Yes, you can connect via USB 2.0. For most read usage it is fine, but for writing, it may be slow and sometimes your optical drive may have to pause during the write operation due to the slow speed and it may affect the write operation. When using a slower speed to write some time the buffer will be empty causing write failure. When an optical drive writes the data to the CD, it requires a constant stream of data from the source, if the USB 2.0 speed is slow and your optical drive is fast, there may be a gap in the flow of data that the optical can write, and it will cause data underrun problem resulting in the created media being bad. This is dependent on the optical drive and software used.

Troubleshooting

If I connect, the optical drive and the system cannot see the optical drive, what can I troubleshoot the problem.

  1. Check all internal connections to make sure the SATA connection inside between the enclosure SATA cable and the SATA port on your drive is inserted securely.
  2. Check all external connections, ac adapter from the wall outlet to the power plug on the enclosure. The USB connection on the enclosure side and system side are inserted securely.
  3. Check if fully connected to a working system and power ON, can you press the eject button to open and close the door.
  4. If you are using a desktop system, try connecting to the rear of the system USB port that can give you the strongest USB signal. If you are using a laptop, avoid hubs or converter, connect directly.
  5. Another thing to try is to use another cable if you have it. You can also use a USB 2.0 cable (just to test, not a permanent solution) to see if the problem is the cable or the device.
  6. Try another computer to see if it will work correctly.
  7. Check the Device Manager to see if the optical drive is listed correctly.
  8. Please contact support@vantecusa.com for further help if you are not able to resolve the issue.
