Product Usage
Step 1: Charging the Battery
- Ensure the battery charger (model: DC24SA) is plugged into an A.C. power source with a frequency of 50 Hz – 60 Hz.
- Insert the battery cartridge (model: BH2420 or BH2433) into the battery charger.
- The charging time will vary depending on the battery cartridge used. Refer to the specifications section for the respective charging times.
- Once fully charged, remove the battery cartridge from the charger.
Step 2: Setting up the Miter Saw
- Place the miter saw on a stable and flat surface.
- Ensure the electric blade brake is equipped and properly installed.
- Adjust the miter angle and bevel angle according to your desired cutting requirements. Refer to the specifications section for the maximum cutting capacities.
Step 3: Using the Miter Saw
- Ensure the work area is clear of any obstructions and debris.
- Secure the workpiece using clamps or a vice to prevent movement during cutting.
- Hold the mitre saw firmly with both hands and position the blade at the starting point of the cut.
- Activate the electric blade brake and wait for the blade to reach full speed before initiating the cutting motion.
- Move the blade smoothly and steadily through the workpiece, following the desired cutting line.
- Release the trigger and wait for the blade to come to a complete stop before removing it from the workpiece.

- DIRECTION OF FEED. Feed work into a blade or cutter against the direction of rotation of the blade or cutter only.
- NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNATTENDED. TURN POWER OFF. Don’t leave the tool until it comes to a complete stop.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES
DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with the product (gained from repeated
use) replace strict adherence to mitre saw safety rules. If you use this tool
unsafely or incorrectly, you can suffer serious personal injury.
- Wear eye protection.
- Keep hands out of the path of the saw blade. Avoid contact with any coasting blade. It can still cause severe injury.
- Do not operate the saw without guards in place. Check the blade guard for proper closing before each use. Do not operate the saw if the blade guard does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the blade guard into the open position.
- Do not perform any operation freehand. The workpiece must be secured firmly against the turn base and guide fence with a vice during all operations. Never use your hand to secure the workpiece.
- Never reach around the saw blade.
- Turn off the tool and wait for the saw blade to stop before moving the workpiece or changing settings.
- Remove the battery from the tool before changing the blade or servicing.
- Always secure all moving portions before carrying the tool.
- Be aware that this tool is always in an operating condition because it does not have to be plugged into an electrical outlet.
- Do not use the tool in the presence of flammable liquids or gases.
- Check the blade carefully for cracks or damage before operation. Replace cracked or damaged blades immediately. Gum and wood pitch hardened on blades slows the saw and increases the potential for kickback. Keep the blade clean by first removing it from the tool, then cleaning it with gum and pitch remover, hot water or kerosene. Never use gasoline to clean the blade.
- Use only the flanges specified for this tool.
- Be careful not to damage the arbour, flanges (especially the installing surface) or bolt. Damage to these parts could result in blade breakage.
- Make sure that the turn base is properly secured so it will not move during opera-tion. Use the holes in the base to fasten the saw to a stable work platform or bench. NEVER use a tool where operator positioning would be awkward.
- For your safety, remove the chips, small pieces, etc. from the tabletop before oper-ation.
- Avoid cutting nails. Inspect for and remove all nails from the workpiece before operation.
- Make sure the shaft lock is released before the switch is turned on.
- Be sure that the blade does not contact the turn base in the lowest position.
- Hold the handle firmly. Be aware that the saw moves up or down slightly during start-up and stopping.
- Make sure the blade is not contacting the workpiece before the switch is turned on.
- Before using the tool on an actual workpiece, let it run for a while. Watch for vibration or wobbling that could indicate poor installation or a poorly balanced blade.
- Wait until the blade attains full speed before cutting.
- Stop the operation immediately if you notice anything abnormal.
- Do not attempt to lock the trigger in the on position.
- Be alert at all times, especially during repetitive, monotonous operations. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security. Blades are extremely unforgiving.
- Always use the accessories recommended in this manual. Use of improper accessories such as abrasive wheels may cause an injury.
- NEVER hold the workpiece on the right side of the blade with the left hand or vice versa. This is called cross-armed cutting and exposes the user to the risk of SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY as shown in the figure. ALWAYS use vise to secure the workpiece.
- NEVER stack workpieces on the tabletop to speed cutting operations. Cut only one piece at a time.
- Some materials contain chemicals that may be toxic. Take caution to prevent dust inhalation and skin contact. Follow mate-rial supplier safety data.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS- This manual contains important safety and operat-ing instructions for battery chargers.

