Using your CONNECT Wrap

Guidelines for safe & ergonomic babywearing
Babywearing is beneficial for both parent and child in many ways, however it is important that the baby carrier is used with safety in mind.

T.I.C.K.S rule
The T.I.C.K.S rule for safe babywearing keeps your baby close and safe.

  • T. Tight
The carrier should be tight enough to hug your baby close to you.

  • I. In view at all times
You should always be able to see your baby’s face by simply glancing down.

  • C. Close enough to kiss
Your baby’s head should be as close to your chin as is comfortable.

  • K. Keep chin off the chest
Your baby should never be curled so their chin is forced onto their chest as this can restrict their breathing.

  • S. Supported back
In an upright carry a baby should be held comfortably to the wearer so their back is supported in its natural position ‘C’ shape and their tummy and chest are against you. Check your baby in the carrier frequently to monitor your baby’s breathing and ensure your baby’s airways are always open. The safest position is for your baby’s face to be turned away from your body with their chin away from their chest.

Ergonomic positioning of your baby in the wrap

  • The ‘M’ positionredsbaby-PR3LOVED-Baby-Carriers-And-Wraps- \(4\)
    • The healthiest position to carry your baby, especially in the first 6 months, is to position your baby in the wrap in the ‘M’ position.
    • This allows their thighs to sit around your torso with hips bent so the knees are slightly higher than their bottom, with their thighs supported.
    • You should always check and adjust your baby to ensure they are in this position especially up to 6 months.
  • The ‘C’ shaperedsbaby-PR3LOVED-Baby-Carriers-And-Wraps- \(5\)
    • Your infant’s back should always be naturally rounded in the ‘C’ shape. As your baby grows, their spine strengthens (usually between 6 to 12 months).
    • Positioning your baby in the ‘M’ Position helps your baby’s spine to remain in the ‘C’ shape.
    • Visit redsbaby.com.au for more information on safe baby carrying.

Assembling your wrap

  1. Loosen the back straps on both sides and hold the wrap in front of you.

  2. Place the back straps over your head with the ‘r’ logo in the centre of your back facing outwards. Ensure the wrap straps are resting over your shoulders.

  3. Cross the wrap straps over your chest and tuck them underneath the front panel, to form a high ‘X’ on your chest.
TIP: The higher the ‘X’, the higher on your chest your baby will sit.

  4. Tie a knot behind your waist.

  5. With your baby facing you, place them into the crossed wrap straps, ensuring they fully cover baby’s bottom and back. Use the strap to fully cover your baby’s head until your baby can support it’s own head.
TIP: Position your baby in the ergonomic ‘M’ position, with their thighs spread and hips bent so their knees are slightly higher than their bottom.

  6. Tuck baby’s legs through the front panel as you pull it up to cover their back.

  7. Tighten and adjust the back straps by pulling them away from you.

  8. Tighten the knot behind your waist securely. Optionally, tie another knot in front.redsbaby-PR3LOVED-Baby-Carriers-And-Wraps- \(13\)
