Clearing Vents
Overheating issues can occur if the vents are blocked by dust or hair. Follow these steps to ensure proper airflow:
- Check the vents on your laptop for any blockage.
- If there is any dust or hair, use a can of compressed air or a soft brush to gently clean the vents.
- For models with hidden air vents (such as the UX series), locate the pivot part of the laptop where the air vent is located.
- Note that some minor models (such as the T100 series) may not have a fan and air vent. If this is the case, cleaning is not required.
- If the problem persists, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

Overheating (Fan) issue of ASUS laptop
The fans in the computer help circulate air to maintain a stable and safe
temperature of the internal system. The fan speed will be changed with the
CPU/GPU temperature. The CPU/GPU temperature will be rise, when running huge
and intensive programs, such as heavy-loading games, video editing,
transcoding, and big data operating. Then thermal fan will speed up and let
more cold air pass through the thermal module to achieve the purpose of
cooling. At this time, you may hear the thermal fan spin loudly, especially in
a quiet environment.
Your computer may overheat because of insufficient air flow due to dust, hair, or debris blocking the air vents. If you experience issues of the fan not working, the fan speed is always fast, or the fan noise is obvious loudly, please refer to the troubleshooting in this article.
Note : If the internal system temperature is not higher than the criteria of the fan starts, the fan will not be running.
You might experience the following issues when the laptop overheats:
- Certain applications occupy the CPU / Memory resource
- Dust buildup on the fans
- Unacceptable operating environment
- The fans wear and tear in use over time

If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.
Use Task Manager to check if certain applications occupy the CPU / Memory resource. The CPU/GPU temperature rises when running intensive programs, such as heavy-loading games, video editing, transcoding, and big data operating. Task Manager is a tool to manage applications and processes in the Microsoft Windows system. It allows user to check current processes and provides relevant information about computer performance.
You can use Task Manager to check whether an application is using more of the CPU or Memory resources than expected, here you can learn more about How to use Task Manager to check computer performance and end any malfunctioning processes. If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.
- Make sure the vents aren’t blocked
- Overheat of a laptop usually results from something stuck in the fan and heatsink, such as dust or hair. These oil substances easily absorb and attach dust/hair. If the vents are blocked, it cannot allow fans to remove the heat to perform at its best. If the overheating problem results from stuck dust, you can initially look for assistance from the ASUS customer & service center.
- Please do not clean the interior by using the device with strong air, such as an air boost compressor. We have a real case that the fan is damaged by a strong airwave. If you need to clean by yourself, we suggest that you use the Air compressor at a distance from the spray. Do not use the air boost compressor in an up-side-down position.
- Note : Ensure the laptop is off and remove the adapter if you need to clean by yourself.
- The air vent is usually located on two sides of the laptop.
- The design of the air vent for some models of the notebook is a hidden style (such as the UX series). The air vent is not on the two sides of the laptop but at the pivot part of the laptop (shown in red in the below image).
Note : Some minor models (such as the T100 series) are not suggested to be cleaned by the above instruction because their radiation is lower without a fan and air vent and it’s radiated by case. If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.
Recommended environment for proper airflow
- Make sure the fans on your laptop can ventilate properly. Use an ASUS laptop where the ambient temperature is between 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). (Refer to the user guide instructions regarding safety precautions)
- Use your device on a hard, flat surface (like a table or desk) rather than a soft surface (like a couch, pillow, bed, or your lap).
- Provide a distance of clearance around each vent.
- Consider using a laptop cooling pad to help provide better airflow to the bottom vents.
- If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.
Run Fan hardware diagnostic via MyASUS
You can inspect whether the hardware device is good by the Hardware Diagnostic
via MyASUS. If any error occurs after diagnosis, we recommend that you visit
the ASUS repair center to replace the hardware device.
- Type and search [MyASUS] in the Windows search bar①, then click [Open]②. If there is no result searched that means your computer may not install it, and please refer to How to install MyASUS.

Note : If there is no System Diagnosis tab in MyASUS that means your computer does not support this function, here you can learn more about Why can I only see the “Customer Support” feature in the MyASUS app.
If any error occurs, please visit the ASUS repair center to replace the hardware device. Here you can learn more about How to use Customer Support to contact ASUS for further repair requests. If no issue is found after the “Hardware diagnostic” check, it means your hardware devices are good.
Q & A:
Why is the fan running even if my computer enters sleep mode?
CPU/GPU is still working even if the system is in sleep mode, then the fans
spin to achieve the purpose of cooling while the internal system temperature
is over the standard. If you would like to turn off the fans, you can let the
computer enter hibernate mode. The CPU/GPU doesn’t activate in hibernate mode.
Here you can learn more about Three ways to turn the computer off – Shut down
, Sleep, and Hibernate.
If you use third-party apps that measure the temperature of your notebook computer, it’s important to understand that they don’t measure the external case temperature. The case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party apps to diagnose possible hardware issues.
If your problem cannot be solved, please contact ASUS customer & service center for further information.
