Charging your vehicle battery

Connecting the clip terminals

  1. Connect the PORSCHE Classic battery charger to your vehicle battery by clamping the red (+) and black (-) clip to the positive and negative terminals on your vehicle battery.
The (+) and (-) symbols are usually printed directly on or underneath the corresponding terminal on your vehicle battery. If there is not enough light to identify the battery terminals, use the torch function on the red positive clip.

  2. Before connecting your charger to the mains supply, ensure that the clips are connected in the correct position. If the clips are connected in reverse polarity, the warning light on the top-right of the charger will switch on. The built-in reverse polarity protection function prevents damage to the battery and charger.

Connecting the ring terminal cable set

  1. Remove the negative battery clip from your vehicle battery, and then disconnect the positive battery clip using a suitable tool.
  2. Fully unscrew the hex nuts on the terminal screws and slide the ring terminals onto the screws.
  3. Place the battery terminal onto the vehicle battery terminal in reverse order and tighten the nut with the required torque to secure the ring terminal between the battery terminal and the hex nut.
  4. Place the PORSCHE connector in a you easily accessible location.

Starting the charging process

  1. Connect your charger to the mains socket.
  2. If the battery charger is connected correctly, the charging process will start automatically and the PORSCHE logo will start to flash. The charger automatically detects whether you are using a 6 V or 12 V battery.
  3. To interrupt the charging process, press the standby button on the top of the charger, and then press again to continue the charging process.
  4. The PORSCHE logo will turn green when your vehicle battery is fully charged.
  5. The charger will switch to maintenance mode, which keeps your vehicle battery charged to an optimal voltage. The battery voltage will be continuously monitored, and the charger will emit a charge pulse when necessary to keep the vehicle battery fully charged at all time. The intelligent charging technology of the PORSCHE Classic battery charger prevents the battery from being overcharged.

Disconnecting the charger

  1. Before disconnecting the vehicle battery, unplug the mains plug on your battery charger from the mains socket.

Charging process

PORSCHE-PCG35661170-B-Classic-Battery-Charger- \(15\)

  • Step 1: Diagnosis
The diagnosis function checks the battery status and determines whether the battery can be charged.

  • Step 2 & 3: Recovery & Soft Start
A deeply discharged 6 V battery of more than 3,7 V or a deeply discharged 12 V battery of more than 7,5 V can be recovered and charged with a low-current pulse charge.

  • Step 4: Bulk
Charges with maximum current until approx. 70% of the battery capacity is reached.

  • Step 5: Absorption
Charges with increasingly weak current until 100% of the battery capacity is reached.

  • Step 6: Analysis
Analyses the battery‘s ability to hold charge. Batteries that cannot hold a charge may need to be replaced.

  • Step 7: Float/Full
The battery is fully charged and is ready to use. A trickle charging current is used to keep the battery fully charged.

  • Step 8: Maintenance
The charger will switch to maintenance mode, which keeps your vehicle battery charged to an optimal voltage. The battery voltage will be continuously monitored, and the charger will emit a charge pulse when necessary to keep the vehicle battery fully charged.
