Product Usage Instructions

Battery Removal and Installation

  1. Make sure the unit is turned Off.
  2. Find the battery cover located on the back of the unit, use a screwdriver to loosen the screw and then open the battery cover.
  3. Remove old batteries by pulling up on one end of each battery.
  4. Install 3 new AA (AM-3/LR6) batteries following the diagram inside the battery box. (For best performance, alkaline batteries or fully charged Ni-MH rechargeable batteries are recommended.)
  5. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw to secure.

WARNING: Adult assembly required for battery installation. Keep batteries out of reach of children.

LCD Touch Screen Calibration
Occasionally, the LCD touch screen may need to be recalibrated. If this happens, follow these steps:

  1. An X will appear in each corner of the screen and you will hear a voice say, “Tap it!”. Use the stylus to touch each X exactly.
  2. Another X will appear after the previous one is touched correctly.
  3. The screen will show “OK” if the screen has been calibrated correctly.
  4. If an X isn’t touched correctly, you will hear a voice say, “Oops, tap this again,” and the calibration will restart.
  5. You may have to tap an X many times before it is properly calibrated.

Activities

  1. Letter Writing: Use the stylus to choose uppercase or lowercase letters. After making your choice, press a letter button to learn how to write the uppercase or lowercase version of it. Follow the dotted lines. They will show you exactly how to draw perfect letters using the correct stroke order.
  2. Numbers: Same as the activity above but with numbers. Correctly tracing a number transforms it into objects that equal the number’s value. Tap them to count.
  3. Name Writing: Tap an empty name slot to enter a name. A name can hold up to 12 characters. Tap the name to practice spelling it. Tap the edit button to change an existing name.

  • Q: What type of batteries should I use?
    A: For best performance, we recommend using alkaline batteries or fully charged Ni-MH rechargeable batteries.

  • Q: How do I know when the batteries are running low?
    A: When the batteries run low, a low battery indicator icon will appear on the screen, and the unit will power off. Remove the old batteries and replace them with a new set.

  • Q: How do I adjust the contrast of the LCD screen?

WARNING: All packing materials such as tape, plastic sheets, packaging locks, removable tags, cable ties, cords and packaging screws are not part of this toy, and should be discarded for your child’s safety.
NOTE: Please save this Instruction Manual as it contains important information.

Unlock the Packaging Locks

  1. Rotate the packaging locks 90 degrees counterclockwise.
  2. Pull out the packaging locks and discard.

INSTRUCTIONS

Battery Removal and Installation

  1. Make sure the unit is turned Off.
  2. Find the battery cover located on the back of the unit, use a screwdriver to loosen the screw and then open the battery cover.

IMPORTANT: BATTERY INFORMATION

  • Insert batteries with the correct polarity (+ and -).
  • Do not mix old and new batteries.
  • Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or rechargeable batteries.
  • Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to be used.
  • Do not short-circuit the supply terminals.
  • Remove batteries during long periods of non-use.
  • Remove exhausted batteries from the toy.
  • Dispose of batteries safely. Do not dispose of batteries in fire.

RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES

  • Remove rechargeable batteries (if removable) from toy before charging.
  • Rechargeable batteries are only to be charged under adult supervision.
  • Do not charge non-rechargeable batteries.

Low Battery Indicator
When the batteries run low, this icon will appear on the screen and the unit will power off. Remove the old batteries and replace with a new set.

    To save power, Mr. Pencil’s® Scribble, Write & Read™ will shut down after about 1 minute without input. The unit can be turned on again by pressing any button.

ACTIVITIES

  1. Letter Writing
    Use the stylus to choose uppercase or lowercase letters. After making your choice, press a letter button to learn how to write the uppercase or lowercase version of it. Follow the dotted lines. They will show you exactly how to draw perfect letters using the correct stroke order.

  2. Numbers
    Same as the activity above but with numbers. Correctly tracing a number transforms it into objects that equal the number’s value. Tap them to count.

  3. Name Writing
    Tap an empty name slot to enter a name. A name can hold up to 12 characters. Tap the name to practice spelling it. Tap the edit button to change an existing name.

  4. Reading
    Use the stylus to rub away sand to find letters. Find three letters to spell a word. Then, drag the stylus across the letters to sound out the word. Spell and sound out three words to complete the game.

  5. Spelling
    Use the stylus to choose your level.

  6. Level 1: Letterrific!
    Tap the letters as they are announced.

  7. Level 2: Complete the Word
    Drag letters into the words to complete them. Then drag the stylus across the letters to sound out the words.

  8. Level 3: Slide and Spell
    Slide letters into a word to spell it. Then drag the stylus across the letters to sound out the word. When you think you know what the word is, tap the star. Two pictures will appear. Tap the one that shows the word you sounded out.

  9. 6. Drawing
    Use the stylus to choose Free Draw or Tracing.

    • Free Draw
      Get creative! Tap or drag anywhere on the screen to draw. The following icons can help:

    • Eraser – Tap to turn the tip of your stylus into an eraser. Only what you touch will be erased.

    • Pencil – Tap to draw. Tap again to change colors.

    • “X” – Tap this to erase your entire drawing.

    • Music Note – Tap this to add your drawing into the Mr. Pencil® Song.

    • Tracing
      Select a drawing. Then, connect the dots in any order to complete it. Once completed, drawings will animate in silly ways. To automatically complete a drawing, press the check mark.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

  1. Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a slightly damp cloth.
  2. Keep the unit out of direct sunlight and away from any direct heat sources.
  3. Remove the batteries if the unit will not be in use for an extended period of time.
  4. Do not drop the unit on hard surfaces and do not expose the unit to moisture or water.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If for some reason the unit stops working or malfunctions, please follow these steps:

  1. Please turn the unit Off.
  2. Interrupt the power supply by removing the batteries.
  3. Let the unit stand for a few minutes, then replace the batteries.
  4. Turn the unit back On. The unit should now be ready to use again.
  5. If the unit is still not working properly, install a brand new set of batteries.

Environmental Phenomena
The unit may malfunction if subjected to radio-frequency interference. It should revert to normal operation when the interference stops. If not, it may become necessary to turn the power Off and back On, or remove and reinstall the batteries. In the unlikely event of an electrostatic discharge, the unit may malfunction and lose memory, requiring the user to reset the device by removing and reinstalling the batteries.
