General Information

Primarily, the 6600 Series converts the park 120 volts AC into 12 volts to operate your DC appliances such as 12 volt lights, fans, furnace and water pump. The 6600 Series also contains the RV’s 120 volt AC breakers that protect the AC appliances and outlets. All 6626 models (and 6620 models with code “C”) also contain an automatic battery charger that will charge the RV battery while the RV is plugged into shore power.

All user functions (resetting breakers, replacing DC fuses, and manual power transfer) are accessed by grasping the upper area of both sides of the plastic door and pulling.

Operation

The power converter operates only when the RV is plugged into a 120 volt receptacle. The 6600 Series models are rated for use with a standard 120 Volt 30 amp RV type shoreline cord. All 6600 Series models contain over temperature protection; if the unit is loaded beyond the name place rating or the ventilation slots are obstructed, the unit will cycle off then automatically turn back on.

12 Volts DC From Converter (models 6606, 6612)

To operate DC appliances from the converter, plug in the shore-line cord of the RV to a 120 volt, 30 amp receptacle. A manual “converter-to-battery” switch, located behind the plastic converter door, on the lower right hand corner of the faceplate, must be in the “CONVERTER” position.

No damage will result if the switch is left in the “BATTERY” position, but the DC appliances will be operating from battery power, which will eventually be depleted.

12 Volts DC From Converter (models 6620, 6626)

To operate DC appliances from the converter, plug in the shore-line cord of the RV to a 120 volt, 30 amp receptacle. An automatic relay will disconnect the battery from the DC appliances and switch them to converter power. No user adjustments are necessary.

All 6626 models (and 6620 models with code “C”) will automati-cally charge and maintain the RV battery while the converter is on, no user adjustments are necessary.
For more information, see the section titled “Automatic Battery Charger”.

12 Volts DC From Battery (models 6606, 6612)

To operate the DC appliances from battery power, such as when 120 volts AC is not available, the manual “Converter-to-Battery” switch must be in the “BATTERY” position.

The manual switch is located behind the plastic converter door and on the lower right hand corner of the faceplate.

NOTE: If batteries are not installed, the DC appliances will only operate when the converter is on and the switch is in the “CON-VERTER” position.

This switch also has a center “OFF” position for long term stor-age of the RV. Putting the switch in this position will disconnect all DC appliances from the converter, eliminating the possibility of the battery being discharged. Note there may be DC loads connected directly to the battery that will not be turned off by the converter switch.

MagneTek recommends inspecting and charging the RV battery once a month during long periods of non-use to maintain the life of the battery.

12 Volts DC From Battery (models 6620, 6626)

To operate the DC appliances from battery power, the RV shore-line cord must be unplugged, or you may shut off the AC branch circuit that protects the converter, which is the first 15 amp breaker from the left on the converter faceplate.

When the shoreline cord is unplugged or the converter AC circuit is off, an automatic relay connects the DC appliances to the battery. This same relay disconnects the battery from the DC appliances when the shoreline is plugged into 120 volts AC, allowing the power converter to operate those appliances .

Note: If batteries are not installed, the DC appliances will only operate when the converter is on.

Automatic Battery Charger

(standard on model 6626, code “C” on model 6620)

The 6600 Series charger is fully automatic and regulated, which means it always monitors the battery condition and sends the correct amount of current needed to recharge and maintain the battery, without over-charging.

The charger is protected by a 5 amp automatic reset circuit breaker. In the event of the charger being overloaded, the breaker will “ping” off, and reset momentarily. If this condition continues for more than 30 minutes, the charger may be dam-aged permanently.

Note: If the converter charger is left on for long periods, the bat-tery fluid level should be checked once a month.

All batteries “gas” as they are used (discharged) and recharged, causing theiguid level in the battery to evaporate. If this fluid level drops below the battery plates, exposing them to air, the battery performance will be greatly reduced eventually causing the need for battery replacement.

During long periods of non-use, MagneTek recommends plugging in the RV shoreline over night, once a month to maintain the life of the battery.

AC Power Distribution Section

All 6600 Series converters contain the AC breakers that protect the AC appliances. These appliances may include, but are not limited to, AC receptacles, the power converter and roof air conditioners.

If a breaker trips because of an overload, reset it, first by shutting the breaker off (moving the handle down), then turning the breaker back on by moving the handle up.

Note: If the breaker trips again, there exists an electrical malfunction and help from a qualified RV or electrical technician must be obtained.

The ratings of the circuit breakers in the 6600 Series are indicated on the breaker and by the option code letter, stamped on the lower-right of the front label adjacent to CODE. Below is the code and description:

C – Charger (optional on 6620 only)
D – 30/15 duplex, 15/20 duplex
H – 15/15 duplex
O – 15/20 duplex

(e.g. CODE 524D = manufactured the second week of May,. 1994. Contains 30/15 and 15/20 breakers.)
AC branch circuit identification is provided on the front label directly below the breakers. The converter will always be connected to the first 15 amp breaker on the left.

DC Fuses

Fusholders for replaceable automotive type fuses are located on the upper right hand corner of the faceplace. Maximum fuse size and circuit identification are provided to the left of the fuse-holders. To maintain safe and correct operation use only Little-fuse type 257 fuse.

Connection of a 12 volt TV or Stereo

The 6600 Series power converter does not provide ‘filtered” DC to operate electronics; that equipment must be connected directly to the RV storage battery. MagneTek does have a filter choke available that will allow most radios to operate directly from the converters’ unfiltered output. This choke (part number 6666A), rated at 1 amp maximum, is sufficient to operate most AM/FM cassette radios. Contact your local dealer for more information. MagneTek assumes no responsibility for equipment damage due to connection to the unfiltered output of the power converter.

Date Code

A manufacturing date and option code is stamped on the lower right of the label of each unit next to CODE. The date code is as follows: first digit(s) = month (1-12), second digit = week (1-5), third digit = last number of the year (1993 3). (e.g. CODE 143CH = fourth week of January, 1993. Charger and 15/15 breaker).
