Installation Instructions
Safety Information
WARNING
Read and understand these instructions before installing the stair nose.
- Follow all the instructions. This will avoid hazards that may result in damage to property and/or severe or fatal injuries.
- The stair nose shall only be installed by persons who have fully read and understand the contents of this installation manual.
- Always refer to your flooring manufacturer’s guidelines for installing the flooring on stairs.
- Always secure the stair nose with both construction adhesive and 6D nails.
- The manufacturer is not liable for cases of material damage or personal injury caused by incorrect handling or noncompliance with the safety instructions.

fitting of the molding. Please note that the manufacturer does not bear
responsibility for any product failures or liabilities resulting from
installations that contravene the original flooring manufacturer’s
installation instructions or warranties.
Intended use
The stair nose is intended to be used to protect and provide a finished edge
to the front of the stair flooring.
The stair nose is intended to be used on floors that are glued down or nailed
into place, as well as on floating floors.
Material
The stair nose is domestically manufactured out of PVC.
Tools and materials needed
To complete the installation, you will need to gather the following
• Tape measure
• Fine tooth blade hack saw
• 60 – 120 grit sanding block
• Premium polyurethane construction adhesive
• Masking tape
• Damp cloth
• Isopropyl alcohol
• Paper towels| • Screwdriver
• Countersunk, flathead, wood screws
• Drill
• 3/64 inch drill bit
• 6D finishing nails
• Hammer
• Weight

Preparation
- Cut away any rounded tread. Make sure the stair riser is flush and square to the stair.
- Measure the width of the stair.
- Cut the stair noise to the desired length using a fine tooth blade hacksaw.
- Scuff the bottom and the lip of the stair nose using a 60-120 grit sanding block.
Choosing how to install the stair nose
The stair nose can be installed utilizing one of two methods: it can be
installed overlapping the flooring, or it can be installed flush with the
flooring.
NOTICE The stair nose can not be installed flush with flooring unless the
flooring is securely affixed either through gluing or nailing down.

Overlapping on secured flooring: Installation
Follow the steps below to install the stair nose via an overlapping method on
secured flooring, either nailed or glued down.

Glue or nail the flooring to the stairs according to your flooring manufacturer’s guidelines.

Make sure the flooring is installed flush with the stair riser.

Scuff the full length of the first 1.5 inch [38 mm] of the flooring using a 60 – 120 grit sanding block.
NOTICE Protect the surrounding area with masking tape. Remove the tape after scuffing is done.

Use a damp cloth to clean the flooring and the stair nose. Make sure both surfaces are dry before proceeding.
WARNING If the surfaces are not clean or dry, the adhesive will not adhere properly, creating a hazardous situation. If necessary gently degrease the flooring and stair nose using a mild solvent like isopropyl alchohol. -
Apply a thick 1.5 inch [38 mm] serpentine bead of premium polyurethane construction adhesive to the bottom of the stair nose.

Align the lip of the stair nose with the stair riser and gently roll the stair nose into its position.

Make any necessary adjustments, make sure the stair nose is properly aligned.
WARNING
Do not walk on the stair nose until the adhesive has fully cured. Check the
adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended full cure time.
Overlapping on floating flooring: Preparation
Follow the steps below to install the stair nose via an overlapping method on
floating flooring.
WARNING
This installation method is only intened to be used on landings.

Make sure there is a 1.375 inch [35 mm] gap between the end of the stair riser and the beginning of the flooring.

Get a 1 inch [25 mm] wide shim that is same thickness of your flooring.

Scuff the full length tread and the bottom of the shim using a 60 – 120 grit sanding block.

Use a damp cloth to clean the stair and the shim. Make sure both surfaces are dry before proceeding.
WARNING If the surfaces are not clean or dry, the adhesive will not adhere properly, creating a hazardous situation. If necessary gently degrease the flooring and stair nose using a mild solvent like isopropyl alchohol. -
Glue the shim flush to the stairs using a premium polyurethane construction adhesive.

Wait for the adhesive to fully cure. Check the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended full cure time.

Drill and countersink the shim to create pilot holes. Space the pilot holes 6 inch [150 mm] out from each other.

Fasten the shim to the stair using countersunk, flathead, wood screws.
Make sure there is at least an 0.5 inch [13 mm] engagment into the subfloor. -
Scuff the top of the shim using a 60 – 120 grit sanding block.
NOTICE Protect the surrounding area with masking tape. Remove the tape after scuffing is done. -
Use a damp cloth to clean the stair nose and the shim. Make sure both surfaces are dry before proceeding.
WARNING If the surfaces are not clean or dry, the adhesive will not adhere properly, creating a hazardous situation. If necessary gently degrease the flooring and stair nose using a mild solvent like isopropyl alchohol. -
Apply a thick 1 inch [25 mm] serpentine bead of premium polyurethane construction adhesive to the front half of the bottom of the stair nose.

Align the lip of the stair nose with the stair riser and gently roll the stair nose into its position.

Flush mount on secured flooring: Installation
Follow the steps below to install the stair nose flush with secured flooring,
either nailed or glued down.

Make sure there is a 1.8 inch [46 mm] gap between the end of the stair riser and the beginning of the flooring.

Glue or nail the flooring to the stairs according to your flooring manufacturer’s guidelines.

Get a shim that is 2mm thinner than your flooring and a minimum of 1.5 inch [38 mm] wide.

Scuff the full length of the exposed tread and the shim using a 60 – 120 grit sanding block.
NOTICE Protect the surrounding area with masking tape. Remove the tape after scuffing is done. -
Use a damp cloth to clean the tread and the shim. Make sure both surfaces are dry before proceeding.
WARNING If the surfaces are not clean or dry, the adhesive will not adhere properly, creating a hazardous situation. If necessary gently degrease the flooring and stair nose using a mild solvent like isopropyl alchohol. -
Glue the shim flush to the stairs using a premium polyurethane construction adhesive.

Wait for the adhesive to fully cure. Check the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended full cure time.

Securing the stair nose to let the adhesive cure
- Firmly press down across the entire length of the stair nose.
- Wipe away any excess adhesive with a paper towel.
- Apply masking tape to hold the stair nose in position. Use weight to apply constant pressure during curing.
WARNING
Do not walk on the stair nose until the adhesive has fully cured. Check the
adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended full cure time.
Securing the stair nose with nails
WARNING
Always secure the stair nose with both premium polyurethane construction
adhesive
and nails. Failure to do so will create a tripping hazard.

Make sure the adhesive has fully cured.

Mark the stair nose where the nails will be attached. Make sure to mark directly above a hard surface for the nail to go into. Space the nails approximately 1 inch [25 mm] away from either end of the stair nose and approximately 12 inch [300 mm] apart from each other.

Drill through the stair nose to the depth of the flooring with a 3/64th inch bit.

Fasten the stair nose to the stairs using 6D finishing nails. WARNING
Make sure the nails are flush with the stair nose, protruding nails cause tripping hazards. -
OPTIONAL Hide the nail holes using color matched color fill.
