AQUA MEDIC DrainTuna DC Runner X.3 Delivery Pumps
Operation Manual
Water level regulation for overflow systems
The DrainTuna can be used to maintain a constant water level in aquarium overflow chambers. The DrainTuna is only suitable for use with Aqua Medic DC Runners from the x.2 and x.3 series.
1. Included in delivery
– DrainTuna
– floats S1 and S2
– holding unit for floats
– 0 – 10 V control cable
– bracket for DrainTuna
2. Safety instructions
– When working in the aquarium, always disconnect all units from the power
supply system before putting your hands into the water. Connect all units to
the mains via a residual current device with a maximum residual current of 30
mA.
– Connection to pumps other than those mentioned in the instructions is not
permitted.
– Suitable for indoor use only.
– Protect the controller from moisture (humidity < 80%), splash water and
condensation.
– We recommend forming drip loops with the cables to prevent any water running
along the cables from getting into sockets.
– The electrical data of the DrainTuna must match the data of the power supply
unit used (12 V DC). This data can be found on the rating plates.
– Not suitable as a toy for children.
3. Start-up
The following operating procedure applies to Aqua Medic DC Runner pumps of the x.3 series:
3.1. Place the float holder in the drainage shaft so that the marking
(Fig. 3, No. 3) is at the height of the desired water level and fix it in
place using the screws (Fig. 3, No. 4). Lower the water level until both float
bodies are at the bottom.
3.2. Connections:
Fig. 1: DrainTuna
Insert the plug of the upper float S1 into the socket on the far left (S1) and
the plug of the lower float S2 into the socket on the far right (S2) on the
underside of the DrainTuna (see Fig. 1).
Connect the middle, right-hand socket (IN DC 12 V) to the 12 V power supply unit of the DrainTuna (do not plug the 24 V power supply unit of the DC Runner pump into this socket!) Connect the power supply unit to the mains. The green LED (Fig. 1, No. 1) on the DrainTuna lights up.
Connect the middle, left-hand socket (OUT 0 – 9 V) to the 0 – 10 V input of the DC Runner Controller (Fig. 2, No. 1). The display 0 – 10 V appears in the controller.
Fig. 2: Controller DC Runner x.3
3.3. Set the pump output to the desired maximum value using the rotary knob (Fig. 1, No. 6) on the DrainTuna.
Fig. 3: Adjust the water level in the overflow so that it is just below any emergency overflow (1) that may be present.
3.4. The mechanical drain tap is set so that the water level slowly reaches the mark (Fig. 3, No. 3).
If the power of the feed pump changes significantly due to soiling, the DrainTuna setting must be adjusted. This also applies after cleaning the feed pump or after changing the setting of the flow pumps used in the aquarium, which have a major influence on the flow of water into the overflow. However, experience has shown that the water level in the overflow remains constant for a long time with the help of the DrainTuna, as the DrainTuna can compensate for such changes, provided they do not become too large.
Display of the DrainTuna:
– Green LED (Fig. 1, No. 6): Power ON.
– Red LED on the left (Fig. 1, No. 2): Both floats down = water level too low.
The DrainTuna increases the pump output to the set value + 8%. If this is not sufficient, close the easy drain or tap further and/or increase the pump capacity.
– Red LED in the centre (Fig. 1, No. 3): Lower float S2 up = water level o.k.
– Red LED on the right (Fig. 1, No. 4): Both floats up = water level too high.
The DrainTuna reduces the pump output to the set value – 8%. If this is not sufficient, open the easy drain or tap further and/or reduce the pump output.
4. Operation with DC Runners of the x.2 series:
When using DC Runners from the x.2 series, the pump output is not displayed as
a percentage in the controller. Proceed as follows:
Point 3 is different from the pumps of the x.3 series. Points 1, 2 and 3
correspond to the specifications under 3.1, 3.2 and 3.4 for the x.3 series.
1. Hang the float holder in the shaft. The marking should be at the height of
the desired water level (Fig. 3).
2. Connect the float and the power supply unit (Fig. 1), connect 0 – 10 V
cable. (0 – 10 V socket on the side of the x.2 controller).
3. Activate 0 – 10 V control on the x.2 controller: Press and hold the FEED
button until 4 LEDs light up. Set the pump output to the desired maximum
output using the rotary knob on the DrainTuna.
Maximum power: Turn the rotary knob all the way to the right.
Minimum power: Do not turn the rotary knob all the way to the left, as the
pumps in the x.2 series no longer start reliably at power levels below 50%.
(Attention: Exact power display not possible!).
4. Adjust the drain tap so that the water level slowly reaches the marking (Fig. 3, no. 3).
