when not in-network radio mode.
The unit will now search for available networks. Select yours and press ENTER to continue.

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a standard for easy setup of a wireless home network.
If your selected network supports WPS you can chose from the following options for easy setup:
Push-button: The device prompts you to press the connect button on your router. It then scans for a ready Push Button Connect network and connects.
Pin: The device generates an 8-digit code which you enter into the wireless router, access point, or an external registrar.
Skip WPS: Skip WPS and proceed with the network setup as you would otherwise.
For more info please also refer to your router’s instructions.

Key: Enter the network key

Once you’ve entered the correct key, the Setup Wizard will be finished. Press ENTER to continue.

Basic Functions

Switching the Unit On & Off (Standby Mode)

  1. Press the / VOLUME dial on the unit or on remote control to switch the unit on.
  2. Press the / VOLUME dial on the unit or on remote control to switch the unit back to standby mode.

Mode Selection

  • To select between the different modes, repeatedly press the MODE button on the unit or on the remote control.
  • Alternatively you can select the mode from the Main menu.

Volume Control

  • Increase the volume by turning the / VOLUME knob on the unit clockwise or by pressing the VOL+ buttton on the remote control.
  • Decrease the volume by turning the / VOLUME knob on the unit counter-clockwise or by press-ing the VOL- buttton on the remote control.

Mute

  • To mute the sound, press the MUTE button on the remote control. Press the button again to turn the sound back on.

Note:

  • When you decrease the volume to level 0, the display will not show “Muted”. In this case you need to increase the volume again by pressing the VOL+ button.

Equalizer (EQ)

  • This unit has several different equalizer presets.
  • To select between different EQ presets, press the EQ button on the remote control to enter the EQ menu. Select the desired preset using the ▲/▼ buttons and then press ENTER.

Display Backlight & Timeout Function

  • The display brightness can be adjusted in 3 levels (high, medium, low).
  • The brightness level can be adjusted in the System Settings menu (System Settings > Back-light). You can set the brightness for operation mode as well as standby mode.
  • The Timeout setting in the same menu allows you to set a time after which the display brightness dims down while in standby mode.

Sleep Timer
The sleep function enables you to set a timer after which the unit will turn itself into standby mode automatically.

  • While in any mode, press the SLEEP button on the remote control repeatedly to set the desired time.
  • You can select between 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.
  • When the sleep timer is activated the display will show a sleep timer symbol with the remaining time at the bottom.
  • To change or cancel the sleep function, press the SLEEP button repeatedly to change the de-sired time or until “Sleep OFF” appears in the display.
Time/Date & Alarms

Time/Date
Time and date will be automatically synchronized through the mode which you select during the setup wizard.
That means that upon the initial installation of the unit, time and date will be set automatically through that signal and you do not need to set them manually.
If you do wish to set time and date manually, you can do so inside the System Settings menu.

Alarms
This unit enables you to set 2 separate alarms. You can select to wake to buzzer, Internet Radio, DAB+, FM or CD. To set an alarm the unit must be switched on.

  1. Press the TIMER button on the remote control or the unit to enter the alarm setup menu.\

  2. Select whether you want to edit alarm 1 or alarm 2 and press ENTER.

  3. You can now do the detailed settings (use the arrow buttons ▲/▼ to scroll through the items and ENTER to view the options, press BACK to go back to the previous menu):
    Enable: Set the alarm Off or chose between Daily, Once, Weekends and Weekdays (Mo-Fr). Time: Set the desired wake up time.
    Mode: Select the alarm source (buzzer, Internet Radio, DAB+, FM, CD or USB).
    Preset: When one of the radio modes is set for mode, select which station should be played (this setting is not available when buzzer is selected for mode).
    Volume: Set the max. alarm volume. When the alarm comes on, the volume will increase up to the set max. volume.
    Save: Save your settings.

  4. You can exit the alarm setting menu now. When you set the Alarm “On” it will sound at the set time/day.
    When the alarm is active the display will show the alarm symbol at the bottom.

Deactivating an Alarm

  • To deactivate a set alarm, enter the alarm settings menu and set Enable to “Off”. The alarm is not active and will not sound.

  • Alternatively, while the unit is in standby mode, you can press the TIMER button on the remote control repeatedly to set alarms 1 and 2 on or off.
    Stopping an Active Alarm

  • When the alarm is sounding, press the TIMER button or the button on the remote control or on the unit to turn it off. The alarm will come on again on the next day at the set time (depending on the set interval).

