How To Get the Most Out of Your T-Slot Router Bit
- Cutting T-Slots requires a straightedge to guide your router or a router table with a fence. Do not attempt to use any T-Slot Bit freehand. If using a straight-edge guide, secure the workpiece to your workbench and the straight-edge to your workpiece.
- Use a 1-1/2 HP or larger router at a high speed setting.
- Set the projection of the router bit carefully to obtain the desired depth of cut. Make test cuts in scrap material to confirm depth settings.
- Work with the straight edge on the opposite side of the groove from where vou’re standing and slowly move the router from left to right. Direct some pressure toward the straight-edge as you move the router along its path.
- If working on a router table, always confirm that you are feeding the material into the rotation of the router bit… typically right to left.

- If the slot packs with shavings, move the router back toward the starting point a short distance to help clear the slot.

NOTES:
- If your router struggles with the cut or you’re having difficulty controlling the router, rout a straight clearance slot slightly narrower and shallower than the finished T-slot.
- Evacuating the chips as they’re made speeds up the process significantly. Use dust extraction if at all possible.
