Before you put your stove into operation, we would like to give you some
important information on this.
Please note the following:
- Please carefully read this manual before initial commissioning. It entails important information for the installation, operation and safe use of your new Bullerjan cook. In case you nevertheless still have any questions, please call your Bullerjan authorized dealer or contact us directly.
- Please take note of national and European standards as well as local regulations in your area before using your wood stove. Please consult your chimney sweep who as an expert can certainly provide you with this information.
- Ensure prior to the installation of your wood stove, that the load carrying capacity of the installation location is sufficient for the weight of the wood stove, including combustion material. If necessary, a weight adjustment by means of a shim plate or something similar must be carried out.
- The Bullerjan stoves cook are fireplaces for temporary burning. This means pursuant to the definition, in DIN EN 13240: A fireplace for temporary burning is a fireplace that provides the uninterrupted operation of a heating facility.
- A temporary burning stove is a stove with an authorization for the burning of wood, but it also can be operated around the clock. The term “temporary burning” in turn results from the assessment criteria for the burning of wood.
- Note: Upstream venting or else facilities that are operated in conjunction with fireplaces in the same room may cause problems with the operation of the fireplace. Please contact your chimney sweep in this case.
- Bullerjan cook fireplace stoves are coated with high-quality, heat-resistant paint. When the wood stove is fired up for the first time, a vapour and unpleasant smell develops as a result of the burning in of the colour. You should therefore open the doors and windows when the wood stove is fired up for the first time.
- The stove requires regular inspection by a professional. This is either your chimney sweep or your Bullerjan authorized dealer.

Set-up/Connections/Installation
General operation of Bullerjan cook stoves
The Bullerjan cook stoves may only be operated with closed fire room door.
Important! The stove may not be structurally modified in any way. Only those
spare parts may be installed which are permitted by Bullerjan GmbH. If the
stove is structurally modified or is equipped with non-permitted spare parts,
any liability and warranty claims become invalid.
Set-up
General Requirements
When installing the cook stoves and when connecting them to exhaust gas
systems, the relevant regulations under public law, particularly the
provisions of state construction ordinances and the approved firing egulations
are to be followed.
The flue gas connection of the cook is placed on the topplate of the stove.
The diametre is for Bullerjan cook: 130 mm for Bullerjan cook mini: 120 mm.
Combustion air supply
The room in which the stove is to be installed should at least have a minimum
volume of 4 m3 per kW of nominal heating capacity.
Safety distance to combustible components and furniture
Bullerjan cook: Distances to combustible components
Spark protection / protection of the floor
If the stove is placed on a combustible floor (eg. wood, laminate, carpet), a
floor plate made of non-combustible material is required.
This floor plate can be made of different materials such as safety glass or
steel plate. The bottom plate must overtop the front of the stove by at least
50 cm (from the combustion chamber opening) and laterally by at least 30 cm.
The following sketch illustrates the distances in detail
Connections
The connection piece between the stove and the exhaust gas system should be as
short and straight as
and laid rising. Connection points are to be sealed off. At least one cleaning
opening should be available to clean the connection.
Chimney
The fire assessment has to be made according to DIN EN 13384 with the triple
of values indicated in table 1.
We can only assure operational safety and the nominal heat capacities of
Bullerjan stoves if sufficient measurements of the chimney in accordance with
DIN EN 13384 has been proven and certified by your professional chimney sweep.
Draught of the chimney:
Regardless of the results that a chimney calculation program outputs after
entering the present values, it has to be taken into consideration that in the
cold state the chimney exhibits a basic draught /under pressure in the amount
of at least 5 Pascal (Pa).
In the event that the basic draught is too low, flue gas can ingress in the
installation room, in the course of the initial combustion.
The maximum draught that the chimney exhibits during the heating operation
must not exceed 16 Pascal (Pa). Insofar as the draught is too high, the wood
burns too quickly and the stove cannot unfold its full heating and
environmental qualities. Furhtermore, an excessively high draught in the
chimney may result in damage of the stove.
- For the regulation of the draught of the chimney, we suggest an automatic draught regulation located between the stove and the chimney.
- Please contact your authorized retailer or chimney sweep.
- Please note: If you run multiple fireplaces at the same time, special ventilation requirements must be taken into account. Please ensure in this case a controlled ventilation of fresh air by opening windows and doors regularly.
- Cleaning the chimney: The chimney must be regularly cleaned by a chimney sweep, normally once per year.

Installation / Installation of the stove
The Bullerjan cook comes completely installed .
When you have placed your stove at the desired position and after all the
attachments have been installed, only a few handgrips have to be made:
Check that the connection material is correct, so that the exhaust gas appearing at the combustion process can be directed into the chimney without problems.
Firing/User manual
Initial commissioning
IBurning in the paint:
Bullerjan stoves are coated with high-quality, heat-resistant paint which only
reaches its completely solid stage the first time the stove is used. There will
be smoke formation and odour when initially heating the stoves. Therefore,
when initially heating, open the doors and windows.
Caution Hot! During operation, the external surfaces of the stoves are very
hot. No contact should be made with the stove except at the handles. Please
always use the glove supplied with your stove.
Important! The fire room door must always be kept closed, except when igniting,
when refilling fuel or when removing ashes.
Firewood feed and permissible fuels
As a fuel, you should only use air-dried, natural hard wood (e.g. beechwood)
in the form of logs with residual moisture of less than 15 %.