Before using a battery charger, read all instructions and cautionary markings on (1) the battery charger, (2) the battery, and (3) the product using the battery.

CAUTION – To reduce the risk of injury, charge only MAKITA rechargeable batteries marked on the charger label. Other types of batteries may burst causing personal injury and damage.

Do not expose the charger to rain or snow.
-
Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by the battery charger manufac-turer may result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons.

To reduce the risk of damage to the electric plug and cord, pull by the plug rather than the cord when disconnecting the charger.

Make sure the cord is located so that it will not be stepped on, tripped over, or otherwise subjected to damage or stress.

An extension cord should not be used unless necessary. The use of improper extension cords could result in a risk of fire and electric shock. If an extension cord must be used, make sure:
- The pins on the plug of the extension cord are the same number, size, and shape as those of the plug on the charger;
- That extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition; and
- That wire size is at least as large as the one specified in the table below.

Do not operate the charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped, or otherwise damaged in any way; take it to a qualified serviceman.

Do not disassemble the charger or battery cartridge; take it to a qualified serviceman when service or repair is required. Incorrect reassembly may result in a risk of electric shock or fire.

To reduce the risk of electric shock, unplug the charger from the outlet before attempting any maintenance or cleaning. Turning off controls will not reduce this risk.

The battery charger is not intended for use by young children or infirm persons without supervision.

Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the battery charger.

If operating time has become excessively shorter, stop operating immediately. It may result in a risk of overheating, possible burns and even an explosion.

If electrolyte gets into your eyes, rinse them out with clear water and seek medical attention right away. It may result in loss of your eyesight.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES FOR CHARGER & BATTERY CARTRIDGE
- Do not charge the Battery Cartridge when the temperature is BELOW 10°C (50°F) or ABOVE 40°C (104°F).
- Do not attempt to use a step-up transformer, an engine generator or a DC power receptacle.
- Do not allow anything to cover or clog the charger vents.
- Do not short the battery cartridge:
- Do not touch the terminals with any conductive material.
- Avoid storing battery cartridges in a container with other metal objects such as nails, coins, etc.
- Do not expose the battery cartridge to water or rain. A battery short can cause a large current flow, overheating, possible burns and even a breakdown.
- Do not store the tool and Battery Car-tridge in locations where the temperature may reach or exceed 50°C (122°F).
- Do not incinerate the Battery Cartridge even if it is severely damaged or is completely worn out. The battery cartridge can explode in a fire.
- Be careful not to drop, shake or strike the battery.
- Do not charge inside a box or container of any kind. The battery must be placed in a well-ventilated area during charging.

Bench mounting
When the tool is shipped, the handle is locked in the lowered position by the
stopper pin. Release the stopper pin by lowering the handle slightly and
pulling the stopper pin.
This tool should be bolted with two bolts to a level and stable surface using the bolt holes provided in the tool’s base. This will help prevent tipping and possible injury.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is
removed before adjusting or checking the function on the tool.
Installing or removing the battery cartridge
- Always switch off the tool before insertion or removal of the battery cartridge.
- To remove the battery cartridge, withdraw it from the tool while sliding the button on the side of the cartridge.
- To insert the battery cartridge, align the tongue on the battery cartridge with the groove in the housing and slip it into place. Always insert it until it locks in place with a little click. If you can see the red part on the upper side of the button, it is not locked completely. Insert it fully until the red part cannot be seen. If not, it may accidentally fall out of the tool, causing injury to you or someone around you.
- Do not use force when inserting the battery cartridge. If the cartridge does not slide in easily, it is not being inserted correctly.

Charging
- Plug the battery charger into the proper AC voltage source. Two charging lights will flash in green colour repeatedly.
- Insert the battery cartridge into the charger until it stops adjusting to the guide of the charger. The terminal cover of the charger can be opened by inserting and closed by pulling out the battery cartridge.
- When the battery cartridge is inserted, the charging light colour will change from green to red and charging will begin. The charging light will keep lighting up steadily during charging. One red charging light indicates charged condition in 0 – 80% and two red ones indicate 80 – 100%.
- With the finish of the charge, the charging lights will change from two red ones to two green ones.

