Clamshell Template Instructions
The Clamshell Tool is used for making arcs or an all-over clamshell pattern. It has different sizes on all 4 sides. 1”, 2”, 3” and 4”.
SYMBOL GUIDE
| ruler foot
---|---
| start
| stop and needle down
| back stitching
Note:
- When using the template to quilt around you must have the ruler foot (#72 or #96) on your machine as well as a ruler base if you are on a stand-up machine.
- When using the template to quilt around you will be stitching 1/2” larger (the width of your foot) when stitching completely around the template or 1/4” wider if only using a portion of the template (the distance from your needle to the outer edge of your foot).
- You may need to start with drawn/chalked guidelines or seam lines on your quilt.
CLAMSHELL PATTERN FILL
|
---|---
Align the printed line on the template to your guideline, and sew from one end
to the other.| Move the tool over and align arcs with the horizontal line and
ruler foot. Stitch next arc. Continue in this fashion for desired length.
|
You can stop here for a single row of arcs.| Try staggering the arcs for a fun
variation.
Continue for an overall clamshell. When you get to the end of your base row,
backtrack over 1/2 of last arc, stopping at small printed center line on
template
as shown below.| Move ruler to this new position aligning the small arc with
the ruler foot and printed horizontal dash line with the top of the stitched
arcs. Stitch across to the other side of the arc. Continue stitching and
moving template as in previous row but this time in the opposite direction.
---|---
|
Fill in desired area with staggered rows of clamshell.| Try different sized
arcs as desired.
|
Start with a horizontal guideline or seam.
Align the printed dash line on the 1” side of the template to your guideline
and sew from one end to the other. Move the template over and repeat
stitching, creating a row of 1” clamshells. Needle down.| Without moving the
foot, change to the 4” arc. Align the printed line on the 4” side of template
to your guideline and sew in the opposite direction from your previous
stitching, creating an “umbrella” over 1” clamshells. Move template and repeat
as desired. The 3” arc works as well.
Squiggle #3 Instructions
The Squiggle tool is specifically designed to machine quilt across a seam line with a simple, even wave. It’s specifically designed to be easily manageable, which will quickly create a wide variety of designs. There are printed vertical and horizontal lines to help align the tool when creating your designs.
*Note:
If you are using the tool on a machine that moves (stand-up or frame), be sure
to have the ruler base attached to your machine. The hills and valleys on this
template is designed with the ½” foot in mind.
Let’s start with the basics. Place the Squiggle Template on a seam aligning
the dashed lines on the seam.| Stitch the wave stopping when you get to the
seam. Needle down. Slide the Squiggle
Template keeping the dashed lines aligned with the seam. Continue the wave.

The Ribbon Effect
By using the “flip” movement with the Squiggle Template, you can create some
interesting effects.

S-Shape Template Instructions
The S-Shape Template is great for quick and easy block and border designs.
*Note:
- When using the template to quilt around you must have the ruler foot (#72 or #96) on your machine as well as a ruler base if you are on a stand-up or frame machine.
- When using the template to quilt around you will be stitching 1/2” larger (the width of your foot) when stitching completely around the template, or 1/4” wider if only using a portion of the template (the distance from your needle to the outer edge of your foot).
- You may need to start with drawn/chalked guidelines or seam lines on your quilt. For block designs, an 8-point stencil might be useful.
SIMPLE BLOCK DESIGN I
Start with the ruler foot at the center point of your guidelines. Align the
S-Shape’s printed line with the vertical center line as shown and the tip
butted up against the ruler foot. Stitch Completely around the template.
Rotate the template to the 45° line and again align center lines and tip of
the template to the ruler foot. Stitch completely around the template.
Continue to rotate the template six more times; stitching around the template
a total of eight times.
SIMPLE BORDER DESIGN I
Align the S-Shape template with both points touching a horizontal line. Stitch
from point A to B, stitching only half of the shape.
Slide template along the horizontal line butting tip of template against the ruler foot. Continue stitching around the bottom of the template.
Continue moving and stitching 1/2 of the template. When you have reached the desired length of your design, reverse direction; moving the template and stitching back to the beginning.

Nested Mini Ovals Instructions
The Nested Mini Ovals are designed for use on a machine (either sit-down, or
mounted on a frame). If you are using tools on a machine that moves, be sure
to have a base such as an Extend-A-Base or ruler base attached to your
machine.
The dimensions of these tools are designed with the 1/2″ round foot in mind.
This means from outside edge to outside edge of the foot measures 1/2″.
Bernina foot #72 or #96.

SPYROGRAPHING OVALS
You will be using the printed lines on the template to keep your design even
and consistent. You will need to have lines or seams (shown in purple dashes)
on the block where the design is to be stitched. If there are no seams, (for
instance: a blank block as opposed to a four patch), use a stencil to pounce
in a grid, or use a ruler to draw in a set of cross hairs on the block. Line
template up with one edge of the oval on the center point of the block and the
printed line running straight up the key on the vertical line of the
crosshairs. The printed line opposite the key should be on the same vertical
line.
*Note: The first time you do this, it is easiest with the largest size. If you use one of the smaller sizes, you might find it helpful to use blue painter’s tape to help hold the pieces with moving the template.
|
---|---
Pick an oval size. Remove key from template in order to position foot on the
inside of the Nested Mini Ovals.
Replace key, being sure to match key to oval desired.| Starting at the center
of the block, stitch a complete oval. Needle down.

stitch a complete oval.
