Option One: Best

Note: If you are mounting the Farkle Shelf to a one piece windshield; do step 4 while the shield is still on the bike and find the “best ft” location for the shelf where it is at the height you want and where the mounting tabs on the Shelf ft closest to the windshield. Then proceed to step 1.

  1. Remove the Mindbender Base shield, or other windshield, from your bike following the instructions in your service manual.

  2. Lay a large, clean, soft cloth (a bath towel works great) fat on your workbench.

  3. Lay the removed shield front down on the towel (the part you look at while on the bike will be face up).

  4. To avoid scratching the shield with your new Farkle Shelf, cover the inside of the shield with masking tape (recommended minimum tape coverage is two inches on either side, above and below, the approximate location of the Farkle Shelf mounting tab locations). Also, cover the inside center of the shield with tape and make a mark at the center, one inch down from the top of the base shield. This will be the alignment point for the top center of the Farkle Shelf. (While other vertical locations will work, the tabs on the shelf are designed to ft best with the top of the shelf exactly one inch from the top of the Mindbender base shield).

  5. Place the top center of the Farkle Shelf on the center mark you made on the inside of the windshield.
You may want to get out your large set of squeeze clamps for the next step. You will also want to have your pencil or Sharpie at hand.

  6. Using a tape measure or ruler, (or your best guess the feeling in your fingers is really a pretty darn good gauge!); center the Farkle Shelf on the shield right to left and locate it parallel to the bottom of the shield. THE MOUNTING TABS SHOULD BE RESTING ON THE MASKING TAPE YOU LAID DOWN A FEW MINUTES AGO. While holding the Farkle Shelf firmly against the windshield, mark each of the six mounting holes completely by “fling in the dot”. This will leave six ¼’ dots on the masking tape you stuck on the shield.
You may want to use those squeeze clamps at this point to hold the outer tabs in place while you mark the holes.

  7. Remove the clamps if you used them and set the Farkle Shelf aside.

  8. Using a ¼” wood spade bit (twist bits will work, but can ship the acrylic a step drill works too, but is harder to center because the point is not as sharp). A spade bit: the best thing I have found for doing this; will make a nice clean hole in the acrylic; and has a very sharp point that will allow you to center the bit on your marks without drilling a pilot hole. Do not attempt to use a center punch 😉

  9. Remove the tape from your windshield and clean up any residue.

  10. On two of the 1″ 1/4-20 stainless steel machine screws provided place a powder-coated 12ga washer then one round rubber cushion. The rubber cushion is a snug ft and will hold the washers in place. Do the same thing with the remaining four screws, two 12ga backing plates and two long rubber cushions.

  11. Carefully support the shield and, one set at a time, insert the preassembled screws into the corresponding mounting holes from the front of the shield. Slide the remaining rubber cushions onto the bolts from the inside of the shield to hold all the screws in place.

  12. Lay the shield back on your towel front side down and slide your Farkle Shelf onto the protruding screws. Place one ¼” stainless steel fat washer on each of the six screws protruding through the Farkle Plate mounting tabs then attach one stainless steel lock nut to each screw as far as you can by hand. Your Farkle Shelf will now not be able to slide around and scratch your shield. Hold the screws in place with a Phillips screwdriver and turn the nuts with a wrench or socket until the screw threads pass the nylon in the nut and are just past fish with the top of the nuts. These screws and nuts ONLY NEED TO BE SNUG DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THEM.
Note: if you are using a 1/8″ thick Windshield, the screw threads should protrude approximately 1/16″ past the top of the nut.

  13. Put the windshield back on your bike with the Farkle Shelf installed, or if you are a glutton for punishment, take the Farkle Shelf off the shield before reinstalling the shield, reinstall the shield, then reinstall the Farkle Shelf.

Note: if you are not using a two-piece windshield (Mindbender) you may want to install all of your Farkle on the Shelf before you attach the shelf to the shield because your windshield may be in the way of drilling holes in the shelf. Of course, you will have to test ft all your Farkle for clearance before you drill any holes in the Farkle Shelf just something to think about. . . if you haven’t already.

Option Two: more difficult

Feel free to leave your windshield on the bike. It will be more difficult to locate and hold the Farkle Shelf in place and drilling your holes may not be as accurate (it won’t hurt anything if you need to drill 5/16″ holes or even 3/8″ if you really miss ;-). You will want to either have a friend help you hold the Farkle shelf in place or get out those large squeeze clamps. You will have to mark the holes on the inside of the shield and drill them from the front. Shining a light on our ¼” black dots from the back will help you see your marks through the shield and masking tape.
Note: If you use this method BE CAREFUL NOTE TO RUN THE DRILL BIT INTO YOUR DASH!!!!

WARNING: While our Farkle Shelf is “bounce free” when mounted properly, we don’t recommend
hanging heavy gadgets beyond the back edge of the shelf. Leverage from items hanging beyond the back edge can potentially cause the shelf and windshield to bounce on rough roads.
HAVE FUN FARKLEIZING!!!
