- Step 1: Prepare Your Handwriting

Applique Your Handwriting SUPPLY LIST
- Sewing Machine with its usual accessories, including the manual, foot control, power cord, slide-on table, knee lever, extra bobbins, and zig-zag stitch plate.
- Presser Feet: #20 (or 20C or 20D, whichever is appropriate for your machine) and/or #23
- Sewing Machine Needle: Microtex 80 or 90, or Jeans 90
- Scissors: Large shears or paper scissors to cut through all layers; small, sharp applique scissors for refinements; thread snips; seam ripper.
- Fabric: Choose 2 fat quarters (FQ), one for the background and the second for the word you will be writing/appliqueing. Be sure there is contrast between the two so that your word shows up against its background.
- Thread: 1 spool of cotton thread, 50wt, to match your word fabric, if you’d like the stitching to be ‘invisible.’ When in doubt, go duller and darker.
- Or, choose a thread to contrast with your word fabric if you’d like the stitching to show, thereby adding another layer to your project.
