HILTI CP 617 Firestop Putty Pad
Installation of Hilti CP 617 Firestop Putty Pads must be executed according to
the tested UL systems and Hilti’s Instructions for Use (IFU) to ensure the
product will achieve its tested performance in case of fire. Hilti CP 617
putty pads are to be installed in accordance with the Wall Opening Protect
Materials document (CLIV, CLIV7) as listed by UL.
The information below is meant to support the Hilti CP 617 Firestop Putty Pads
Operating instructions.
Actions before
- Ensure appropriate 23°F/-5°C to 104°F/40°C storage temperatures as stated on the product label and application temperatures of 32°F/0°C to 104°F/40°C
- Use clean and suitable gloves free of dust and fibers
- Source the right pad size for the correct electrical box size, see section at the end of this document
Step 1:
Clean the boxes appropriately
Metal or plastic surfaces of the boxes as well as adjacent adhesion areas
(studs, channels or support members) need to be thoroughly clean of dust,
debris, moisture, oils or solvents.
Step 2:
Apply after peeling off the silicone paper
After removing paper backing, avoid contaminating the putty surface before
application (i.e. keep away from dust, debris, fibers, oils, etc.) to ensure
proper adhesion between the pad and surfaces. Do not stretch the pad!
Step 3:
Wrap around all sides of the box
CP 617 putty pad needs to be applied to all sides of the electrical outlet box
and lap min 1/2” onto the surrounding areas (like wood or steel studs) in
accordance with the UL / CLIV listing. We recommend to start the installation
from the bottom up.
Step 4:
Firmly press the pad to all surfaces of the box, channels/brackets and
ensure appropriate overlap
If the pad does not fit an electrical outlet box, a larger pad size should be
sourced. If installation requires more than one pad to be used, the pads can
be adjoined together with an overlapping area of min 1/2” – this area should
be firmly pressed to ensure proper adhesion of pads to each other and the
electrical outlet box. This is crucial for its performance (fire, acoustics,
etc.) Step 5:
Avoid any air pockets or spanning the pad over gaps
CP 617 needs to be applied with firm pressure to ensure proper adhesion over
the entire surface, removing any air pockets; CP 617 should be applied
following the surface of the electrical box and any channel across the back,
ensuring the surface of the channel is fully engaged. The CP 617 cannot be
installed by spanning the channel.
How to select the right size of Putty Pads
Measure the height of the box (x) and add twice the depth of the box (y), plus
1” for overlapping (i.e. ½” on both sides). If the result is less than 6” =>
use CP617 6×7 (# 309760). If the result is more than 6” but less than 7”, use
CP617 7×7 (# 333583). If the result is more than 7” but less than 9”, use
CP617 9×9 (# 373387).
Note: Measure on the outside of the box and potential extensions
