EN397 Industrial Safety Helmet

EN397:2012/ INDUSTRIAL SAFETY HELMET
EN50365:2002/ ELECTRICALLY INSULATED HELMET
FOR USE ON LOW VOLTAGE INSTALLATIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION

WARNING: This industrial helmet is intended to protect the user against falling objects and electrical shocks. The helmet covered by these instructions is classified as Category III Personal Protective Equipment and, as such, has been subject to an EU type-examination procedure in line with the requirements of Annexes V and VI of EU Regulation 2016/425. The EC approval procedure was conducted by notified body no. 2777, SATRA Technology Europe Ltd, Bracetown Business Park, Clonee, Dublin 15, Dublin, Ireland. This helmet complies with the following standards:
– EN 397+A1 (February 2013), only if the chinstrap has an EN 397 label, or if the helmet is used without a chinstrap
– EN 50365:2002
– EN 12492, only if the chinstrap has an EN 12492 label, available as accessory. Warning: Ventilation requirement in EN 12492 is not fulfilled.
The helmet also complies with the following optional requirements of EN 397: Very low temperature -20 °C, resistance to lateral deformation and electrical insulation (models without vents only). The electrically insulated version of Zone is considered to be type
3 PPE: Conformity to type, module C2, Notified Body No. 2777 , SATRA Technology Europe Ltd, Bracetown Business Park, Clonee, Dublin 15, Dublin, Ireland.
This electrically insulating helmet cannot be used alone, it is necessary to use other insulating protective equipment according to the risks involved in the work. Before use, the user shall check that the chinstrap is suitable for the work to be done. You are responsible for your actions, your decisions and your safety and you assume the consequences thereof. If you are unable or not in a position to assume this responsibility, or if you do not fully understand the instructions for use, do not use this equipment. This helmet offers the best possible head protection but it is not indestructible and the risk of injury in the event of an accident cannot be excluded. No helmet can offer total protection in all accidents. The helmet is made to absorb the energy of a blow by partial destruction or damage to the shell and the harness, and even though such damage may not be readily apparent, any helmet subject to severe impact should be replaced. This helmet is designed for head protection and may not prevent injuries to the neck, spine or the rest of the body in the event of an accident. This helmet must strictly be used only for the activity for which it has been approved (see marking). Insulating helmets should not be used in situations where there is a risk that may partially reduce their insulating properties. Please read this guide carefully before using your helmet to familiarize yourself with the helmet’s features, care instructions and conditions of use. Keep this guide in a safe place throughout the helmet’s lifetime and be sure to check the helmet’s fit before each use. For optimum protection, please follow these instructions:

ADJUSTING THE HEADBAND

For adequate protection this helmet must fit or be adjusted to the size of the user’s head. Position the helmet so that it sits level and snugly on your head. It must not be too low on the forehead to avoid obstructing peripheral vision, nor too low at the nape of the
neck in order to protect the forehead (see figure 1).
Helmets with a wheel can be adjusted at the headband. Turn the wheel to adjust the inside diameter of your helmet to the diameter of your head (see figure 2). To make sure that your helmet is properly adjusted, shake your head. Your helmet should not move about in any direction (see figure 2).
Set the headband at the front to one of three vertical positions.
On the sides, at the headband joint near the hearing protector slots, the two parts can be unclipped and repositioned (two possible positions) to increase or reduce the headband circumference.
The headband can then be adjusted vertically at the rear to position the helmet perfectly. There are three positions: a storage position to prevent damage to the adjustment wheel and two working positions (see figure below). The storage position should not be used when wearing the helmet.

ADJUSTING THE CHINSTRAP

When wearing the helmet for the first time, adjust the straps so that they fit snugly below the ears. Adjust the slider buckles so that the straps form a “Y” under your earlobe (see figure 1), without covering it. If hearing protectors are used the straps should be adjusted to avoid leakage under the cups. The strap should go under your jaw, against your throat. The buckle should not rest on your jaw. The strap should then be adjusted so that it is neither too tight nor too loose. To check that the straps are properly adjusted, put the helmet on and fasten the buckle. Open your mouth. You should feel the strap straining slightly against your throat.
Now try pulling the helmet from the front or the back. It should not move. If the helmet comes off, tighten the straps and check that the foam pads you have used are thick enough. The helmet should not rock back and forth excessively (see figures 3 and 4).

