RESERVE RSV560374 Fillmore Valve and Rim Tape
RIM TAPE AND VALVE INSTALLATION
WARNING
Do not ride your bicycle with improperly installed rim tape or valves. This
can prevent the tire from seating in the rim, cause the tire to come off the
rim, or cause a flat tire, which may result in a crash, serious injury and/or
death. For additional information, visit www.reservewheels.com.
Special tools and knowledge are necessary for installation and adjustment of
bicycle components and aftermarket bicycle supplies, including rim tape and
valves. For your safety, only an authorized retailer should install rim tape.
Make sure to set up a maintenance schedule with your retailer to keep your
bicycle safe and performing its best. Consult your retailer if you have any
questions or concerns about proper setup and riding your bike. Stop riding
immediately and consult your retailer if you suspect any problems with your
bicycle.
TOOLS AND SUPPLIES
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Clean shop rags
- Floor mat or towel
- Non-metal tire lever
- Tape measure
- Rim tape designed for tubeless rims
- Fillmore valve
- Scissors
- Small, sharp device or tool
PREPARE THE RIM
- Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the inner surface of the rim and allow enough time for the rim to dry. Failure to clean the rim properly will prevent correct rim tape application.
- Inspect the entire rim for any damage, including cracks, dents, or scratches. Consult your dealer immediately if you suspect any damage to the rim.
- Ensure that the rim tape is specifically designed for tubeless rims and is at least 2 mm wider than the internal width of the rim. This ensures that the rim tape completely covers the surface of the rim. As reference, all of the area shown below in blue should be covered by rim tape.
INSTALL THE RIM TAPE

Place the rim perpendicular to the ground on a mat or towel. Orient the rim with the valve stem hole at the highest point. Stand over the rim and brace it with your feet and legs.

Pull 1 ft (0.3 m) of rim tape from the roll. Adhere the end of the tape onto the rim bed 4 in. (101 mm) below the valve stem hole.
NOTICE
Throughout this procedure, it is very important to keep the tape taut. Failure to do so can result in improper rim tape application and can prevent the tire from seating in the rim, cause the tire to come off the rim, or cause a flat tire, which may result in a crash, serious injury and/or death. -
Hold your thumb firmly over the adhered end of the tape against the rim. Rotate the rim forward so that the free length of tape is in line with the adhered section of tape. This will allow you to apply correct force, or tension, on the tape.

Adhere the tape by maintaining tension on the tape and firmly pressing it down onto the rim in short sections with your thumb. Continue this technique around the circumference of the rim until you reach the starting point of the tape (not pictured).
NOTICE
Do not attempt to place the tape all at once or in long lengths. Make sure the tape adheres to the rim and is smooth and centered with no air bubbles or bumps. -
Once you reach the starting point of the tape, pull the tape taut another 8 in. (202 mm) past the starting point. Firmly press the tape down in short sections to adhere the tape in a double layer. This double layer should span approximately 4 in. (101 mm) on each side of the valve stem hole.

Keep tension on the tape roll as you press the last short section of tape to the rim. The tape roll will now be very close to the rim with no slack or length of tape that is not adhered. Use scissors to cut the tape roll free (not pictured).

Use a shop rag or the rounded end of a non-metal tire lever to firmly press the tape along the bottom of the rim (A), beginning at the valve stem hole and working in the direction the tape was applied. Then firmly press the tape along the side edges of the tape, where the tape meets the rim bead (B). Again, start at the valve stem hole and work in the direction the tape was applied.
NOTICE
Make sure not to damage the rim tape.
INSTALL THE VALVE STEM
- Locate the valve stem hole under the rim tape, using the opposite side of the rim as a reference. Use a small, sharp device to create a small hole in the tape directly over the valve stem hole.
- Install the valve stem through the rim tape and into the valve stem hole. Thread the nut onto the valve stem from the opposite side of the rim
- Firmly press the rubber end of the valve stem into the valve stem hole as you hand-tighten the nut.
NOTICE
It is critical that the valve stem is sealed tightly against the rim to
prevent leaking of air or sealant. Do not overtighten the nut. Instead, apply
adequate force to the rubber end of the valve as you hand-tighten the nut.
Make sure not to damage the valve or rubber end.
