LOCATION

Requirements for installation of a gas appliance

  • This appliance shall only be used in an above-ground, open-air situation with natural ventilation, without stagnant areas, where gas leakage and products of combustions are rapidly dispersed by wind and natural convection.
  • Any enclosure in which the appliance is used shall comply with one of the following:
    • An enclosure with walls on the sides but at least one permanent opening at ground level and no overhead cover.
    • Within a partial enclosure that includes an overhead cover and no more than two walls.
    • If situated within a partial enclosure that includes an overhead cover and more than two walls, the following shall apply:
    1. At least 25% of the total wall area is completely open.
    2. At least 30% of the remaining wall area is open and unrestricted.
  • In the case of balconies, at least 20% of the total of the side, back and front wall areas shall be, and remain, open and unrestricted.

ASSEMBLY

  1. To open the timber box, undo the Phillips-head screws with a screwdriver or battery drill.

  2. Remove the fire pit and all transit protection material from the box.

  3. Remove and put aside the coloured glass pebbles, the safety glass and stainless steel glass clips.

  4. Choose the location where the fire pit is to be installed:
    a. This appliance is for outdoor use only (refer to information on page 2 Requirements for fire pit installation).
    b. The fire pit must have overhead clearance of equal to or more than 1.5m.
    c. The overall dimensions of the assembled fire pit (round and square models) is 1m x 1m wide x 0.83m high.
    d. The fire pit must be fixed to the ground (see installation instructions).

  5. Install the safety glass by placing two pieces of glass next to each other on the outside edge of the burner tray. Continue to place one piece at a time while attaching the stainless glass clips in between the top of each piece of glass.

  6. Take note of where the pilot light is located within the fire pit, open the coloured bags with the glass pebbles and pour into the burner tray. Do not pour directly over the pilot light. Avoid any material falling into the pilot light.

  7. After all the glass has been poured in, level the glass around the fire pit tray and move away any glass pebbles which may be lying on top of the pilot light.

  8. Your fire pit is now ready for operation.

INSTALLATION

Installing your fire pit when using natural gas or a reticulated propane supply.

  1. If you have a natural gas fire pit or are installing your fire pit to a reticulated LPG supply, it must be installed by a qualified gas plumber to the requirements of the local authority—local gas fitting regulations, AS/NZS5601.1, municipal building codes, and any other relevant statutory regulations.

  2. Remove the Phillips-head screws from the side access door.

  3. The appliance must be fastened to the ground. If your appliance has an integrated bottle storage compartment, there is a fixing hole on the inside of the gas storage enclosure.
Fix the appliance to the ground using a dyna bolt or chemset fixing with nut. If your fire pit is for natural gas or reticulated propane, there is a fixing plate located on the inside of the leg which can be accessed from the access panel on the side of the appliance.

  4. If your fire pit is for reticulated propane gas or natural gas, a regulator is already installed to the appliance. Attach the gas inlet to the gas regulator, located in the centre of the appliance.

  5. The gas plumber is required to install a ball valve (not supplied with the appliance) as close as possible to the inlet. The gas line must be purged after connection of gas to the appliance. Be aware that purging could take between 2 and 5 minutes.

  6. Install the access door back onto the appliance.

  7. Test the appliance is operating satisfactorily before leaving.

  8. The fire pit is not designed to be used in the rain. If exposed to rain, the fire pit should not be operated. The appliance must be covered while not in use. Do not install the cover immediately after use. Allow at least 1hr until the appliance has cooled before installing any cover.

OPERATION

Controls

Operating your fire pit – propane bottled gas

  1. Open the gas storage compartment by placing your index finger inside the pull hole. Pull on the door firmly so that it unclips. To remove the door, pull outwards and away from the hinge locators on the left-hand side.
  2. Attach a 4 kg or 9kg gas bottle to the gas hose and regulator which is located within the gas storage compartment. Inspect the hose assembly before each use of the appliance and check that it does not contact the top of the cylinder enclosure (it heats up). If there is evidence of excessive abrasion or wear, or if the hose is damaged, the hose assembly must be replaced prior to operation of the appliance – contact us if required.
  3. Turn on the gas bottle to check for leaks before operation – see the end of this section. If you find a gas leak at the bottle end of the hose it is likely you have not tightened the connection enough.
  4. When starting the fire pit for the first time after connecting a gas bottle, the gas line needs to be purged. To purge the line, depress the control knob and turn left/anti clockwise until it reaches the PILOT position. Depress further and continue to hold for 60 seconds. Don’t release the control until completing step 5.
  5. If the pilot does not light after 30 seconds, wait 60 seconds for the propane to disperse and repeat this step.
  6. While continuing to depress the control knob, push the ignitor button for 5 seconds or until the pilot ignites (the pilot light has ignited if a small flame is visible at the pilot location, it can also be viewed through the view port on the side of the fire pit). Once the pilot is lit, continue to hold the control in for 10 seconds to allow the pilot to warm.
  7. Release the control.
  8. If the pilot light goes out, repeat steps 3 and 4.
  9. Turn the control to the HIGH position then depress the flame failure button for 10 seconds (gas will start to flow through the main burner and the flame will ignite).
  10. Turn the control to the LOW position by depressing and turning left/anti clockwise.
  11. To turn off the flame without shutting down the pilot light, turn the control to the PILOT position (the main burner will shut down and pilot light will continue to burn). You may then re-ignite the flame by turning to the desired location.
  12. Shut down the appliance, including the pilot, by depressing and turning the control knob to the OFF position. (Make sure the control is turned fully off and the pilot is no longer burning).
  13. Turn off the gas supply at the gas bottle.

