INSTRUCTION

Tip : Read through the whole guide before your 121, so you can be familiar with all of the steps.

Welcome back to your 121’s!
Hello, we’re here again! Back where the magic and true learning happens.
We hope that a lot of the new nerves are now gone, and you are feeling more familiar with our sessions. If not, that’s okay too.
In this last session, we jumped right into some structural frameworks of how to conduct a coaching conversation. By following the TGROW model, we can expertly funnel a conversation from a BIG topic to a smaller action item. If you’re having a corridor conversation, AKA a off-the-cuff moment, you can also assess this to figure out where you might be in the conversation. For example, if someone just starts telling you they can’t choose between a few options, maybe ask a few reality questions. If someone tells you about a big life change they are about to make, maybe encourage them to name one small action item.

The idea with TGROW is not to follow a script, but rather give you a compass of how to navigate conversation patterns in a way that will be useful for both you as the coach, and for the coachee.

Getting Started

Icebreaker!
Take turns to introduce yourself and go through Cebreaker: If you could watch a film or tv series again for the first time, which movie would you choose and why?

Learnings
Do a quick recap of the content from session 2. Was there anything that wasn’t clear? How confident do you feel about using TGROW?

Connect
Discuss what you think is the impact of a powerful question in a coaching context.

Watch and Learn

Today will be the first time you’ll properly practice coaching with your Circl Match. But before you do, watch this video about Powerful Questions with your pair and answer the questions below together.

Some questions to think about…

  • When are open and closed questions most appropriate? Can you identify the questions in the demo that encouraged James to take action?
  • What part of TGROW did some of these questions sit within?

TGROW Question Bank

Quick Task: Have a read of these questions and jot down your favorite ones on a piece of paper or in your notes app to use in your 121. Discuss with your match.

Topic

  • What do you want to discuss? How do you want to use our next 8 minutes?
  • What could we discuss that would have the most impact on what you want to achieve?
  • What are your reasons for wanting to explore this topic?

Goal

  • What do you want to achieve? What is important to you right now?
  • What do you want to achieve as a result of this session?
  • What will make you feel this time has been well spent?

Reality

  • Where are you now about your goal?
  • What has contributed to your success so far?
  • What skills/knowledge/ resources do you have?
  • What is working well right now? What are the internal/external obstacles?

Options

  • What are your options?
  • How have you tackled this / or a similar situation before?
  • What could you do differently? Who do you know who has encountered a similar situation? Give me 5 options.
  • If anything was possible what would you do?
  • What would your best
  • friend/mother suggest?
  • What else?

What Next?

  • Which options work best for you?
  • What one small step are you going to take now?
  • What actions will you take? When are you going to start? Who will help you?
  • How will you know you have been successful
  • How will you ensure that you do it?
  • On a scale of 1 -10, how committed/motivated are you to doing it?

Time to Coach

TASK
Take turns with your pair to coach each other. You will have 10 minutes for each coaching session.

Key aims:

  • Think of questions that will help your coachee gain goal clarity
    • Experiment with open and closed questions
  • Use the TGROW model!

Remember: Goal clarity is often about linking it to the emotion, and visualizing success with real specifics & which leads to some clearer steps.
We want to promote responsibility in the coachee so they can take a real step toward their goals. Ideally, your last few questions should encourage action. e.g. “What will you do next?” “When will you do this by?”

Watch out for…

Multiple Questions
How are you today? Was that meeting OK? Is Jill being a pain? She can be right? How are you feeling?

Advice
Okay, next time that happens – you should tell her you need a moment to yourself.

Leading Questions
Have you considered telling her how you feel? What do you think about that?

Wrapping up

  • Book 10 mins in your diary and TGROW yourself on one of your ‘everyday challenges’. (Nothing life-changing, but something that’s not getting resolved).
  • Look for a chance to TGROW someone else. Challenge yourself to help them gain awareness of Goals, Reality, Options, and a Way Forward.