Internet Radio & Podcasts

Internet radio allows you to tune in to tens of thousands of radio stations from all around the world. Switch the unit on as described previously. It will start in the mode last listened to. Select Internet Radio mode if it isn’t already selected.

Internet Radio Menu

While in Internet Radio mode you can enter the Internet Radio menu by pressing the MENU button on the remote control or by pressing and holding for 2 seconds the MENU button on the unit. Navigate through the menu using the ▲/▼ buttons on the remote control or the TUNING/ENTER knob on the unit. Press the ENTER button to enter submenus or confirm selections. Press the BACK button to return to the previous menu or MENU to exit the menu.

Last listened View the stations last listened to.
Station List Enter the station list menu.
System Settings See chapter 15. System Settings Menu.
Main Menu Go to the main menu.

Station List
While in Internet Radio mode p you can access the station list via the Internet Radio menu.

Germany View local German stations.
Search Search for a station by name.
Location Search all stations by location.
Popular View popular stations.
Discover Discover stations by location, genre and language.

Presets
This unit enables you to store up to 30 of your favorite radio stations:

  1. Select a radio station which you would like to store.
  2. Press and hold for 2 seconds the PRESET button on the remote control or on the unit to enter the preset menu.
  3. Select the preset no. on which the station should be stored using the ▲/▼ buttons on the remote control or the TUNING/ENTER knob on the unit.
  4. Confirm by pressing the ENTER button.
  5. To recall a stored frequency, press the PRESET button on the remote control or on the unit once to view the preset list, select the desired station using the ▲/▼ buttons on the remote control or the TUNING/ENTER knob on the unit and press ENTER to play that station.
    Alternatively you can select the desired preset station directly by pressing the corresponding Number button on the remote control.

Podcasts
To find and listen to your favorite Podcasts, select “Podcasts” from the mode selection menu.

USB

  1. Switch the unit on as described previously. It will start in the mode last listened to. Select USB mode if it isn’t already selected.
  2. Insert a USB stick into the USB port on the unit.
  3. Playback starts automatically with the first track.
  4. To temporarily stop the playback (pause), press the again to resume playback.
  5. To stop playback, press the Stop button.

Playback modes
Skipping, fast forwarding and fast rewinding tracks, repeat modes and random function in USB mode are the same as for MP3-CD playback. Please see chapter “12. CD Player” for the instructions.

Notes:

  • A USB device must always be connected directly to the USB port of this product. The use of a USB extension cord is not supported by this product. The USB port of this product cannot com-municate with a computer directly.
  • The reading time for a USB drive varies depending on the speed of the memory device and the number of songs and folders. In some cases the reading time may be as long as 60 seconds.
  • When the unit is off (standby mode) no USB device should be connected.
  • Always switch off the unit before removing a USB flash drive to prevent damage to your USB device. The manufacturer is not responsible for the loss or damage of data.
  • Due to numerous methods of compression it could be that some files or USB flash drives cannot be played.

DAB+

Switch the unit on as described previously. It will start in the mode last listened to. Select DAB+ mode if it isn’t already selected.

  • When you switch to DAB+ mode for the first time, the unit will do a full scan for available stations automatically. You can do another full scan any time inside the Digital Radio menu (press MENU and select “Scan”).
  • You can view and scroll through the channel list by pressing the ▲ or ▼ button on the remote control or turning the TUN-ING/ENTER knob on the unit and then select a desired station by pressing the ENTER button.

Radio Station Presets
This unit enables you to store up to 30 of your favorite radio stations.
To store and recall radio station presets the steps are the same as described in the chapter 8. Internet Radio.
Info
To cycle through information which may be broadcast from a radio station, repeatedly press the INFO button.
DAB Radio Menu

While in DAB+ mode you can enter the Digital Radio menu by pressing the MENU button on the remote control or by pressing and holding for 2 seconds the MENU button on the unit.
Navigate through the menu using the ▲/▼ buttons on the remote control or the TUNING/ENTER knob on the unit. Press the ENTER button to enter submenus or confirm selections. Press the BACK button to return to the previous menu or MENU to exit the menu.

Station List View the station list.
Scan Do a full scan for available radio stations.
Manual Tune Manual tune the frequencies.
Prune Invalid Yes – Deletes all invalid stations from the station list.

No – Cancel and return to the menu.

DRC

| High| This function reduces the difference between the loudest and quietest

audio being broadcast.