- If you leave the battery cartridge in the charger after the charging cycle is complete, the charger will switch into its “ trickle charge (maintenance charge)” mode which will last approximately 24 hours.
- After charging, unplug the charger from the power source.
NOTE:
- The battery charger is for charging the Makita battery cartridge. Never use it for other purposes or for other manufacturer’s batteries.
- When you charge a new battery cartridge or a battery cartridge that has not been used for a long period, it may not accept a full charge. This is a normal condition and does not indicate a problem. You can recharge the battery cartridge fully after discharging it completely and recharging it a couple of times.
- If you charge a battery cartridge from a just-operated tool or battery cartridge that has been left in a location exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, the charging light may flash in red colour. If this occurs, wait for a while.
- Charging will begin after the battery cartridge is cooled by the cooling fan installed in the charger. (DC24SA only) When the temperature on the battery is more than approx. 70°C, two charging lights may flash in red colour, and when approx. 50°C – 70°C, one charging light in red colour.
- If the charging light flashes alternately in green and red colour, charging is not possible. The terminals on the charger or battery cartridge are clogged with dust or the battery cartridge is worn out or damaged.
Cooling system (DC24SA only)
- This charger is equipped with a cooling fan for a heated battery to enable the battery to prove its performance. The sound of cooling air comes out during cooling, which means no trouble on the charger.
- The yellow light will flash for a warning in the following cases.
- Trouble with cooling fan
- Incomplete cooldown of battery, such as being clogged with dust
- The battery can be charged despite the yellow warning light. But the charging time will be longer than usual in this case.
- Check the sound of the cooling fan, vent on the charger and battery, which can be sometimes clogged with dust.
- The cooling system is in order although no sound of a cooling fan comes out if the yellow warning light will not flash.
- Always keep the vent on the charger and battery for cooling.
- The products should be sent to repair or maintenance if the yellow warning light frequently flashes.
Conditioning charge (DC24SA only)
Conditioning charge can extend the life of the battery by auto-matically
searching the optimum charging condition for the batteries in every situation.
The battery employed in the following conditions repeatedly will be worn out shortly, and a yellow warning light may flash.
- Recharge of battery with its high-temperature
- Recharge of battery with its low-temperature
- Recharge of fully charged battery
- Over-discharge of battery (continue to discharge the battery despite the down of power.)
The charging time of such a battery is longer than usual.
Trickle charge (Maintenance charge)
If you leave the battery cartridge in the charger to prevent spontaneous
discharging after a full charge, the charger will switch into its “trickle
charge (maintenance charge)” mode and keep the battery cartridge fresh and
fully charged.
Tips for maintaining maximum battery life
- Charge the battery cartridge before completely dis-charged. Always stop tool operation and charge the battery car-tridge when you notice less tool power.
- Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge. Overcharging shortens the battery service life.
- Charge the battery cartridge at room temperature at 10°C – 40°C (50°F – 104°F). Let a hot battery cartridge cool down before charging it.
- Charge the Nickel Metal Hydride battery cartridge when you do not use it for more than six months.
Blade guard
When lowering the handle, the blade guard rises automati-cally. The guard is
spring-loaded so it returns to its original position when the cut is completed
and the handle is raised. NEVER DEFEAT OR REMOVE THE BLADE GUARD OR THE SPRING
THAT ATTACHES TO THE GUARD.
In the interest of your safety, always maintain the blade guard in good condition. Any irregular operation of the blade guard should be corrected immediately. Check to ensure the spring-loaded return action of the guard. NEVER USE THE TOOL IF THE BLADE GUARD OR SPRING ARE DAM-AGED, FAULTY OR REMOVED. DOING SO IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY.
If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty, or sawdust adheres to it in such a way that the blade is no longer easily visible, remove the battery cartridge and clean the guard carefully with a damp cloth. Do not use solvents or any petro-leum-based cleaners on the plastic guard. If the blade guard is especially dirty and vision through the guard is impaired, use the supplied socket wrench to loosen the hex bolt holding the centre cover. Loosen the hex bolt by turning it counterclockwise and raise the blade guard and centre cover. With the blade guard so positioned, cleaning can be more completely and efficiently accomplished. When cleaning is complete, reverse the procedure above and secure the bolt. Do not remove the spring holding blade guard. If the guard becomes discoloured through age or UV light exposure, contact a Makita service centre for a new guard. DO NOT DEFEAT OR REMOVE GUARD.
Positioning kerf board
This tool is provided with the kerf boards in the turn base to minimize
tearing on the exit side of a cut. The kerf boards are factory-adjusted so
that the saw blade does not contact the kerf boards. Before use, adjust the
kerf boards as follows:
First, remove the battery cartridge. Loosen all the screws (2 each on the left
and right) securing the kerf boards. Re-tighten them only to the extent that
the kerf boards can still be easily moved by hand. Lower the handle fully and
push in the stop-per pin to lock the handle in the lowered position. Adjust
the kerf boards so that the kerf boards just contact the sides of the blade
teeth. Tighten all the screws (do not tighten firmly). After adjusting the
kerf boards, release the stopper pin and raise the handle. Then tighten all
the screws securely.