Important! Never use treated or plastic-coated wood, chip boards, saw dust,
card board, paper or flammable liquids such as alcohol, gasoline or similar
items!
Burning materials of this kind emit a lot of hazardous, poisonous smokes and
gases and can also result in sustainable damage to the Bullerjan.
Bullerjan cook
Heating-up procedure
Please note, that in the ignition phase soot may condense on the viewing glass
of the stove. When burning solid fuels, which naturally create soot, soiling
can not be fully avoided. Therefore soiling of the window does not constitute
a defect.
Important! The use of larger quantities of combustible wood does not increase
the heating capacity to a major degree. Instead, the excess energy escapes to
the chimney. In addition, this results in high hazardous emissions and in
extreme cases can damage the Bullerjan cook and or individual parts.
Light the stove
- Open the air slide in the stove door – above the window completely
- Now insert two logs of dry wood at a sufficient distance from each other so that they are sufficiently flushed with combustion air.
- Stack up to 1.5 kg of kindling on the logs.
- Now light the kindling from above using a chimney lighter. Use fireplace matches for lighting.
Do not leave the stove unattended during the lighting phase. Never use spirit
or petrol for lighting.
Please note that soot and possibly condensation can form on the viewing pane
of the stove during the heating-up phase. This soiling cannot be ruled out
when burning natural solid fuels and does not constitute a defect.
During the heaing process
- As soon as the first load of the stove has burned down and a base ember has formed, please insert the amount of firewood corresponding to the nominal heat output of the stove. When the fire is burning well, you can add more.
- Further regulation is carried out exclusively via the air regulation flap. 1.8 kg
Note! The use of larger quantities of fuel does not significantly increase the
heat output; rather, the excess energy escapes into the chimney. In addition,
this leads
to high pollutant emissions and, in extreme cases, can damage the stove and
the parts installed in it.
combustion air adjustment
The stove is equipped with an air control damper. The damper is located on the
stove front above the door.
This damper influences the lighting and burning of the firewood. If this
damper is open, this promotes faster burning. If the flap is closed, the
burning slows down.
If windows and doors are sealed (e.g. in connection with energy-saving
measures), the supply of fresh air may no longer be guaranteed, which may
affect the draught behaviour of the space heater. This can affect your well-
being and possibly your safety.
Extractor bonnets that are installed together with fireplaces in the same room or room air system can negatively affect the function of the stove (up to the point of smoke escaping into the living space, despite the fire door being closed) and must therefore never be operated at the same time as the stove.
Cleaning / Maintenance
Care and cleaning in general
The parts of the Bullerjan cook which carry flue gas and the connection pieces
must be cleaned in the event of soiling, at least once during and after the
heating period. This can be done with an ash vacuum.
The combustion chamber has to be cleaned reguglarly.
Cleaning of the viewing glass
The viewing glass can be cleaned well with a lint-free rag and household glass
cleaner. In addition, special cleaners, available in retail stores, are also
suitable.
Possible causes of and remedies for malfunctions for any type of stove
- A whole lot of soot gets left on the glass
- A slight soot coating on the glass pane is unavoidable and i ncreases a little with each firing. In principle, soot on the glass has three different causes:
- The wood is too moist. This results in unclean combustion with high smoke formation.
- The ember bed has a temperature which is too low. This results in high smoke formation when adding wood and poor draught in the smoke pipe.
- Wrong handling, e.g. the primary air valves are not sufficiently opened in the ignition phase.
- Test the moisture content of the wood. Ensure that you main-tain a sufficient ember and refer to the heating manual if need be.
Temporary smoke odour near the chimney stove
This can occur due to weather-related pressure in the chimney and when it
typically occurs with a certain wind direction. If this occurs frequently,
speak with your chimney constructors about how to remedy this effect.
Operation: Please ensure that you never open the door in a jerking manner.
The resulting under-pressure can draw smoke into the installation room. Loose
lock first, wait until the fire adjusts to the new air intake situation (2 – 3
seconds) and open door slowly.
Discolouration of painted parts
A discolouration of painted parts is very rare and is attributable to
exceedingly high temperature in the stove. The reason for the excessive
temperature can be a continuous exceeding of the permissible maximum quantity
of wood or the use of unsuitable fuels (e.g. pallet residuals, cardboard,
large quantities of thin waste wood etc.).
Chimney fire
Causes: A chimney fire can occur when using the wrong com-bustion material –
e.g. wood moisture too high – or improper operation of the stove. Here excess
tar and water vapours (as a kind of greasy soot) and begin to cover the walls
of the inner chimney. If the saturation point of the condensate is reached, an
ignition of the chimney with major flame and temperature development may
occur.
This is how to take effective precautions:
What to do in an emergency?
- Contact the fire department
- Emergency call!
- Firmly close the doors and combustion air supply of the firing installation.
- Move all combustible items away from the stove.
- Keep/make free access to chimney cleaning locks.
- Notify the chimney cleaner.
- Have a fire extinguisher ready.
Important! Never attempt to extinguish a chimney fire with water!
Due to the evaporating water, this can result in a ‘blasting effect’ and the
chimney can be seriously damaged.
General malfunction
If problems occur which you cannot remedy yourself, let the fire burn down and
cool down the stove.
Before recommissioning, please contact your specialised dealer or professional
chimney sweep or contact Bullerjan GmbH directly.