Note: For storage and cylinder exchange, disconnect the cylinder only. Do not disconnect the hose from the appliance.

Operating your fire pit – natural gas or reticulated LPG supply

  1. Turn the gas control to the PILOT position.
  2. Depress the ignition button and hold.
  3. Depress the gas control and hold for 30 seconds. Look through the sight glass to see if the pilot is alight.
  4. If the pilot does not light, wait 60 seconds and repeat this step.
  5. Turn the control to the HIGH position then depress the flame failure button for 10 seconds. Gas will start to flow through the main burner and the flame will ignite.
  6. If the main burner does not ignite, turn the control knob to the OFF position and begin again at step 1.

Leak test procedure

  • Ensure all gas valves are in the OFF position.
  • In a small container, mix a solution of water and detergent or soap.
  • Once the hose has been connected, turn on the valve at the gas bottle or mains as appropriate.
  • Using a brush or spray bottle, apply the solution to the gas connection points and look for bubbles forming – bubbling will indicate a leak.
  • Turn off the valve and re-tighten the joint if possible. Repeat the leak test.
  • If the leak persists, turn off the gas at the isolation valves and contact a licensed gas fitter.

If there is a gas leak at the hose connection to the appliance, contact the manufacturer immediately and do not use.

WARNING

  • Never use a naked flame to test for leaks.
  • Never leave the fire pit unattended while in operation.
  • Always turn the control knob to the off position when not using the fire pit.
  • It is recommended that the fire pit be checked every twelve months for safe operation by an authorised person. Abnormal operation of the fire pit can be recognised by the following:
  • Failure to ignite, or problems with ignition.
  • The controller is difficult to turn or push down.
  • The fire pit does not stay alight when the control knob is released after ignition.
  • There is evidence of carbon deposits.

IMPORTANT:

  • The fire pit is not designed to be used in the rain. If exposed to rain the fire pit should not be operated. The appliance must be covered while not in use. Do not install the cover immediately after use. Allow at least 1hr until appliance has cooled before installing any cover.

STORAGE

Your fire pit has been supplied with a durable, weather resistant, Nylex cover. When the fire pit is not in use this cover MUST be installed over the top of the fire pit to prevent any intake of rain.

Prior to placing the cover over the fire pit, attach the support pole to the inside of the cover as shown.

Position the base of the pole on top of the glass pebbles and lower the cover into place.

The pole will prevent the cover from collecting water. Do not use the fire pit with the pole in place.

The cover has an elastic cord which can be loosened for installation then tightened when the cover is in place.

MAINTENANCE

Cleaning your fire pit

Your fire pit is manufactured from quality 316 marine grade stainless steel. As its name suggests “stainless” stains less than steel. Stainless steel needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent it from tea staining and rusting. Use a stainless steel spray or wipe-on polish every 2-3 months.

External Cleaning

The exterior surfaces of the fire pit should be cleaned or wiped down regularly to prevent tea staining and to prolong the high finish of the stainless steel.

If the fire pit has not been cleaned for long periods you may notice tea stains. Tea-staining is a brown discoloration that forms on stainless steel surfaces and can be prevented by following this cleaning guide. If tea staining occurs it should be attended to at its early stages as it is much easier to remove. If left, the tea staining will gradually get worse until it turns into rust.

Washing the fire pit with warm soapy water can help to remove general contamination found in the air such as dust, dirt and salt.

Silicone based polishes are ideal when applied to the external surfaces. Silicone based polish will help the stainless steel form a protective layer that will prevent tea staining and rusting.

Apply and work the polish with a soft cloth then remove polish with a second clean, soft cloth.

SERVICING

For authorised persons only: The gas control must be oiled/greased regularly to prevent it from becoming jammed or ceased. Remove the gas control knob by pulling it off. Apply a small amount of lubricant grease around the shaft of the control where it enters through the side of the appliance. This will prevent the control from taking in water and corroding.

* Do not use scouring pads on stainless surfaces*
Do not use steel wool. Steel wool is generally made from carbon steel and will damage the stainless steel surface leaving it prone to rusting .**
