General Guidelines

Refer to the Velleman® Service and Quality Warranty on the last pages of this manual.

  • Damage caused by disregard of certain guidelines in this manual is not covered by the warranty and the dealer will not accept responsibility for any ensuing defects or problems.
  • All modifications to the smoke machine or remote control are forbidden for safety reasons. Note that damage caused by user modifications to the smoke machine or remote control is not covered by the warranty.
  • Only use the smoke machine for its intended purpose. Using the smoke machine in an unauthorised way will void the warranty.
  • Familiarise yourself with the functions of the smoke machine before actually using it.
  • Never aim the smoke output directly at humans or animals. Keep the spray nozzle at a minimum distance of 5 m from humans, animals and objects.
  • Do not touch the smoke machine when in use as the housing may reach a temperature of up to 80 °C. Let the smoke machine cool down sufficiently after switching off before handling.
  • Never cover the smoke machine and do not install it on a carpet or wooden floor.
  • Fog machines are not designed for permanent operation: regular operation breaks will prolong their lives. Permanent pumping may overheat and damage the pump. A duty cycle of 30 % is advisable.

Features

  • electronic temperature control
  • powerful jet output, spreading the smoke over a large area
  • controlled via 1 DMX channel
  • timer and volume control via remote controller.

Installation

Install the smoke machine in a well-ventilated place, at a minimum distance of 3 m from any inflammable and explosive substance, and at a minimum height of 0.5 m.
Ideally, the smoke machine should be installed on a sturdy and level surface. If the smoke machine must be hung up, please consider following guidelines:

  • Have the smoke machine installed by a qualified person, respecting EN 60598-2-17 and all other applicable norms.
  • The carrying construction must be able to support 10 times the weight of the smoke machine for 1 hour without deforming.
  • The installation must always be secured with a secondary attachment e.g. a safety cable.
  • Never stand directly below the smoke machine when it is being mounted, removed or serviced. Have a qualified technician check the smoke machine once a year and once before you bring it into service.
  • Install the smoke machine in a location with few passers-by that is inaccessible to unauthorised persons.
  • Overhead mounting requires extensive experience: calculating workload limits, determining the installation material to be used… Have the material and the smoke machine itself checked regularly.
  • Do not attempt to install the smoke machine yourself if you lack these qualifications as improper installation may result in injuries.
  • The installation has to be approved by an expert before the smoke machine is taken into service.

Operation

Switch off the smoke machine and disconnect from the mains before proceeding.

  1. Unscrew the filler cap to open the tank. Fill half of the tank with a quality smoke liquid. We recommend using the HQPower™ High-Density or the Pro High-Density smoke liquid. Make sure not to spill any liquid so as not to damage the internal circuit of the smoke machine. Close the tank with the filler cap.
  2. Connect the remote control to the smoke machine. Insert the 5-pin XLR connector of the remote control into the 5-pin XLR input connection [4].
  3. Insert the power cord into the mains.
  4. Choose whether to run the smoke machine as a stand-alone device or in a DMX512 configuration.

Stand-Alone Use

  1. Switch on the smoke machine [1]. Let the smoke machine warm up for 8 to 10 minutes. The green LED [11] will light as soon as the smoke machine is ready for use.

  2. How to burst out smoke:
o Simple smoke burst: Press and hold the green button [11] to emit a smoke burst.
o Continuous smoke burst: Press the red button [10] for a continuous smoke burst.
o Timer: Press the yellow timer button [9] and adjust the interval between two bursts with the interval/output time adjustment knob [7].

  3. Adjust the smoke output with the smoke output adjustment button [8].

  4. Switch off the smoke machine and disconnect from the mains after use.

DMX Control

  • DMX connection: Multiple smoke machines can be linked through serial linking. Connect the 3-pin XLR output [5] of the smoke machine to the 3-pin XLR input [5] of the next smoke machine in the series using a highquality, two-core, screened cable
    (not included).

  • DMX chain with terminator:
A DMX terminator is recommended for installations where the DMX cable has to run a long distance or used in an electrically noisy environment (e.g. discos).
The terminator prevents corruption of the digital control signal by electrical noise. The DMX terminator is simply an XLR plug with a 120 Ω resistor between pins 2 and 3, which is then plugged into the XLR output socket of the last device in the chain.

  • DMX start address selection:
All DMX-controlled devices need a digital start address so that the correct device responds to the signals. This digital start address is the channel number from which the device starts to “listen” to the DMX controller.
You can use the same starting address for a whole group of smoke machines or enter an individual one for every smoke machine.
When all smoke machines have the same address, all the units will “listen” to the control signal on one particular channel. In other words: changing the settings of one channel will affect all smoke machines simultaneously. If you set different addresses, each smoke machine will “listen” to a separate channel number. Changing the settings of one channel will only affect the smoke machine in question.
In the case of the 1-channel VDP1500SM3, you will have to set the start address of the first smoke machine to 1, the second smoke machine to 2 (1 + 1), the third to 3 (2 + 1), and so on.

  • Use the smoke machine as described in Stand-Alone Use. Note that the series of smoke machines can be controlled using only one remote control connected to any of the units in the series.

  • Switch off the smoke machine and disconnect from the mains after use.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Switch off the smoke machine and disconnect from the mains before any maintenance and cleaning operation.

  • The smoke machine must be cleaned after every 40 hours of use. We recommend using the HQPower™ VDLCL liquid to thoroughly clean the tank, feeding tube and spray nozzle. Remove or use up all the smoke liquid inside the tank and fill half of the tank with the cleaning liquid. Reconnect the smoke machine to the mains and switch on [1]. Let the smoke machine run in automatic mode (red button [10]) until all cleaning liquid is used. Switch off [1] the smoke machine and let it cool down.
  • Clean the housing of your smoke machine and remote control on a regular basis. Use a moist, lint- free cloth. Avoid using alcohol or solvents.
  • Store the smoke machine and remote control in a cool, dry and clean location.
  • There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Refer to an authorized dealer for service and/or spare parts.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible solution
The smoke machine does not work when switched on [1]. Check if the power cord

is correctly inserted into the mains.
Check the fuse [2] and replace if necessary.
There is no smoke output when the green [11] or red [10] switch is pressed.| Check if the remote control connector is correctly inserted into the connection [4].
The smoke machine has not warmed up yet. Wait until the green LED [11] lights.
Regularly check the liquid level inside the tank and refill if necessary.
Residue may have clogged up the output nozzle. Clean the nozzle by gently poking the inside with a needle.
The nozzle keeps emitting smokeeven after releasing the green [11] or red [10] switch.| Occasionally, a little smoke escapes from the nozzle after a smoke burst. This is absolutely normal.
Immediately switch off the smoke machine and disconnect from the mains if the smoke burst does not stop after releasing the green [11] or red [10] switch.

Remember to contact your HQPower™ service agent in case problems persist.