Effectively, this makes quiet sounds comparatively louder, and loud

sounds comparatively quieter.

Note: DRC only works if it is enabled by the broadcaster for a specific

station.

FM

  1. Switch the unit on as described previously. It will start in the mode last listened to. Select FM mode if it isn’t already selected.
  2. Press the ▲/▼ buttons on the remote control or turning the TUNING/ENTER knob on the unit to manually search for a frequency. Each press adjusts the frequency by 0.05 MHz
  3. To automatically search for the next available radio station, press the SCAN button.

Radio Station Presets
This unit enables you to store up to 30 of your favorite radio stations.
To store and recall radio station presets the steps are the same as described in the chapter 9. Internet Radio.

Note: Due to software limitations the preset list in FM mode will show the frequency, not the station name.

RDS (Radio Data System)
This product is equipped with an RDS decoder. RDS allows text information to be transmitted by a ra-dio station together with the audio broadcast. This text information can include name of the radio sta-tion, name of the current program or song, news headlines, etc. and may vary from station to station. When you have tuned into a radio station that is broadcasting RDS information, the RDS symbol will be shown in the display.

  • To cycle through such RDS information press the INFO button.
    Notes:

  • Not all radio stations transmit RDS information. In such cases the unit will not show any informa-tion.

  • RDS information broadcast may vary from station to station.

  • If the radio signal is weak, transmission of RDS information may be disturbed or not shown properly.

FM Radio Menu

While in FM mode you can enter the FM Radio menu by pressing the MENU button on the remote control or by pressing and holding for 2 seconds the MENU button on the unit.
Navigate through the menu using the ▲/▼ buttons on the remote control or the TUNING/ENTER knob on the unit. Press the ENTER button to enter submenus or confirm selections. Press the BACK button to return to the previous menu or MENU to exit the menu.

Scan Setting Select to scan for strong stations only.

Audio Setting

| When the signal in your area is weak (background noise) you can select to force mono in order to receive radio stations clearer. In “Mono” background noise is suppressed to some extent.
System Settings| See chapter 15. System Settings Menu.
Main Menu| Go to the main menu.

CD Player

  1. Switch the unit on as described previously. It will start in the mode last listened to. Select CD mode if it isn’t already selected.
  2. Open the CD door by gently pressing on the area marked Open/Close. Insert a disc with the printed side facing up.
  3. Close the CD door by gently pressing it down. The CD is being read.
  4. Playback starts automatically with the first track.
  5. To temporarily stop the playback (pause), press the Play/Pause button once. Press the button again to resume playback.
  6. To stop playback, press the Stop button.

Fast Forward / Fast Rewind & Skipping Tracks

  • To jump to the beginning of the currently playing track, press the button once. Press it a second time to skip to the previous track.
  • To skip to the next track, press the button once.
  • To fast forward the currently playing track, press and hold the button. Once you reach the desired section of the track, release the button to resume normal playback.
  • To fast rewind the currently playing track, press and hold the button. Once you reach the desired section of the track, release the button to resume normal playback.
  • If the disc contains folders you can select these by pressing the FOLDER ▲/▼ buttons.

Repeat Modes
At any time during playback press the REPEAT button on the remote control repeatedly to select between

  • Repeat One – the current track will be repeated.
  • Repeat Folder (if the disc contains folders/albums) – the current folder will be repeated.
  • Repeat All – All tracks on the CD or USB will be repeated.

Note:

  • To disable the Repeat mode, press the according REPEAT button repeatedly until the repeat indicators disappear from the display.

Random Playback

  • At any time during playback press the RANDOM button on the remote control to play all tracks on the disc in random order.
  • Press the button again to disable the random playback function.

Intro Mode

  • To play only the first 10 seconds of each song, press the INTRO button on the remote control.
  • To disable this feature, press the INTRO button again.

Programming Track Order
You can store up to 20 tracks in a desired sequence.

  1. While in CD stop mode, press the PRESET button. “T01” and “P01” will be shown in the display.

  2. Using the / buttons, select the track to be played first in the sequence.
    If the disc contains several albums, select the album/folder first using the FOLDER ▲/▼ buttons,followed by the track.

  3. Press the ENTER button again. “P02” will be shown in the display.

  4. Repeat the steps 2 – 3 to select up to 20 tracks for your sequence.

  5. Press the Play/Pause button to start the playback of your sequence.

  6. To stop playback, press the Stop button. To delete your sequence press this button a second time.

Bluetooth
The Bluetooth® function let’s you stream music from your smartphone, tablet or any other Bluetooth® enabled device through the speakers of MC 6490DI.

