ROD/POLE POCKET DRAPERY MEASUREMENT INSTRUCTIONS

We always recommend using a metal tape to do your measurements.

Measure the width of the area you would like to cover:
Measure your opening from left to right. If your opening has molding please measure from outside molding to outside molding from left to right

Due to the nature of this product if using the rod pocket to slide the rod through we recommend this style be used for draperies that do not need to move across the pole, as the ruching is meant to stay in place. Many customers will order this style to cover the same span as their hardware but use tiebacks to pull the panels to the side. Many of our Rod/Pole Pocket panels can also be used using rings. Please individual product pages for further details

Tips:

  • We recommend whenever possible extending out from the edges of your windows or doors as much as 6″-12″ on each side. This will help make the area look larger, and will also help maintain as much natural light as possible when the drapery is open.
  • If ordering drapery that does not need to close (stationary panels), you can consider ordering a drapery with less coverage while still getting a finished, professional look. Contact our experts for advice or special requests (such as flat panels): cs@halfpricedrapes.com or call 1.866.413.7273.

Determine the Number of Panels Needed

  • For Custom/Made to Measure panels take your measurement and order 2 panels that size for the proper fullness.
  • For Ready Made panels you will take your width measurement and multiply by 2 (for proper fullness). Take that number and divide it by 50 (on average our Ready Made panels are 50” wide) to get the number of panels needed to cover the area. Ifyou get an odd number once divided (170” / 50” = 3.4) we suggest ordering an extra panel (3.4 = 4). By doing this you will then have an even amount of panels on each side of the opening creating a balanced look.

Select Finished Length

  • For Custom/Made to Measure rod/pole pocket drapery panels the length you order includes the 3″ pocket. Keep in mind the hardware type you will be using and where it will be mounted. If using the pocket you will measure from the top of the rod down to the floor. You will want to add in the diameter of the rod you are using to account for take-up (when the fabrics are ruched onto the rod the fabric will gather and “shrink” the length some).
  • For Ready Made rod/pole pocket drapery panels the length you order includes the 3″ pocket. Keep in mind the hardware type you will be using and where it will be mounted. If you will be hanging your panel using rings you will want to measure from the top of the rod down to the floor and then deduct the ring size you will be using. Our Ready Madepanels are generally sold in 84”, 96”, 108” & 120” lengths. You will choose the closest one to the measurement you have.

Tips:

  • Choose a finished length that is long enough so that the drapery may be installed as high above the window/door as you are comfortable with. This will give you a more dramatic finished look and help enhance your ceiling height.
  • Consider a small “puddle” on your drapery. Our decades of experience have taught us that a small “puddle” or “break” of anywhere from 1″-6″ often enhances the finished look. It’s also a great way to disguise uneven floors. Simply add the desired puddle amount to your finished measurement.
  • Please bear in mind that we use some of the finest materials available to create your Custom/Made to Measure draperies. As with all fabrics made of natural fibers, there may be slight changes due to several variables including but not limited to: humidity, temperature, and moisture. This is to be considered normal. If this is a concern, consider ordering a length that includes a small puddle.

PLEATED DRAPERY MEASUREMENT INSTRUCTIONS

We always recommend using a metal tape to do your measurements.

Determine the Number of Panels Needed:

  • For Custom/Made to Measure pleated panels take your measurement, divide by 2, and add 6” for overlap and return (ends of the panels that will overlap when closed and return to the wall on either end). You will order panels that size. Panels will be made using 2 times fullness.
  • For Custom Made pleated panels in the sizes selected off the website, you will take your measurement, divide by 2 and add” for overlap and return (ends of the panels that will overlap when closed and return to the wall on either end). Generally you will be able to order 25” or 50” pleated panels from the website. Take your measurement and divide it by the size(s) selected to determine the proper number of panels to order. If you get an odd number once divided (82” / 25” = 3.2) we suggest ordering an extra panel (3.2 = 4). By doing this you will then have an even amount of panels on each side of the opening creating a balanced look.

Tips:
If you want your draperies to hang completely off the window when opened so as not to block a view, you will want to add more into your width measurement stackback purposes. In general, you will need 33% more width if using a track/traverse rod and about 20% more width if using a decorative pole and rings.

Select Finished Length:

  • For Custom/Made to Measure pleated panels keep in mind the hardware type you will be using and where it will be mounted. If using a decorative pole and rings you will measure from the bottom of the ring to the floor. That measurement will be your finished length. If using a track system measure from the bottom of the track down to the floor. This will be your finished length.

  • Great way to leave attractive woodwork exposed
  • if the window frame isn’t deep enough please select the outside mount

Outside:

  • Great option when there is not enough depth for an inside mount
  • Mounted to the wall, ceiling or molding surface surrounding the window
  • Often used to make the window appear larger or to hide a less attractive window or door
  • No minimum depth requirement

Measure:

Inside:

  • Step 1: Measure the inside width at 3 locations- the top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest of the 3 measurements. This is your ordering width. We will make the necessary deductions (approx. 1/8” -1/2”).
  • Step 2: Measure the height at 3 locations – the left side, Record the largest of the 3 measurements. This is your ordering length.

Outside:

  • Step 1: Measure the width of the area you wish to cover. If space allows we recommend adding 2-3” (1-1 1/2” each side) to this measurement to help eliminate light seepage. This is your ordering width and will be the overall measurement of the shade.
  • Step 2: Measure the height of the area you wish to cover. This is your ordering length.

Control Type:

  • Mounted to the wall, ceiling or molding surface surrounding the window
  • Often used to make the window appear larger or to hide a less attractive window or door
  • No minimum depth requirement
  • Minimum flat surface (on wall, ceiling, or frame) required for secure mount: 3/4″ for standard and top down/bottom up; 1/2″ for continuous loop, deluxe cordless and cordless Top Down/Bottom Up. Be sure to take into account the flat mounting surface area when measuring the area you want to cover with your shade. The factory will make the fabric width of your shade to the width ordered. The headrail width will be 1/4″ wider than the width ordered. The factory will make the height of your shade to the height ordered (including the headrail at the top of your shade).

Measuring for Inside Mount

  • STEP 1: Measure the inside width at 3 locations – the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest of the 3 measurements. This is your ordering width. We will make the necessary deductions (approx. 3/8″ to ½”).
  • STEP 2: Measure the height at 3 locations – the left side, middle, and right side. Record the largest of the 3 measurements. This is your ordering height.

Measuring for Outside Mount

  • STEP 1: Measure the width of the area you wish to cover. If space allows we recommend adding 2-3″ (1-1 1/2″ on each side) to this measurement to help eliminate light seepage. This is your ordering width. The factory will make the fabric width of your shade to the width ordered. The headrail width will be 1/4″ wider than the width ordered.
  • STEP 2: Measure the height of the area you wish to cover. This is your ordering height. Be sure to take into account the flat mounting surface (listed above) needed when measuring the area you want to cover with your shade. The factory will make the height of your shade to the height ordered. Generally 3″ – 4″ added to the height of your opening (including molding or framework you wish to cover) will allow you room to mount above the window frame.
