dangerous. Understand and accept the risks involved before participating.
Minors and others not able to assume this responsibility must be under the
direct control
of an experienced and responsible person. You are responsible for your actions
and decisions. Before using this product, read and understand all instructions
and warnings that accompany it and familiarize yourself with its proper use,
capabilities and limitations. Seek qualified instruction. Contact Black

product in any way. Failure to read and follow these warnings can result in
severe injury or death!
WARNING
This pamphlet explains the correct use and some common misuses of the climbing
equipment depicted in the illustrations. Other possible misuses exist. Correct
equipment use and the use of redundant systems will reduce some of the risks
associated with climbing. If you lack experience, use this equipment under
proper supervision. Belaying and rappelling are learned skills and require
proper instruction and practice. Improper belaying or rappelling can result in
severe injury or death. Although belaying is relatively simple, it requires
complete attention and commitment. The belayer is responsible for catching the
climber’s fall and there is no margin for error.
While these instructions explain the proper use and limitations of belay
devices, THEY ARE NOT INTENDED TO TEACH YOU HOW TO BELAY OR RAPPEL.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE SUPER 8
The Super 8 takes the basic “figure 8” design and transforms it into a
lightweight, efficient climbing tool. The Super 8 is designed to be used as a
rappel device in traditional Figure 8 mode. It can also function as a belay
plate, using the small hole for double ropes up to 9 mm each or a single rope
of up to 11 mm. Understand and follow your rope’s intended use.
Installation
WARNINGS
- Never take your braking hand off the rope or ropes under any circumstances.
- Every harness is different. When clipping a belay device into your harness with a locking carabiner, be sure that you attach the carabiner and belay device according to your harness manufacturer’s instructions.
- The Super 8 should not be used for rope soloing.
- Ensure hair, loose clothing and your brake hand do not get caught in the belay device during use.
- Fast rappelling can cause any belay/rappel device to become hot and potentially singe the rope sheath or your harness, as well as burn you.
- Smaller diameter ropes and new dry-treated ropes feed through belay/rappel devices faster and can be more difficult to control when belaying and rappelling.
- Be aware that sheath bunching can occur if you are using worn ropes or ropes with loose sheaths. Sheath bunching can cause the rope to jam in the device.
- Always consider how a rescue might be best carried out in case you or others are in need. (See accompanying illustrations)
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Climbing gear must not come into contact with corrosive materials such as battery acid, battery fumes, solvents, chlorine bleach, antifreeze, isopropyl alcohol or gasoline. After contact with salt water or salt air, always rinse, dry and lubricate metal products. (See accompanying illustrations)
STORAGE AND TRANSPORT
(See accompanying Illustrations)
LIFESPAN, INSPECTION AND RETIREMENT
The lifespan of your belay device is dependent upon how frequently you use it
and on the conditions of its use. With occasional use and proper care the
lifespan of a metal product is five to 10 years, with frequent use and proper
care the lifespan of a metal product is two to five years, and the shelf life
is indefinite. Inspect your gear for signs of damage and wear before and after
each use. Damaged gear must be retired and destroyed to prevent future use.
Factors that reduce the lifespan of climbing gear: Falls, abrasion, wear,
prolonged exposure to sunlight, saltwater/air or harsh environments. If you
have any doubts about the dependability of your gear, retire it. We strongly
discourage secondhand use.
