GET TO KNOW MORTY
The Morty Loose Tenon Joinery Jig uses a combination of features to help you
create the perfect mortise. The Template Carrier allows you to place the
mortise anywhere on a piece of stock up to 3-1/2″ wide. You can also rotate
the template a full 360° to cut a mortise at any angle. Lock in your material
with the 4-1 /2″ wide Clamp Bar by simply turning the Clamp Knob. Use
crosshairs or one of three different indexing methods to locate your mortise
exactly where you need it! Get familiar with Morty by referencing FIGURE A.
GUIDE BUSHINGS FIGURE B. Morty Guide Bushing/ Bit Chart
MORTY MORTY ROUTER Morty uses different combinations of Guide Bushings and
router bits to make 7 different standard mortises for loose tenons. To find
out which Guide Bushing ⑤ ⑥ ⑦ or ⑧ and router bit to use for your desired
mortise, refer to the chart. FIGURE B.

MANDREL CENTERING
To get accurate results using
Morty, your router bit MUST be perfectly centered inside the Guide Bushing.
Follow the Mandrel Centering instructions carefully and DO NOT SKIP THIS
STEP.
NOTE: You must have a 1 /4″ collet installed in your router at this time.
-
Insert the threaded ends of your desired Guide Bushing (A, B C or D) into the base plate of your router. FIGURE C.
-
Secure the Guide Bushing on the underside with the Guide Bushing Locking Ring ⑨· FIGURE D.
-
Install the Centering Pin ⑪ into the 1/4″ collet of your router.
-
Loosen the screws that secure the baseplate or template holder of your router.
-
Place the narrow end of the Centering Cone ⑫ on the Centering
Pin. Push down until the Centering Cone evenly bottoms out on the Guide Bushing. FIGURE E -
Maintain pressure and tighten the screws to secure your baseplate or template holder. FIGURE F.
-
Remove the Centering Cone and Centering Pin. Install your desired router bit. Your bit is now perfectly centered in the Guide Bushing and is ready to be used with Morty.
MAKING A MORTISE-FUNDAMENTALS
A. HOW TO MARK OUT YOUR MORTISE LOCATION
-
Draw a crosshair on the centerlines of your desired mortise location on your workpiece. FIGURE G.
-
Set the angle – typically either 0° or 90°, the Template can rotate a full 360°. To adjust the Template angle, use the Adjustment Wrench to loosen the Lock Knob. Then insert the Template Adjusting Key ⑩ into the Template center. Rotate the Template Adjusting Key until the Center Index Marks align with your desired angle. Lock the Template in place by tightening the Lock Knob with the Adjustment Wrench. FIGURE H & H-1.
-
To position the Morty at the mortise location, line up the engraved Center Index Marks inside the Template with the crosshairs on the workpiece.
FIGURE I- 1. To move the Template Carrier across the width of the stock, use the provided Adjustment Wrench @to loosen and secure the two Lock Knobs on the ends of the Template Carrier, align to your crosshairs and re-lock. FIGURE I.
B. SETTING ROUTER BIT DEPTH OF CUT
-
Position your router upside down on your work surface with the desired router bit installed and facing up.
-
Place the Morty upside down on your router so the bit protrudes up through the Template. FIGURE J.
-
Set your workpiece on the Template Carrier with a pencil mark indicating how deep you would like your mortise.
-
Plunge the router until the bit is in line with your pencil mark. Set the depth stop on your router to limit the depth of cut to your desired mark.
CLAMPING MORTY AND THE WORKPIECE
Position your workpiece between the Fence and the Clamp Bar and then turn the
Clamp Knob clockwise to secure the wood. FIGURE K.
NOTE: Morty can hold stock up to 3-1 /2″ wide.
Morty is best used in tandem with a woodworking vise. With your workpiece clamped in the Morty, flip it over and use a vise to clamp the wood so Morty and the stock are both stationary.
D. MORTISE ROUTING TECHNIQUE
- To achieve the best results, you will need to make multiple passes to create your mortise. Limit the depth of cut for each pass to the diameter of the router bit being used.
- For example, if you are cutting a 4mm mortise you will be using an 1 /8″ router bit. Refer to Figure B on page 2.
- The maximum depth of cut per pass should not exceed 1 /8″ in depth.
- Vacuum out the wood chips between passes.
- On the final pass ensure that the Guide Bushing rides along the entire perimeter of the Template.
- Then vacuum out the mortise and inspect it to ensure a properly milled mortise.
INDEXING REFERENCE POINTS
In addition to aligning to crosshairs, Morty has three indexing methods.
A. METHOD 1 INDEX PINS
On the inside face of the template carrier, you will find 3 perfectly
symmetrical positions on “A” side and “B” side to thread in the two provided
index pins. For simple right-angle joints, you can use these indexing points
to reference the stock instead of drawing crosshairs and manual aligning your
workpiece. When not in use, the two index pins can be stored on-board by
threading them into the back of the Clamping Guide Rods. FIGURE L.
HOW TO CREATE A SIMPLE RIGHT-ANGLE JOINT WITH INDEX PINS.
Begin by aligning the two pieces as they will be joined. Mark the top surface
with a triangle that overlaps the joint as shown. FIGURE M.
Flip Morty upside down.
Position piece #1 so the face with the mark is registering up against the
Fence, and the opening of the triangle is against the Template. FIGURE N.
Register the outside edge against the Index Pin on the “B” side. Use the Index
Pin positions that locates the mortise closest to the center of your material.
Clamp the board in place and rout your mortise. FIGURE O.
For the mating piece move the Index Pin to the corresponding location on the “N.’ side. FIGURE P.
As with the first mortise, align your board so the face with the mark is
against the fence, and the opening of the triangle is against the Template.
FIGURE Q.
Press the end of the board against the Index Pin and clamp your board in
place. FIGURE R.
Rout out your mortise. You should now have a perfect right-angle joint with a
flush face and end. FIGURES S & T

METHOD 2. To position your indexing reference further away outside of the Template carrier , thread the 11.5″ Stop Rod ② into one of the two Lock Knobs.
Add the Flip Stop ④ by sliding it onto the Stop Rod. Lock it in position by tightening the brass knob on the Flip Stop. FIGURE U.
-
METHOD 3. To position your reference anywhere inside the Template carrier other than the three fixed Index Pin positions, thread the 6.9″ Stop Rod CD onto the Flip Stop.
Slide the Stop Rod to your desired location and lock it in place by tightening the brass knob on the Flip Stop. FIGURE V.
CREATING AN OVER-SIZED MORTISE WITH THE 3-STEP FLIP STOP
-
Start by aligning the Template with the crosshairs of your desired mortise location. Once in place, clamp your work piece to secure the position.
-
Install the 11.5″ Stop Rod and slide on the Flip Stop.
-
Flip the two outer Flags up and out of the way. Slide the Flip Stop over so that the Center Flag is coming in contact with the end of the workpiece, and tighten the Flip Stop in place. FIGURE W.
NOTE: The Center Flag must be referenced first when aligning your jig. This way your mortise can be expanded either to the left, right, or in both directions to create a larger mortise . -
Route out your mortise.
-
Flip the Center Flag up and out of the way.
-
Flip the Left Flag down. Un-clamp your workpiece and slide it until it comes in contact with the Left Flag. FIGURE X
