Operating instructions

  1. General
These operating instructions include instructions for use and safety instructions. Please read the instructions carefully and note the requirements and relevant information before putting the device into operation. Please keep these operating instructions in a safe place for later use.

  2. Correct use
The EasyProtect automatic chicken door uses a cable pull to open and close the integrated sliding door on poultry and chicken coops . The au-tomatic chicken door is intended for use where poultry are kept. It is not intended for use with any other type of animal. The powered slider is automatically opened and closed when a certain level of brightness is reached, or at a set time. The manufacturer‘s warranty and liabilities are invalidated if the device is used incorrectly or tampered with, especially if an unapproved slider is used.

Installation

Preparations
Plan the installation situation. Lay out all of the components. If you wish to provide a mains supply to the automatic controller, ensure that a 230 Volt socket is available near the installation site.

Suitable installation site and installation conditions

CAUTIO; Risk of physical injury and material damage if used incorrectly!

  • Do not extend the pull cord.
  • The force from the pull cord can cause injury to humans and animals.
  • Incorrect setups can create danger zones for humans and animals.
  • The power pack is not protected against moisture. Plug the power pack only into a socket located in a dry and protected area.

For the chicken door, find an installation site that has a level and stable base. Be aware that while the slider is opening, a higher load is exerted on the device than its own weight alone. The installation site must be protected from the ingress of rain.
The electronics unit is always installed in an upright position with the cord outlet on the underside.

Attachment

  • Use the mounting screws included in the delivery to attach the chicken door to the coop wall.
  • Then ensure that the following requirements are met:
  • The guide rails of the slider are correctly installed, and the slider reliably closes the opening of the coop.
  • The gap between the slider and the coop wall does not exceed 5 mm throughout the path traveled by the slider during opening. When the slider is closed, the coop’s opening is closed at the top. There would otherwise be a risk that body parts are crushed when the slider is raised.

Commissioning

CAUTION: Risk of physical injury and material damage if used incorrectly!

  • Installations on the 230 Volt network must be carried out only by qualified electricians.
  • Protect the routing of the cable to the controller, so that the animals are unable to reach it.
  • If the device is supplied with power from the power pack, the battery is not used. However, you should replace the battery at regular intervals since otherwise there is a risk that the battery may leak. Spent batteries and the device itself should be disposed of properly without delay.
  • Close the housing before connecting the main plug to the socket.
Before you open the housing, always disconnect the mains plug from the socket (for example, if you want to insert the light sensor).

To supply the device with power, either connect the power pack to the device and plug it into a 230 Volt mains socket, or insert the batteries into   the device. To be protected against a mains outage, you can also use both supply methods in parallel. Connect the battery connection wires to the corresponding plug.

  • Open and close the door a few times to ensure it is operating smoothly.
  • The slider should move easily. If necessary, use a few drops of oil.
  • You can now make the relevant settings, as described below.

Operation

Time setting

To set the current date and time, press the OK button for around 3 seconds. The year currently set starts to flash. Change the value using the arrow buttons, and confirm the year setting with the OK button. The date then flashes with the month and day. Change the value of the date using the arrow buttons. The example shown is 08.06.

  • The next confirmation takes you to the setting for the current time.
  • Change the value of the time using the arrow buttons. Exit the Settings menu using the Menu button.

Automatic opening and closing using the timer

You can set an opening and closing time for weekdays (Monday – Friday) and for weekends (Saturday + Sunday). Please note that the door will open or close at the specified times only if the automatic mode is active.

Setting the opening and closing times

  • To set the times, press the Menu button for around 3 seconds. The option to set the week-day opening time appears. The opening time is
indicated by the symbol on the right-hand edge of the display. Use the arrow buttons to select your desired opening time, and confirm the entry using the OK button.

  • The option to set the weekday closing time then appears. The closing time is indicated by the symbol on the right-hand edge of the display. Use the arrow buttons to select the desired closing time, and confirm the entry using the OK button.

  • The option to set the weekend opening time appears, followed finally by the option to set the weekend closing time. The times for the weekend can be identified by a dot at the end of the time.

Automatic return to automatic mode
The next menu item to appear in the display is AC OFF or AC ON. Use the arrow keys to change the setting. If the function is active (AC ON), then the control unit independently engages in automatic mode in the next day’s cycle, even if you had interrupted automatic mode through a manual movement of the door. You can exit the menu by pressing the Menu button.

Activating automatic mode
To activate the automatic mode, press the Up key when the door is open or the Down key when the door is closed. Automatic mode is indicated by a small circle at the top of the display.