CAUTION:
Before and after changing the bevel angle, always adjust the kerf boards as
described above.
Maintaining maximum cutting capacity
This tool is factory-adjusted to provide the maximum cutting capacity for a 216 mm (8-1/2”) saw blade. When installing a new blade, always check the lower limit position of the blade and if necessary, adjust it as follows: First, remove the battery cartridge. Lower the handle completely. Use the socket wrench to turn the adjusting bolt until the periphery of the blade extends slightly below the top surface of the turn base at the point where the front face of the guide fence meets the top surface of the turn base. With the battery cartridge removed, rotate the blade by hand while holding the handle down to be sure that the blade does not contact any part of the lower base. Re-adjust slightly, if necessary.

CAUTION:
After installing a new blade, always be sure that the blade does not contact
any part of the lower base when the handle is lowered completely. Always do
this with the battery cartridge removed.
Adjusting the miter angle
Loosen the grip by turning counterclockwise. Turn the turn base while pressing
down the lock lever. When you have moved the grip to the position where the
pointer points to the desired angle on the miter scale, securely tighten the
grip clockwise.

CAUTION:
- When turning the turn base, be sure to raise the handle fully.
- After changing the mitre angle, always secure the turn base by tightening the grip firmly.
Adjusting the bevel angle
To adjust the bevel angle, loosen the lever at the rear of the tool
counterclockwise. Push the handle to the left to tilt the saw blade until the
pointer points to the desired angle on the bevel scale. Then tighten the lever
clockwise firmly to secure the arm.

- When tilting the saw blade, be sure to raise the handle fully.
- After changing the bevel angle, always secure the arm by tightening the lever clockwise.
- When changing bevel angles, be sure to position the kerf boards appropriately as explained in the “Positioning kerf boards” section.

Switch action
CAUTION:
- Before inserting the battery cartridge into the tool, always check to see that the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to the “OFF” position when released.
- When not using the tool, remove the lock-off button and store it in a secure place. This prevents unauthorized operation.

- Do not pull the switch trigger hard without pressing in the lock-off button. This can cause switch breakage.
To prevent the switch trigger from being accidentally pulled, a lock-off button is provided. To start the tool, press in the lock-off button and pull the switch trigger. Release the switch trigger to stop.
WARNING:
- NEVER use the tool without a fully operative switch trigger. Any tool with an inoperative switch is HIGHLY DANGEROUS and must be repaired before further usage.
- For your safety, this tool is equipped with a lock-off button which prevents the tool from unintended starting. NEVER use the tool if it runs when you simply pull the switch trigger without pressing the lock-off button. Return the tool to a Makita service centre for proper repairs BEFORE further usage.
- NEVER tape down or defeat the purpose and function of the lock-off button.
Electric brake
This tool is equipped with an electric blade brake. If the tool consistently
fails to quickly stop the blade after the switch trigger release, have the
tool serviced at a Makita service centre? The blade brake system is not a
substitute for a blade guard. NEVER USE TOOL WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING BLADE
GUARD. SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY CAN RESULT.
ASSEMBLY
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is
removed before carrying out any work on the tool.
Socket wrench storage
The socket wrench is stored as shown in the figure. When using the socket
wrench, pull it out of the wrench holder. After using the socket wrench,
return it to the wrench holder.

