Minimum wall and ceiling clearance

Assembling your Tiki Torch

  1. Your Southern Stainless Tiki Torch is fully assembled and ready to use.
  2. Remove the Tiki Torch from the box and dispose of all transit protection material, including plastic and cardboard, appropriately.
  3. Record the serial number of your appliance here for future reference: __ (the serial number is located on the outside of the packaging and inside the door at the head of the torch).

Installing your Tiki Torch

  1. Choose the location for installation of your Tiki Torch. Refer to the important information on page 6: Requirements for installation of a gas appliance.
WARNING: THE TIKI TORCH IS FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY.

  2. The Tiki Torch must have overhead clearance of:

  3. 1500mm if the ceiling is made from combustible material.

  4. 1200mm if the ceiling is made from non-combustible material.

  5. If you have a natural gas Tiki Torch or are installing your Tiki Torch to a reticulated ULP gas supply, it must be installed by a qualified gas plumber to the requirements of the local authority – local gas fitting regulations, AS/NZS 5601.1, municipal building codes and any other relevant statutory regulations.

  6. All models of the Tiki Torch except the SS-TT-LP-B (ULP gas integrated bottle compartment model) must be fastened in place following the instructions listed below.

  7. The ULP gas integrated bottle compartment model can be moved to an appropriate position that fulfils the clearance requirements outlined above and may be secured to the ground using a dyna bolt or chemset fixing with a nut through the fixing hole situated inside the compartment on the base of the unit (as shown).
WARNING: REMOVE THE GAS CYLINDER FROM THE COMPARTMENT BEFORE MOVING THE APPLIANCE.SOUTHERN STAINLESS TIKI TORCH Gas Tiki Torch-

  8. The following instructions apply to the tall stand model (SS-TT-NG-TSTAND, SS-TT-LP-R- TSTAND):

  9. For installation onto a concrete surface (refer to pictures on the following page):

  10. Build a foundation with minimum measurements of 450 x 450 x 450 deep. Insert a half inch BSP fitting, protruding at a minimum of 30 ml from the foundation. You could also insert it into the slab. Either option can be chosen, taking into consideration that there is enough foundation for the Tiki Torch.

  11. The base plate needs to go over the half inch BSP fitting with a half inch BSP lock nut.

  12. Keep the base plate loosened for now to allow for adjustments along the way.

  13. Screw the Tiki Torch down onto the half inch BSP fitting and face the door to where you want it to open.

  14. Rotate the bottom plate so that the bolts can go through the plate and line up with the nuts.

  15. Unscrew the Tiki Torch and then dine a bolt the bottom plate into position in the foundation.

  16. Fix the plate into position by locking up the half inch BSP lock nut.

  17. Drill six holes, a minimum of 60 ml deep and insert the stainless steel dino bolts. Lock the plate into position.

  18. Insert the six stainless steel dino bolts and then tighten the dino bolts up. The Tiki Torch is now ready to put onto the half inch BSP fitting.

  19. Lock these nuts tight enough to retain the Tiki Torch.

  20. Place some pipe sealant or tape onto the half inch BSP fitting to seal it so that there isn’t any leakage and then face the Tiki Torch to your desired position.

  21. Use the jacking bolts to screw into the three nuts at the bottom and then lock these up on the slots. Using the jacking bolts, you can now plumb the Tiki Torch to be level.

  22. You should now have all threads with two nuts. Place one nut down the bottom to lock up onto the existing nut and the other one will become a jacking nut later.

  23. Put this on an angle and place it into the nut. Use a screwdriver to do all the threads up.

  24. Place the last three nuts on top of all the threads and screw them down. These become the jacking nuts.

  25. Lock & tighten the top and bottom three nuts on the threaded rod and then use a spanner to adjust the level of the Tiki Torch.

  26. Using a spirit level you can then level the Tiki Torch by using the jacking nuts and then slide the cover plate down over the internal workings. The Tiki Torch is now complete.SOUTHERN STAINLESS TIKI TORCH Gas Tiki Torch-FIG8

  27. For installation into a timber deck or other surface (refer to pictures on the following page):

  28. If the space beneath the deck is accessible, place the fixing plate into position and screw the whole appliance into the ½” female BSP fitting using the ½” male BSP fitting attached to the bottom of the stand.

