Ways to Convert

Supported file types
All file types are compatible with the FM converter tool. However, the file needs to have convertible data (voices) for the tool to convert it. Files without the convertible data would result in an error during conversion.

The most common file types used

  • DXC
    • DXC is a standard FM Voice file format. DXC files may contain Voices originating from DX7 through PLG a series of Plugin boards. They have a “. dxc” file extension.

System Exclusive Dump Files

  • System Exclusive Dump Files contain System Exclusive MIDI data as a binary file. They typically have a “.syx” extension. They should contain the System Exclusive Bulk Dump from the source instrument. Each instrument has its own procedure for performing System Exclusive Bulk Dumps. Please refer to your owner’s manual on how to perform a Bulk Dump. Additionally, you will need some way to capture the bulk dump and turn it into a disk file on your Mac or PC. How best to capture Bulk Dumps in your environment is beyond the scope of this User Guide. Please do an internet search to find the best way for your setup.

How to use the tool for file conversion
The Yamaha FM Converter allows Users to use contents from the DX7, DX7II, TX802 and TX216/816 on your new Montage or MODX.

STEP1
Click the “click here to upload file(s) to convert” option located in the center of the tool to add files to begin the conversion process.

STEP 2:
A file picker dialog box will be displayed.

STEP 3:
Choose the required files for conversion. The files should have convertible data. Users can expand the file selections and view the data inside the files. Choose the order of data that would appear in the converted file. The Users have an option to check and uncheck data based on their preferences. Users can view the convert button after adding the necessary files to the tool.

The order of the files is critical when converting data that includes Performances. It is strongly recommended to adhere to the conversion process guidelines mentioned in the User guide to avoid unpredictable results.

Use the toggle option at the top to check/uncheck all the data files simultaneously.

STEP 4: Use the “Add More” button to add additional files to the tool.

Use the trash icon at the end of the file to remove an individual file or the “Remove all” button to remove all the files from the tool.

STEP 5:
When the User is ready for the conversion procedure to start, click the ‘Convert & Download selected file(s)’ option. When the conversion is successful, a message indicating the download was successful will be displayed.

Possible errors messages:

  1. File extensions of any kind are acceptable, but convertible data must be included.
  2. Atleast one voice data file must be selected for conversion process.
  3. Errors would occur if more than 10 files were added to the tool.
  4. Errors would occur if each file exceeded the maximum size of 1MB.

Conversion process rules

  • Voices
    • The converter will assume the first Voice encountered is Voice #1, the second Voice encountered is Voice#2, etc.
    • If you are not converting Performance or Additional Voice Data, the order does not matter.
  • Performances
    • The converter will assume the first Performance encountered is Performance #1.
  • Additional Voice Data
    • The converter will apply the first Additional Voice data to the first Voice uploaded.
    • You must upload the associated Additional Voice data in the same order as the Voices they apply to.

WARNING: If your conversion includes Performances, you must upload Voice and Performance data in the order above for the resulting Montage Library to sound like the source because Performances only contain numbered references to the Voices that are used in the Performance.

Ex. 1: Performance 1 refers to Voice #1 and Voice #33
If you upload a Voice set with “Horn” as the first Voice, and then another Voice set with “Violin” as the first Voice, the performance will refer to “Horn” as the first part and “Violin” as the second part. If you upload a Voice set with “Violin” as the first Voice, and then another Voice set with “Horn” as the first Voice, the Performance will refer to the “Violin” as the first part and “Horn” as the second part.

Ex. 2: Performance 2 “Piano-Violin” uses Voice #1 and Voice #2
If you upload a Voice with “Piano” as the first Voice, and then “Violin” as the second Voice, the resulting performance will be called “Piano-Violin” that uses the “Piano” and “Violin” Voices. If you upload a completely unrelated Voice such as “Drums” as the first Voice and “Bells” as the second Voice, the resulting Performance will be called “Piano-Violin” which uses the “Drums” and “Bells” Voices.

Loading the Library
