We know it can be challenging to keep your pets out of mischief. They wait until you’re not watching and then down goes the trash can, or there they are, sitting on the countertop again. Maybe you feel like you need eyes on the back of your head. SSSCAT® Automatic Spray Pet Deterrent can be that second set of eyes for you, even when you’re not home.
What is it?
The SSSCAT® Automatic Spray Pet Deterrent consists of a motion-activated spray holder containing a can of unscented spray deterrent. When your pet approaches, the SSSCAT® system releases a quick burst of spray, startling your pet. While the spray is safe and odorless, most cats and dogs dislike being sprayed and quickly learn to avoid it. By placing the spray deterrent near an off-limits area (next to a trash can, on your kitchen counter, in the doorway of a “no-pets-allowed” room), you can deter your pet from a variety of unwanted behaviors.
How does it work?
The spray deterrent recognizes motion up to 3 feet away using a passive infrared sensor that detects your pet’s body heat. Because of this, it may not work properly if you place it too close to a heat source (such as a dishwasher or heating vent), and it may not be able to sense your long-haired pet if she’s just been outdoors on a cold day. The motion sensor also detects human body heat; keep this in mind as you choose a location.

Let’s help your little troublemaker make good.
Set up the spray deterrent
-
Unlock the lid of the spray deterrent by turning it counterclockwise until the unlock icon on the lid lines up with the arrow on the base. Remove the lid.
-
Turn the lid over. Insert your finger into the notch behind the battery cover and pull the battery cover forward to remove it.
-
nsert four AAA alkaline batteries (not included).
To replace the battery cover, insert the two tabs at the front of the battery cover under the two clips on the base and then press the battery cover down into position. -
Replace the lid on the base, making sure to fit the opening on the bottom of the lid over the nozzle of the spray can. Turn the lid clockwise to lock it.
-
Place the spray deterrent near an area you would like your pet to avoid, such as a trash can or a countertop. The spray range is about 36 inches. Choose an indoor location where the temperature is between 60°F and 80°F. To prevent false activations, do not place the spray deterrent in direct sunlight or near a heating or air conditioning vent.
-
To turn the spray deterrent on, press and release the power button; the LED will glow green. The spray deterrent will go through a 30-second warm-up sequence, during which the LED will flash (green or red) 3 times every 5 seconds to indicate current battery status. After warm-up, the LED will flash once every 30 seconds. When the LED flashes red, it’s time to replace the batteries.
Replace the can
Each can will provide up to 120 sprays. When it’s time to replace the can, press and hold the power button; the LED will glow red. Continue to hold the button until the LED shuts off, then release. Unlock the lid and remove the empty can. Remove the cap from a new PetSafe® SSSCAT® Refill Can and place it in the base, turning it so the spray nozzle points to the triangle on the top edge of the base. Replace the lid and turn it clockwise to lock.
Switch modes
The spray deterrent is set to longrange mode by default. If it seems to be activating from too far away, try switching to short-range mode:
- With the spray deterrent on, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. You’ll see the LED flash red once and then, a few seconds later, begin quickly flashing red.
- When you see the quick red flashes, release the power button. The spray deterrent will enter short-range mode and turn off automatically; turn it on again to operate in short-range mode.
To switch back to long-range mode:
- With the spray deterrent on, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. You’ll see the LED flash red once and then, a few seconds later, begin quickly flashing green.
- When you see the quick green flashes, release the power button. The spray deterrent will enter long-range mode and turn off automatically; turn it on again to operate in long-range mode.
