5DEV Shimano Steps EP8 Crank Instruction Manual

Introduction

This manual provides instructions for mounting 5DEV eCranks onto the Shimano Steps EP8 motor. It is crucial to carefully follow the instruction manual to ensure smooth operation of the bike and avoid any potential issues in the future. The installation of the cranks should be performed by a certified bicycle mechanic for optimal results and safety.

Procedure

Step 1 Mounting the Cranks
Mount the first crank to the spindle, ensuring that the gap at the end of the crank is aligned with the small hole in the spindle, as shown below:

Cranks

Step 2 Install the Crank Cap
Find the provided crank cap and put a drop of Loctite on its threads, or any other low/medium strength thread locker (shown below). Then, use a 6mm hex key to screw the cap into the motor-crank assembly. Using a torque wrench, torque the cap to 8Nm.

Step 3 Securing the Cranks
For both cranks, find the provided crankarm pinch bolts and screw them into the two slots in the top of the crank using a 5mm hex key. If your pinch bolts do not have thread locker tape on them or if you are reusing old pinch bolts from another crank, apply your own thread locker to the bolts before installing them. Using a torque wrench, alternate tightening each bolt in the following sequence:

  1. Tighten the inside bolt (A) until it is torqued to 14Nm.
  2. Tighten the outside bolt (B) until it is torqued to 14Nm.
  3. Tighten A again until it is torqued to 14Nm.
  4. Tighten B again until it is torqued to 14Nm.

Step 4 Repeat the Previous Steps for the Second Crank
Repeat Steps 1, 2, and 3 for the second crank on the opposite side of the spindle, ensuring that the two cranks on either end of the spindle are pointing in opposite directions. That is, the two cranks are sitting 180° from each other.

Step 5 Check Pinch Bolt Torques
Verify that the pinch bolts and crank caps are still torqued to 14Nm after the first ride.