Installing or removing saw blade
CAUTION:
- Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before installing or removing the blade.
- Use only the Makita socket wrench provided to install or remove the blade. Failure to do so may result in overtightening or insufficient tightening of the hex bolt. This could cause an injury.
Lock the handle in the raised position by pushing in the stop-per-pin.
To remove the blade, use the socket wrench to loosen the hex bolt holding the centre cover by turning it counterclockwise. Raise the blade guard and centre cover.

Press the shaft lock to lock the spindle and use the socket wrench to loosen the hex bolt clockwise. Then remove the hex bolt, outer flange and blade.

To install the blade, mount it carefully onto the spindle, making sure that the direction of the arrow on the surface of the blade matches the direction of the arrow on the blade case. Install the outer flange and hex bolt, and then use the socket wrench to tighten the hex bolt (left-handed) securely counter-clockwise while pressing the shaft lock.

Return the blade guard and center cover to its original posi-tion. Then tighten the hex bolt clockwise to secure the center cover. Release the handle from the raised position by pulling the stopper pin. Lower the handle to make sure that the blade guard moves properly. Make sure the shaft lock has released the spindle before cutting.

Dust bag
- The use of the dust bag makes cutting operations clean and dust collection easy. To attach the dust bag, fit it onto the dust nozzle.
- When the dust bag is about half full, remove the dust bag from the tool and pull the fastener out. Empty the dust bag of its contents, tapping it lightly to remove particles adhering to the insides which might hamper further collection.

operations can be performed.
Securing workpiece
WARNING:
- It is extremely important to always secure the workpiece properly and tightly with the vise. Failure to do so can cause the tool to be damaged and/or the workpiece to be destroyed. PERSONAL INJURY MAY ALSO RESULT. Also, after a cutting operation, DO NOT raise the blade until the blade has come to a complete stop. CAUTION:
- When cutting long workpieces, use supports that are as high as the top surface level of the turn base. Do not rely solely on the vertical vice and/or horizontal vice to secure the workpiece.
- This material tends to sag. Support the workpiece over its entire length to avoid blade pinch and possible KICKBACK.

Vertical vise
- The vertical vise can be installed in two positions on either the left or right side of the guide fence or the holder assembly (optional accessory). Insert the vise rod into the hole in the guide fence or the holder assembly and tighten the screw to secure the vise rod.
- Position the vise arm according to the thickness and shape of the workpiece and secure the vise arm by tightening the screw. If the screw to secure the vise arm contacts the guide fence, install the screw on the opposite side of vise arm.
- Make sure that no part of the tool contacts the vise when lowering the handle all the way. If some part contacts the vise, re-position the vise.
- Press the workpiece flat against the guide fence and the turn base. Position the workpiece at the desired cutting position and secure it firmly by tightening the vise knob.

CAUTION:
The workpiece must be secured firmly against the turn base and guide fence
with the vise during all operations.
Horizontal vise (optional accessory)
The horizontal vise can be installed on either the left or right side of the
base. When performing 15° or greater mitre cuts, install the horizontal vise
on the side opposite the direction in which the turn base is to be turned. By
turning the vise knob counterclockwise, the screw is released and the vise
shaft can be moved rapidly in and out. By turning the vise knob clockwise, the
screw remains secured. To grip the workpiece, turn the vise knob gently
clockwise until the projection reaches its topmost position, then fasten it
securely. If the vise knob is forced in or pulled out while being turned
clockwise, the projection may stop at an angle. In this case, turn the vise
knob back counterclockwise until the screw is released, before turning it
again gently clockwise. The maximum width of the workpiece which can be
secured by the horizontal vise is 120 mm (4-3/4”).

