USING YOUR Coffee Press
CARE & MAINTENANCE
To ensure quality coffee, it’s important to clean your French press properly by following these steps:
- Hold carafe upside down over your trash and gently tap the bottom to get the largest coffee grounds out. To prevent breakage or scratches, scoop out stuck pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula, never with a metal utensil.
- Rinse additional grounds off the carafe and plunger. Then separate the plunger, filters, and metal disks, giving them a thorough rinse to prevent build-up. You can wash the carafe with mild soap and a soft sponge but water is preferable as the soap may affect the taste of the coffee.
- With a soft brush, gently scrub all parts including the plunger, filters, and metal disks to remove any remaining coffee residue. Rinse thoroughly to remove all of the soap.
- Carefully lay the separated parts on a towel or drying rack and leave to air dry, or you can towel-dry them.
- To reassemble, place the retaining disk on a flat surface. This piece has a screw that attaches to the plunger. Then place the two mesh filters on top of the retaining disk, followed by the spring disk.
- Once properly stacked, tightly screw the plunger and rod duo into the disks and filters.
General tips for cleaning a French press
- Always use coarse ground coffee. Fine to medium ground coffee will give you grounds in your cup and clog the filters.
- Avoid using harsh scouring pads as they can scratch the carafe, which leads to cracking.
- Coffee grounds should be thrown into the trash not the sink.
- When not being used for a long period of time, dry thoroughly and place in a plastic bag or a kitchen cupboard for storing.
- This French press is not dishwasher-safe.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How often should I replace the filters on my French press?
Unless they fray or tear, even if you use your French press regularly, your filters should last for a year or more. When you do replace them, make sure to buy quality 18/8 stainless steel French press filters. -
Can you only use a French press for hot drinks?
French presses can be used for hot coffee or cold brewing. -
How hard should I press the plunger?
Press the plunger slowly as the vacuum is super tight; if it goes down too fast you’ll pop the seal and end up with grounds in your coffee.
