Congratulations! You are the owner of the unique Chia Pet® & Herb Planter, the only planter so versatile that it can be used as a traditional planter or grown as a Chia Pet. Included in this kit is the Willie Nelson Chia Pet® & Herb planter, Chia growing medium, chia seed packet, two varieties of herb seeds and drip tray.

Product Information

The Chia Planter is a versatile product that can be used as a traditional planter, a starter planter for seeds, or as a Chia Pet. It is made from natural terracotta and may have slight variations in clay or hand-applied paint, which adds to its uniqueness. The planter comes with herb seeds and Chia seeds included.

HOW TO USE

You choose how you want your planter to be used:

  • a. As a traditional planter for your favorite plant or as a starter planter for seeds (herb seeds enclosed) or rooted seedlings.
  • b. As a Chia Pet (Chia Seeds enclosed).
  • c. As a combination traditional planter and Chia Pet

As a Chia Pet

  1. Soak your Chia Planter in water for half an hour.

  2. In a separate container, mix 1 teaspoon of chia seeds with 1 tablespoon water. Stir mixture occasionally for half an hour to form a gel-like paste which will help seeds adhere to your chia planter.

  3. Empty the water from the planter. Place the planter in the drip tray provided. Using a small knife, spoon or your fingers, spread a thin, even layer of chia seeds on the grooved surface of your planter. You may not need to use all of the seed mixture.

  4. Don’t water your planter for 2 days. This allows the seeds to adhere to the planter so they won’t slide off. Don’t worry if the Chia seeds are dry, they will start to sprout once you add water. After 2 days, fill your Chia planter with water through the watering hole on top of Willie Nelson’s head.

  5. Top off the water in your planter with fresh water and empty the drip tray daily.
Optional: Place a plastic bag loosely over the chia planter for a few days until the seeds sprout or mist your planter daily to moisten the seeds. The bag should not be sealed and should be big enough that it does not touch the seeds on the chia pet.

  6. When the growth appears leggy or overgrown, it is time to remove the old growth. Chia planters should be washed and can be replanted indefinitely.

As a Traditional Planter

  1. To grow seeds in the planter, place the chia growing wafers provided into a leak proof container and add 3/4 cup of water to hydrate. Fluff up mixture and scoop into planter. (there may be some growing medium left over). Place planter in drip tray provided. Sprinkle a few seeds (basil or parsley) on top of the growing medium. Water as needed to keep the growing medium moist. As the seedlings grow, remove all but two or three of the healthiest plants. It is best to cut them out with scissors rather than pulling them out of the soil to avoid damaging the roots of the remaining seedlings.
  2. You can use your own plants or seedlings in the planter, add the growing medium to replace any or all of the existing soil.

As a Chia Pet and Traditional Planter
For a really unique look you can use your planter to grow both Chia on the head of your Willie Nelson planter, and grow herbs or your favorite plant in the bowl planter area.

PLEASE NOTE: Remove the plug on the bottom of your planter to allow drainage of excess water. The plug can be left in place if you want your planter to hold water(not recommended for included herb seeds). A plastic drip tray is included.

Each Chia Pet is made from natural terracotta and variations may be present in the clay or hand-applied paint. These small differences do not affect the function of your Chia Pet and only enhance its uniqueness!
