(commonly referred to as de-ionizing resin).
Introduction
Thank you for choosing HydroPower Ultra for your pure water needs. You have
chosen a high quality product backed by Unger’s 100% customer satisfaction
guarantee. When used as intended, the unit will produce zero TDS pure water
for site glass cleaning.
The production of pure water, through deionization, is based on the principal
of ion exchange.
In this process, the minerals responsible for producing spotting are removed
from the water.
The use of HydroPower Ultra has the following advantages:
- With a waterfed wash pole and brush will effectively clean glass and other surfaces without the need for chemicals.
- Run-off does not have to be remediated, and is safe for plants and animals.
- No electricity or external power supply needed – system works with plumbing line pressure.
- Resin packs are factory filled with the precise amount of mixed bed DI Resin for optimum system performance. As with any commercial equipment, care must be taken when operating and servicing the unit. There is a risk of damage to the system due to:
- Operating and installation errors.
- Use of loose resin (overfill and expansion of resin will damage unit).
- Vessel is opened incorrectly.
- Using non-Unger spare parts.
- Performing unauthorized modification to unit.
- Insufficient maintenance.
Use only original spare parts by Unger (according to spare parts list, pg.
13).
For all inquiries and spare parts orders, it is important to provide detailed
information located on the device (serial and/or part number).

2.4 General hazards
Read and follow ANSI Standard IWCA 1-14.1 (Window Cleaning Safety).
Purified water is delivered to the waterfed pole by hoses from the HydroPower
Ultra system.
This introduces a risk of tripping both to worker and general public. Identify
work area with appropriate signage.
Any surface that becomes wet must be identified with appropriate signage to
direct pedestrians and workers away from work area. During wintertime, it is
important to avoid water pooling, which could freeze, creating a dangerous
slip hazard.

System Overview
3. System Overview
3.1 What is Pure Water?
Pure Water is water in its purest form, physically processed to remove the
minerals that would otherwise lead to limescale spots and streaks. Such
impurities are referred to as TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and are measured in
ppm (parts per million). Water is considered 100% demineralized (pure) when
its TDS is measured at 0 ppm. The average TDS of drinking water is 180 ppm.