  1. To use the Bluetooth® feature, first switch the unit into Bluetooth® mode. The Bluetooth® icon in the display will be flflashing when there is no device paired.

  2. Go to your device’s Bluetooth® settings and search for MC 6490DI.

  3. Once your device shows MC 6490DI, connect and pair it. When a device is paired, the Bluetooth® icon will be shown steadily. You can now enjoy music from your device through the speakers of
    MC 6490DI.

  4. To disconnect your device you can do so on your device

    Bluetooth® devices and local conditions (e.g. walls, metallic casing that covers the device, or other devices nearby that operate in the same frequency).

  2. The appliance can be connected only to one Bluetooth® device at a time.

  3. If the connected device goes out of Bluetooth® range, the appliance will reconnect automatically when the device comes back into range.

  4. When switched back to Bluetooth® mode, the appliance automatically starts reconnecting with last paired device, if available.

  5. To avoid your previously paired device automatically connecting to MC 6490DI, unpair it in your device’s settings.

System Settings Menu

Equalizer| Select equalizer presets and set and select your own equalizer.

AUX Input
You can connect the audio output of an external device such as an MP3 player to this unit to listen to the sound of that device through the amplifier of this music system.

  1. To connect the external device please use a standard stereo audio cable (3.5 mm to 3.5 mm plugs) to connect the headphone out or audio line out of the external device to the AUX input socket of this unit.
  2. Turn on the unit and select AUX mode.
  3. Switch the external device (e.g. MP3 player) on.
  4. Start playback of the external device and adjust the volume control of the main unit to the desiredlevel.
  5. Remember to switch off the unit when you are finished using the external device.

Headphone Connector
A headphone jack is located at the front of the unit. When the unit is powered on and playing music, Myou can connect headphones (not included) to the headphone jack for your private listening. Mind the safety information from page 24 on.
With headphones connected the unit’s speakers are disabled. To listen via the speakers again, disconnect Mthe headphones.

Troubleshooting

Error Remedy

The device does not switch on

or turns off suddenly.

| 1.                  Check if the power adaptor is connected properly.

2.                  The device may malfunction when used in areas with strong radio interference. The device will work properly again once interference ceases.

No sound or low sound.| 1.        Turn on the sound as it may be muted.

2.        Increase the volume.

3.        Pull any connected headphone or speaker from the connector sockets.

4.        AUX In mode: Check if the audio cable is connected properly

and the volume of the source is large enough.

No network connection can be established.| 1.        Check the WLAN function.

2.        Try to set an IP address at the device.

3.        Activate the DHCP function on the router and make the con- nection again at the device.

4.        Check if the firewall is activated on the network – set the

respective program in such a way that access is possible.

5.        Reboot the router.

WiFi connection cannot be established.| 1.                  Check the availability of WLAN network on the router.

2.                  Place the device closer to the router.

3.                  Make sure the password is correct.

WiFi gets disconnected.| 1.     If the connection is lost in standby mode, make sure that the setting “Keep network connected” (in Setup Wizard or menu System settings > Network > Keep network connected ) is set to “Yes”.
No station is found.| 1.     Check the network as well as the access point and firewall.

2.     The station may not be available currently, try it again later or select another station.

3.     The link of the station is changed or the station no longer

transmits.

No signal or hiss in DAB or FM mode.| 1.                  Check/move the antenna. Also try to adjust the length of antenna.

2.                  Move the radio to another location.

3.                  FM mode: Set the Audio Setting to “Mono”.

No stations available / burbling

/ intermittent in DAB mode.

| 1.        Move the radio.

2.        Rescan local stations only (high-strength).

3.        Check the local DAB+ coverage.

Alarm does not work.| 1.        Switch on the alarm.

2.        Due to the volume setting, refer to the solutions of “No sound”.

3.        The source of alarm was set to be radio but there is no net- work connection. Change the source of alarm or reconfigure the connection.

All other undetermined cases.| 1.                  The device may be processing a large amount of data after a period of operation, no matter in which mode, it will cause malfunction. Reboot the device if necessary.

2.                  Strong electromagnetic interference may interfere and cause malfunctions to the device. If the display indicates a problem, move the device away from near devices which cause electro-

magnetic interference or reset the device.