CAUTION:
Grip the workpiece only when the projection is at the topmost position.
Failure to do so may result in insufficient securing of the workpiece. This
could cause the workpiece to be thrown, cause damage to the blade or cause the
loss of control, which can result in PERSONAL INJURY.
Holders and holder assembly (optional accessories)
The holders and the holder assembly can be installed on either side as a
convenient means of supporting workpieces horizontally. Install them as shown
in the figure. Then tighten the screws firmly to secure the holders and the
holder assembly.

When cutting long workpieces, use the holder-rod assembly (optional accessory). It consists of two holder assemblies and two rods 12.

CAUTION:
Always support long workpieces level with the top surface of the turn base for
accurate cuts and to prevent dangerous loss of control of the tool.
OPERATION
CAUTION:
- Before use, be sure to release the handle from the lowered position by pulling the stopper pin.
- Make sure the blade is not contacting the workpiece, etc. before the switch is turned on.
- Do not apply excessive pressure on the handle when cutting. Too much force may result in an overload of the motor and/or decreased cutting efficiency. Push down the handle with only as much force as is necessary for smooth cutting and without a significant decrease in blade speed.
- Gently press down the handle to perform the cut. If the handle is pressed down with force or if lateral force is applied, the blade will vibrate and leave a mark (saw mark) in the workpiece and the precision of the cut will be impaired.

Press cutting
Secure the workpiece with the vise. Switch on the tool without the blade making any contact and wait until the blade attains full speed before lowering. Then gently lower the handle to the fully lowered position to cut the workpiece. When the cut is completed, switch off the tool and WAIT UNTIL THE BLADE HAS COME TO A COMPLETE STOP before returning the blade to its fully elevated position. -

Refer to the previously covered “Adjusting the miter angle”. -
Bevel cut
Loosen the lever and tilt the saw blade to set the bevel angle (Refer to the previously covered “Adjusting the bevel angle”). Be sure to retighten the lever firmly to secure the selected bevel angle safely. Secure the work-piece with a vise. Switch on the tool without the blade making any contact and wait until the blade attains full speed. Then gently lower the handle to the fully lowered position while applying pressure in parallel with the blade. When the cut is completed, switch off the tool and WAIT UNTIL THE BLADE HAS COME TO A COMPLETE STOP before returning the blade to its fully elevated position. CAUTION:- Always be sure that the blade will move down to the bevel direction during a bevel cut. Keep hands out of the path of the saw blade.
- During a bevel cut, it may create a condition whereby the piece cut off will come to rest against the side of the blade. If the blade is raised while the blade is still rotating, this piece may be caught by the blade, causing fragments to be scattered which is dangerous. The blade should be raised ONLY after the blade has come to a complete stop.
- When pressing the handle down, apply pressure parallel to the blade. If the pressure is not parallel to the blade during a cut, the angle of the blade might be shifted and the precision of the cut will be impaired.

Compound cutting
Compound cutting is the process in which a bevel angle is made at the same time in which a miter angle is being cut on a workpiece. Compound cutting can be performed at the angle shown in the table.Miter angle| Bevel angle

Cutting crown and cove mouldings
Crown and cove mouldings can be cut on a compound miter saw with the mouldings laid flat on the turn base. There are two common types of crown mouldings and one type of cove moulding; 52/38° wall angle crown moulding, 45° wall angle crown moulding and 45° wall angle cove moulding. See illustrations. -

There are crown and cove moulding joints that are made to fit “Inside” 90° corners ((1) and (2) in Fig. A) and “Outside” 90° corners ((3) and (4) in Fig. A).

Measuring
Measure the wall length and adjust the workpiece on the table to cut the wall
contact edge to the desired length. Always make sure that the cut workpiece
length at the back of the workpiece is the same as the wall length. Adjust the
cut length for the angle of the cut. Always use several pieces for test cuts
to check the saw angles. When cutting crown and cove mouldings, set the bevel
angle and miter angle as indicated in Table (A) and position the mouldings on
the top surface of the saw base as indicated in Table (B).

- Tilt and secure the bevel angle setting to 33.9°LEFT.
- Adjust and secure the miter angle setting to 31.6°RIGHT.
- Lay crown moulding with its broad back (hidden) surface down on the turn base with its CEILING CONTACT EDGE against the guide fence on the saw.
- The finished piece to be used will always be on the LEFT side of the blade after the cut has been made.