Deactivating the timer
If you want to operate the automatic mode using only the light sensor (see section 8.3), then you can deactivate the timer by pressing the Menu and OK buttons at the same time. The display will show ‘cut-off’. Repeat this process if you want to reactivate the timer. The display will then show the current time. Using the light sensor

  • To make automatic opening and closing dependent on the ambient brightness, connect the supplied light sensor to the device, and position the sensor in a suitable location. Ensure that the sensor is easily able to detect daylight.
  • The sensor must not be affected by other sources of light (e.g. artificial light from a street lamp or a house window). Do not position the sensor on roadways where light from the headlights of passing vehicles may affect the sensor.
  • Please note that approx. one minute may elapse before the light sensor responds to a change in brightness. This prevents the door from opening unintentionally because of lightning.
  • If the automatic mode is activated, the door is opened and closed when the set brightness level is reached. Even if the light sensor is used, the opening and closing times of the timer remain active (see section 8.2).

The following applies:

  • If the set closing time is reached, the door is always closed even if the light sensor still detects sufficient daylight brightness.
  • If the set opening time is reached, the door remains closed until the light sensor detects sufficient daylight brightness.

The sensor‘s switching threshold can be adjusted via the menu. Here, the controller detects the current brightness level and opens or closes at this brightness from now on.
It is recommended that the brightness level is set in the evening. After all chickens have returned to the coop of their own accord, you should wait about 10 to 15 minutes, and reset the threshold value. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • Press “OK” briefly three times to set the threshold value of the light sensor. The display now shows.
  • Press “OK” again to save the current brightness level. The controller detects the current brightness, and from now on closes or opens at the newly set brightness level.
  • After the setting has been made, the door opens or closes immediately.
  • If a light sensor is not connected, this error message appears in the display
  • The door should then close or open immediately.

Manual operation

Manual operation of the device
Use the Up and Down buttons to open and close the door manually. Important: As soon as a manual operation is initiated, the device is in ma-nual mode. Automatic operations are then no longer carried out.

  • Manual mode is indicated in the display by a dot at the bottom.
  • Automatic mode can be reactivated by pressing the Up button again while the door is open, or the Down button while the door is closed. Automatic mode is indicated in the display by a small circle at the top.
  • If the relevant function in the menu is active, the controller then changes back independently to automatic mode in the next day cycle (see Section 8.2.2). You can recognise the setting for independent return to automatic mode from the fact that, even when automatic mode is interrupted, the circle is shown at the top of the display in addition to the dot at the bottom of the display.

Manual operation via external button

  • The door can also be operated using an external button (e.g. item 70565). This is available as an accessory. For this, position the button in a location of your choice, and connect it to the device using the terminals provided for this purpose:
  • As soon as a manual operation is initiated, the device is in manual mode.
  • Automatic operations are then no longer carried out. Manual mode is indicated in the display by a dot at the bottom.
  • It is not possible to activate the automatic mode again via the external button. This can be performed only using the buttons on the display.
  • If the relevant function in the menu is active, the controller then changes back independently to automatic mode in the next day cycle (see Section 8.2.2). You can recognize the setting for independent return to automatic mode from the fact that, even when automatic mode is interrupted, the circle is shown at the top of the display in addition to the dot at the bottom of the display.

Integrated self-locking mechanism

The integrated self-locking mechanism in the controller housing prevents the door from being opened unintentionally from the outside. If the door is raised by hand, a bolt in the rear of the housing blocks the slider, and the door can-not be opened further. Predators are thus denied access to the coop. When opened automatically or manually using the button, the bolt is retracted into the housing for a few seconds, so that the door can move past. As soon as the door travels to the closed position, the bolt moves out of the housing and blocks the door again.

Switching the device off
To switch off the device, disconnect the connecting cable from the socket and remove the batteries.

Cleaning/maintenance

CAUTION: Risk of physical injury and material damage if used incorrectly!

  • Before starting any cleaning work, disconnect the main plug.

Ensure that the slider moves easily at all times. Clean the guide rails, and apply lubricant if necessary. Remove dirt and any objects from the slider’s closing range, to protect the motor and avoid transporting dirt via the cord into the inside of the electronics unit. Regularly check the condition of the cord for wear, and replace it in good time. Use our replacement cord to do this (Item 70552).

Maintenance and repair

The device does not require maintenance but should be thoroughly cleaned at regular intervals. In the event of a fault, the device must be taken out of use
immediately. If a repair is required, please contact a qualified electrician, or send the device to the manufacturer for repair. A faulty connecting cable should be replaced only by the manufacturer or a qualified electrician. Use only genuine spare parts. If a battery symbol appears on the display, the batteries must be replaced. After replacing the batteries, the time and date must be reset (see section 8.1).