CHANGING THE CHINSTRAP

The user must carry out a preliminary risk analysis to choose the appropriate chinstrap. To change the chinstrap, release the four clips on the chinstrap already fitted to the helmet by pressing the tabs protruding from the clip anchor.
Lay the required strap flat and arrange it in a cross (see figure 6) so that you can identify the front and rear clips (F and B on the clips denote “Front” and “Back”).
Fasten the rear clips: the left rear clip is marked B-L and the right one B-R. Then fasten the two front clips, making sure that the straps are not twisted.
Before use, check that all clips are correctly fastened to the anchors. Then adjust the chinstrap as indicated in the previous section (see figure 5).

CHECKS

In addition to the normal visual check to be performed before each use, a qualified inspector must fully examine the helmet at least once a year. Each inspection must be noted on a logbook, with detailed references including the type, model, manufacturer’s information, lot or serial number, purchase date, expiry date, date of first use, inspection date and any remarks. Never remove labels or symbols, and check they are readable. If you notice any nicks, abrasion marks or other damage (mechanical or chemical), helmet should not be used. If in doubt the helmet shall be destroyed.

CARE

If the helmet becomes dirty or contaminated (oil, tar, paint etc.), particularly the external surface, it should be carefully cleaned on the outside. The inner foam pads are removable and hand washable (in warm water with solvent-free cleaning products). This also
applies to the visor. To clean, maintain or disinfect the helmet, only use substances that will not damage the helmet and that have no known harmful effects on the wearer when applied as per the manufacturer’s instructions and information given in this guide. The attention of users is also drawn to the danger of modifying or removing any of the original component parts of the helmet, other than as recommended by the helmet manufacturer.
Helmets should not be adapted for the purpose of fitting attachments in any way not recommended by the helmet manufacturer.
Use only warm water and mild soap. Never use solvents, flammable products (alcohol, etc.), other cleaners, chemicals or abrasives.
If possible, repairs should only be carried out by the manufacturer or by a skilled person expressly authorized by the manufacturer, in accordance with applicable procedures.

TRANSPORT/STORAGE

The helmet should be kept in a dry place. It should never be exposed to temperatures above 50°C or below -30°C as this would cause it to lose its protective properties. For example, never leave it in a car exposed to the sun or near a heat source.
If this happens, discard your helmet because it may be damaged even if it is not visible. Do not apply paint, solvents, adhesives or self-adhesive labels, except in accordance with instructions from the helmet manufacturer. Such materials could affect the stability and effectiveness of the helmet’s protection. Never modify the helmet or use it for anything other than its intended purpose. Use only genuine spare parts. In case of impact, regardless of whether the helmet is being worn or not at the time, it must be discarded even if no damage is apparent.
For optimum storage, make sure the helmet is completely dry and store it in its original packaging in a well-ventilated room at ambient temperature and no direct exposure to sunlight. Where a protective cover is supplied by the manufacturer, this can also be used. Do not expose the helmet to chemically aggressive substances, persistent dust or dirt, or salty environments. During transportation, avoid compression, exposure to direct sunlight and contact with sharp objects.

ACCESSORIES

For transportation, use the protective cover if provided or, where this is not the case, use packaging that preserves the integrity of the product. No original component of the helmet shall be changed, replaced and/or removed unless expressly authorized by the manufacturer. Use only genuine spare parts. The helmet must not be modified to add any accessories other than those described below. If in doubt, contact your dealer or the manufacturer directly. Only use this electrically insulating helmet in combination with other compatible PPE and check if the helmet class is suitable for the nominal voltage.
Compatible accessories: Attachment adapters for visor and visor cover, Reflective labels, Helmet cover, Neck protection, Hearing protection, Eye protection visor (EN 166), Face shield (EN 166), Plastic mesh visor (EN 1731), Metal mesh visor (EN 1731), Replacement lining, Lamp, Clips.
Check with your dealer or manufacturer to see if the accessories listed above are available. For installation and use, follow the instructions provided with the accessory.

LIFETIME

This helmet has a limited lifetime, regardless of the optional requirements claimed, and must be replaced as soon as the first signs of wear appear, impact has occurred or if it no longer fits. Please check your helmet at regular intervals for any visible damage. We advise you to replace your helmet ten years after the production date printed on the helmet label.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable for any direct or indirect damage. The warranty will not apply if the helmet has not been used as instructed. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear. The warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, negligence, mistreatment, incorrect adjustment, or any use not recommended by the manufacturer. Any alterations made by the user will void the warranty. The warranty does not cover damage resulting from exposure of the helmet to excessive temperatures.