Startup
4.2 Startup
-
LOCATE JOBSITE WATER SUPPLY
Unger recommends testing the on‐site water supply for TDS (total dissolved solids) prior to working. Higher TDS levels reduce the system’s capacity.
• Inspect system – ensure Unger‘s Ultra Resin Packs are properly installed: the red Resin
Pack is only used on a large tank unit and placed in the middle and bottom position.
The green Resin Pack is used in all units and is placed in the top position.
NOTE: The performance of HydroPower Ultra is optimized when used with Ultra Resin Packs.
NEVER use loose resin as it may damage the system.
• Set up system in upright position.
• Choose a stable on‐site location. -
CONNECT WATERFED WASH POLE TUBING
• Attach waterfed wash pole hose onto Water OUT connection (fig. A).
• Ensure all on/off valves are in “OPEN” position when filling system. -
CONNECT WATER SUPPLY (GARDEN HOSE) TO WATER IN CONNECTION
• Thread On/Off Valve to garden hose prior to connecting water supply (fig. B).
• Attach On/Off Valve directly onto Water IN connection at base of unit (fig. C). -
TURN ON FEED WATER SUPPLY
• When water begins to flow out of the unit, turn on TDS meter and inspect pure water quality (fig. D). A reading of ‘0’ is best and indicates the system is running properly.
When the TDS meter reaches 10ppm or higher the resin should be replaced.
• Adjust flow at waterfed pole brush head by:
– Tap water valve or,
– Waterfed wash pole control (on/off) valve (if applicable).
4.3 Operation
- Periodically inspect the HydroPower Ultra system during use. Ensure hoses are properly attached. Inspect system for leaks and proper fit of top cap assembly.
- Take care when working to ensure there is enough slack in waterfed pole tubing. This tubing is connected to the top cover of the unit, and excessive tugging may cause the system to tip over.
- Tap water flows into the system’s lower connection port via tap pressure and flows upwards through the HydroPower Ultra unit. Pure water exits through the top connection. When plumbing line pressures fall below 44 psi (3 Bar), a reduction in flow rates will be noticeable.
Resin Change
5.1 Resin Change – Ultra Resin Pack
Unger‘s pre-measured replacement Ultra Resin Packs are designed to allow a
controlled resin expansion within a designed safety limit.
-
SHUT OFF FEED WATER SUPPLY
• Depress yellow lever on system head assembly.
• Turn tap water valve to “OFF” position.
• Disconnect waterfed wash pole hose. -
RELEASE SYSTEM HEAD ASSEMBLY
• While continuing to depress the yellow lever, use a counter-clockwise quarter‐turn to release system head assembly; remove and set aside.
• Reach into housing and remove exhausted resin by hand; discard according to local regulations.
• Press yellow FastLock opening lever (fig. E) to remove pressure from the tank. • Steady (or “Stabilize”) the base unit with your feet, gently press the top cap down and use a counter-clockwise 1/8 turn to release top cap assembly; remove and set aside (fig. F). • Open all valves to facilitate the removal of the Ultra Resin Packs.
• Reach into housing and remove exhausted Ultra Resin Pack(s) by hand with the rubber handle (fig. G); discard according to local regulations. -
REPLACE ULTRA RESIN PACKS
• Install new Ultra Resin Packs (fig. H) – be sure to seat the packs with rubber handle facing up. Pat down the resin pack by hand to ensure it is seated properly. Small Tank Unit (UHP01): = 1x green Ultra Resin Pack (never use red Ultra Resin Pack in this unit!) Large Tank Unit (UHP3C): =1x green Ultra Resin Pack (top position)
2x red Ultra Resin Packs (middle + bottom position) -
REINSTALL TOP CAP ASSEMBLY
• Press down gently, then turn the top cap 1/8 clockwise while steadying the base unit with your feet. -
RECONNECT WATERFED POLE TUBING (fig. I)
• Turn “ONˮ water supply at tap (fig. J). • Inspect system as it pressurizes.
• Keep discharge line open and hold down yellow lever to remove trapped air from system (fig. K). -
TEST SYSTEM TDS (fig. L) The value should be at 000.

Tips For Cleaning With Pure Water
After cleaning I see stains or smudges on the window.
What could be causing this ?
The cleaning was not thorough enough:
Make sure to wash off all visible dirt and residue. Rinse thoroughly.
Cleaning detergent residue on the surface:
If the window was previously cleaned using traditional method, it may take up
to 2-3 rounds of cleaning with pure water to achieve desired results and
remove all soap residue from the glass.
The water is not 100% pure:
Water is considered pure when its TDS measure is 0 ppm – use the TDS meter to
check.
To help ensure spot-free cleaning, the resin should be changed when the TDS
meter reads 10 ppm.
Consider the overall quality of the water being used, e.g., well water may
contain contaminants that make it unsuitable for window cleaning.
Wrong movement of the brush:
Always wash and rinse from top to bottom.
Dirt around the frames:
Over time, dirt may accumulate in and around the frames, especially when
silicone joints and rubber seals are not watertight. Water can loosen and
transfer the dirt onto the glass, so wash and rinse thoroughly.
How do I clean wooden window frames?
Avoid glazed or oiled frames:
Pure water dissolves the oils or tannin.
Varnished window frames:
Avoid using pure water as it may accelerate stripping of these coatings.
Tips for cleaning with pure water
Additional Tips
Damage to laminated and coated glass:
Test on a small area first and allow to dry. Check the results before cleaning
the entire glass surface. Water beading on the surface may indicate
hydrophobic glass – change to Fan Jets for better results.
High air pollution:
Dirt particles present in the air, especially in heavy traffic or high pollen
count areas, may affect cleaning results – you may need to dry the window with
a squeegee.
Dirty brush:
Clean the brush to avoid transferring any impurities back onto the window.
Post construction cleaning:
This may require removal of plaster, stucco, concrete, paint, texture, taping
mud, mortar, silicone, stickers and tape from glass. Generally, traditional
glass cleaning methods are recommended for this type of cleaning.
Scratching of plexiglass & acrylic:
Surface dirt retained through static charge can produce scratches in the soft
material. Apply plenty of pure water and use a soft brush such as a boar
bristle brush. Advise client of the risk of scratching.