  29. Attach the fixing plate to the deck using m5 counter-sunk bolts with nuts until it sits flush or a maximum of 20mm above the deck.

  30. Screw the all-threads into the three 10mm fixed nuts (welded) until they hit the fixing plate and secure into position using locking nuts.

  31. Leave a maximum of 70mm protruding.

  32. Sandwich the base plate of the appliance between two sets of jacking nuts.

  33. Adjust the jacking nuts until the appliance is level.

  34. Fasten the final fixing nuts and slide the cover into place.

  35. If the space beneath the deck is not accessible, secure the appliance using the same method described above for concrete.SOUTHERN STAINLESS TIKI TORCH Gas Tiki Torch-FIG9

LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. All models of the Tiki Torch are supplied with a UV resistant cover to protect against accumulation of debris. This cover must be removed from the appliance prior to lighting.
  2. Always turn the control knob to the off position when the Tiki Torch is not in use.
  3. Replace the cover once the appliance has cooled down.

Preparation – ULP gas integrated bottle compartment model (SS-TT-LP-B)

  1. Use the handle to open the door to the gas storage compartment. Pull on the door firmly so that it unclips. To remove the door, pull outwards and away from the hinge locators on the right hand side.

  2. Attach a 4kg or 9kg gas bottle to the gas hose and regulator which is located within the gas storage compartment.

  3. Inspect the hose assembly before each use to check that it is not damaged. If damaged or kinked, the hose must be replaced prior to use.

  4. Turn on the gas bottle to check for leaks before operation. If you believe there is a gas leak you may be able to smell or hear the leak, but do not rely on being able to do so. Apply soapy water around the gas connections and hose using either a spray or brush.
Bubbles will appear to indicate a leak – if it is near the bottle end of the hose it is likely that the connection is not tight enough. If there is a leak where the hose connects to the appliance, contact the manufacturer immediately and do not use.
WARNING: NEVER USE A NAKED FLAME TO TEST FOR LEAKS

  5. Remove the fitted protective cover from the Tiki Torch prior to lighting. IMPORTANT: For storage and cylinder exchange, disconnect the cylinder only. Do not disconnect the hose from the appliance.
Preparation – all other models: reticulated gas supply

  6. If your Tiki Torch is to be connected to a reticulated gas supply, installation must be carried out by a suitably qualified service person.

  7. Before proceeding, the gas plumber should check the pressure of the Tiki Torch. The required pressure is 2.75 kPa for ULP gas supply and 1 kPa for natural gas supply; contact the manufacturer if the gas pressure is different to that which is specified.

  8. The main gas supply should already be turned on, and when the appliance is being used for the first time the gas line must be purged. This is the same process as lighting the appliance but may take from 2 to 5 minutes.

  9. Remove the fitted protective cover from the Tiki Torch prior to lighting.

Lighting the torch

  1. To light the Tiki Torch, turn the in-line ball valve 90 degrees left/anti clockwise to the vertical position, depress the flame failure valve and continue to hold down for up to 60 seconds (or longer if the line is being purged).

  2. While continuing to hold the flame failure valve, depress the ignitor button until the burner ignites. Once the burner is lit, continue to hold the control in for 10 seconds to allow the thermocouple to warm. Do not release the flame failure valve until completing this step. If the burner does not light after 30 seconds, wait 60 seconds for the gas to disperse and repeat this step.
WARNING: IF THE BURNER FAILS TO IGNITE, DO NOT PLACE ANY PART OF THE HEAD OR BODY ABOVE THE TORCH. THE POSSIBILITY OF DELAYED IGNITION HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SEVERE BURNS.

  3. Release the flame failure valve (if the main burner goes out, repeat steps 2 and 3).

  4. Always run the Tiki Torch on fully open with the knob in the vertical position.

  5. To turn off the flame, turn the control knob to the horizontal position.

Tilt safety switch – ULP gas integrated bottle compartment model (SS-TT- LP-B)
The integrated bottle compartment model is fitted with a tilt safety switch that extinguishes the flame if the appliance tips over. If the torch does not automatically reignite when returned to the upright position, repeat the steps listed above.

