KOSTAL KEM-C Energy Meter Instruction Manual
Installation instructions for energy meter for three-phase systems
These instructions form a key part of the product. They must be consulted when
installing the energy meter. These instructions must be kept in perfect
condition and stored in a clean place easily accessible to the operator. Read
the installation instructions in full. Follow the installation instructions,
otherwise the intended level of protection may be compromised! You will find
more information in the data sheet available at kostal-solar-
electric.com/download.
1. Safety notices and warnings
⚠ The “attention sign” printed on the device means:
- Live parts. Cardiac arrest, burns and other injuries.
- Before the power cable is connected/disconnected, the power supply and load must be interrupted.
- Only operate the energy meter at the specified voltage and the specified current.
- The energy meter may only be installed by people who are able to work to the safety requirements.
- Access to the terminals is restricted to qualified staff carrying out maintenance work.
- The safety of the system in which the energy meter is installed is the responsibility of the person who installs the system.
- To prevent permanent damage, only operate the energy meter at the specified voltage and the specified current.
- Nobody is permitted to open the energy meter. Only KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH customer service staff are permitted to do so. The protective function can be impaired if the instrument is not used in the way that the manufacturer intended.
2. Brief description
This device is a digital three-phase energy measuring device, suitable for measuring active power through a direct measurement in power grids of no more than 415 V / 65 A, an RS485 interface and an operating temperature range of up to +55 °C.

4 Installation
4.1 Mounting 1
The device is latched onto a mounting rail in the control cabinet. It can be installed in any position provided that the LCD can still be read.
4.2 Grid types 3
The device is specified for measurement in mains form with 4-wire connection and 3-phase
5 RS485 interface 4
The RS485 interface is used for local networking with the Modbus RTU
protocol.
The maximum length is 30 m at 38400 bit/s.
Factory settings:
Address 1
Baud rate 38400 bit/s
Data bit 8
Parity None
Stop bit 2
6 Installation
- Fit KEM on DIN rail.
- Open connection covers.
- Connect mains cables (AC).
- Connect the RS485 interface to the inverter.
- Close connection covers.
- Switch on the power supply and check that the device is working properly.
7 Configuration
The energy meter is pre-configured in the factory for use with a KOSTAL inverter. No further settings are needed or possible. For details of the combinations in which the energy meter can be used, consult the document “Released energy meters” which is available in the download area for the inverter.
8 Cleaning
Use a slightly moistened cloth to clean the display. Do not use abrasives or solvents
9 Disposal
This product must be disposed of by an appropriate recycling service recognised by the government or local public authorities. Correct disposal and recycling help to prevent potential harmful consequences to the environment and people.
10 Customer service and warranty
In the event of malfunctions or failure, or should you require information or
wish to purchase additional modules, please contact KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH
or the dealer in the country in which the device is installed.
If the energy meter is installed or operated in a manner other than that
described in these instructions, the warranty shall cease to apply.