Cutting repetitive lengths
When cutting several pieces of stock to the same length, ranging from 220
mm (8-5/8”) to 365 mm (14-3/8”), the use of the set plate (optional accessory)
will facilitate more efficient operation. Install the set plate on the holder
(optional accessory) as shown in the figure. Align the cutting line on your
workpiece with either the left or right side of the groove in the kerf board
and while holding the workpiece from moving, move the set plate flush against
the end of the workpiece. Then secure the set plate with the screw. When the
set plate is not used, loosen the screw and turn the set plate out of the way.

NOTE:
Use of the holder-rod assembly (optional accessory) allows cutting repetitive
lengths up to 2,200 mm (7.2 ft.) approximately.
Carrying tool
Make sure that the battery cartridge is removed. Secure the blade at 0° bevel
angle and the turn base at the right miter angle fully. Lower the handle fully
and lock it in the lowered position by pushing in the stopper pin.
Carry the tool by carrying a grip as shown in the figure. If you remove the holders, dust bags, etc., you can carry the tool more easily.
CAUTION:
- Always secure all moving portions before carrying the tool.
- The stopper pin is for carrying and storage purposes only and not for any cutting operations.
MAINTENANCE
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is
removed before attempting to perform inspection or maintenance.
WARNING:
Always be sure that the blade is sharp and clean for the best and safest
performance.
Adjusting the cutting angle
This tool is carefully adjusted and aligned at the factory, but rough handling
may have affected the alignment. If your tool is not aligned properly, perform
the following:
Miter angle
Loosen the grip which secures the turn base. Turn the turn base so that the pointer points to 0° on the mitre scale. Then turn the turn base slightly clockwise and counterclockwise to seat the turn base in the 0° miter notch. (Leave as it is if the pointer does not point to 0°.) Loosen the hex bolts securing the guide fence using the socket wrench.

Lower the handle fully and lock it in the lowered position by pushing in the stopper pin. Square the side of the blade with the face of the guide fence using a triangular rule, try-square, etc. Then securely tighten the hex bolts on the guide fence in the order from the right side.
Make sure that the pointer points to 0° on the mitre scale. If the pointer does not point to 0°, loosen the screw which secures the pointer and adjust the pointer so that it will point to 0°.

- Lower the handle fully and lock it in the lowered position by pushing in the stopper pin. Loosen the lever at the rear of the tool.
- Turn the 0° bevel angle adjusting bolt (lower bolt) on the right side of the arm two or three revolutions counterclockwise to tilt the blade to the right.

Carefully square the side of the blade with the top surface of the turn base using the triangular rule, try-square, etc. by turning the 0° bevel angle adjust-ing bolt clockwise. Then tighten the lever securely.

Make sure that the pointer on the arm point to 0° on the bevel scale on the arm sub. If it does not point to 0°, loosen the screw which secures the pointer and adjust the pointer so that it will point to 0°.

45° bevel angle
Adjust the 45° bevel angle only after performing 0°bevel angle adjustment.
To adjust the left 45° bevel angle, loosen the lever and tilt the blade to the
left fully. Make sure that the pointer on the arm points to 45° on the bevel
scale on the arm holder. If the pointer does not point to 45°, turn the 45°
bevel angle adjusting bolt (upper bolt) on the right side of the arm until the
pointer points to 45°.
Replacing carbon brushes
Remove and check the carbon brushes regularly. Replace them when they wear
down to the limit mark. Keep the carbon brushes clean and free to slip in the
holders. Both carbon brushes should be replaced at the same time. Use only
identical carbon brushes.
Use a screwdriver to remove the brush holder caps. Take out the worn carbon brushes, insert the new ones and secure the brush holder caps. After replacing the brushes, insert the battery cartridge into the tool and break in the brushes by running the tool with no load for about 1 minute. Then check the tool while running and the electric brake operation when releasing the switch trigger. If the electric brake is not working well, ask your local Makita service centre for repair.

After use
After use, wipe off chips and dust adhering to the tool with a cloth or the
like. Keep the blade guard clean according to the directions in the previously
covered section titled “Blade guard”. Lubricate the sliding portions with
machine oil to prevent rust.
To maintain product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, and any other maintenance or adjustment should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers, always using Makita replacement parts.