Quick reference guide
For convenience, the following quick-reference guide to lighting your Tiki Torch is located inside the door to the burner:

MAINTENANCE

Cleaning your Tiki Torch
Your Tiki Torch is manufactured from quality 316 marine grade stainless steel. As its name suggests, “stainless” steel stains less than steel, but it must be cleaned regularly to prevent tea-staining and rusting. Use a good quality stainless steel polish every 2-3 months.

  1. If the Tiki Torch has not been cleaned for long periods, you may notice a brown discolouration forming on the stainless steel surfaces. This is called tea-staining and it should be attended to in the early stages as it will be much easier to remove. If left, it will gradually get worse until it turns into rust.
  2. The exterior surfaces of the Tiki Torch should be cleaned or wiped down regularly to prevent tea-staining and to prolong the high finish of the stainless steel.
  3. Washing the Tiki Torch with warm soapy water will help to remove general contamination found in the air such as dust, dirt and salt. However, do not hose and do not direct water inside the torch head.
  4. Applying a silicone-based polish to the external surfaces is the ideal way to form a protective layer to prevent tea-staining and rusting. Apply and work the polish with a soft cloth then remove the polish with a second, clean, soft cloth.
  5. Prior to operation following long periods of non-use, check the Tiki Torch (including the burner) to ensure it is free from debris.
  6. Always replace the protective cover when the Tiki Torch is not in use.
  • Do not use scouring pads on stainless steel surfaces.
  • Do not use steel wool. Steel wool is generally made from carbon steel and will damage the stainless steel surface, leaving it prone to rusting.
  • Please contact us if you have any questions relating to installation, servicing or maintenance.

How to prolong the life of your Tiki Torch

  1. Conduct a visual inspection for damage prior to each use – look for kinked or worn hoses, debris and signs of impact.
  2. If the Tiki Torch does not appear to be working properly, seek help from a suitably qualified service person. Abnormal indications include:
  3. Failure to ignite or problems with ignition
  4. Difficulty turning the controller or pushing down the thermocouple control
  5. Failure to remain alight when the control knob is released after ignition
  6. Presence of carbon deposits
  7. Even if the Tiki Torch appears to be working normally, inspection by an authorised person to check for safe operation is recommended every twelve months.

SERVICING

The following information must only be used by a suitably qualified service person.

Dismantling the Tiki Torch
Refer to the diagram below.

  1. Slide the flange at the base of the appliance upwards to reveal the ball valve handle on the gas inlet and turn the ball valve handle to the OFF position.
  2. Open the door at the head of the Tiki Torch for access to the pressure test point (the injector sizes are 1.07mm for ULP gas and 1.6mm for natural gas, and correct pressures are 2.75 kPa for ULP gas and 1 kPa for natural gas).
  3. With the door still open, unscrew the single screw at the rear of the casing using a Phillips head screwdriver. Keep the screw in a safe place.
  4. Holding the head vertically, slide the outer casing up and away to reveal the internal workings of the appliance. Set aside the outer casing.
  5. Go back to the gas inlet at the base of the torch and undo the compression nut at the top of the ball valve. This will loosen the thin tube that runs inside the appliance in preparation for removal of the top of the Tiki Torch.
  6. Return to the head of the Tiki Torch and locate the three screws under the head. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove these screws from the bottom and the whole assembly will slide out from the post. This provides access to the regulator if it needs to be changed.

Replacement of components

  1. All other components (including the piezo ignition, electrode, thermocouple and tilt switch) can be changed on-site except for the flame failure valve, ball valve and the injectors.
  2. If the flame failure valve, ball valve or injectors require replacement, the head of the Tiki Torch should be removed and returned to the manufacturer for servicing.
  3. Undoing the screws from the bottom of the head will enable the head to be removed but the thin tubing and the regulator will still be in place. To remove these for easy packaging, loosen and remove the compression nut from the bottom of the flame failure valve.

Reassembling the Tiki Torch

  1. Once the service is completed, reassemble all components.
  2. Apply soapy water to the joins to ensure there is no gas leakage.
