Product Information: Upflow Carbon Filter

The Upflow Carbon Filter is a water treatment system designed to provide clean and treated water. It is manufactured by Clean Water Store and is suitable for residential use. The filter utilizes carbon media to remove impurities and contaminants from the water.

Key Features

  • 4 cubic foot capacity
  • Upflow design for efficient water flow
  • Includes In/Out Head with ports for water inlet and outlet
  • Compatible with a minimum pressure of 20 PSI and a maximum pressure of 90 PSI

Product Usage Instructions

Packing List

  1. Review the packing list to ensure all parts are present before installation.
  2. If you have an electric water heater and plan to turn off the water to the house, shut off the power to the water heater before installation.
  3. Select a suitable location for the filter system on a dry, level spot that is protected from freezing temperatures.
  4. Gather all plumbing parts needed for installation.

Best Practices for Piping & Drain Installation

  1. If setting up the filter as an Upflow filter, connect the water inlet to the OUT port on the In/Out Head and the water outlet to the INLET port. Ensure that the water flows down the distributor tube and up through the filter media.
  2. Install a working gate or ball valve before and after the Upflow Carbon filter. Optional pressure gauges can be added. Install a hose bib or a ball valve on a tee after the carbon filter, which allows for rinsing the filter during startup and testing the water before it enters the household plumbing.
  3. Consider plumbing in a bypass loop around the system to isolate it for service or maintenance.
  4. If using copper piping, avoid directly heating the copper pipe onto the filter to prevent damage to the plastic components.

PACKING LIST

Carbon Upflow 4 Cubic Foot:
Your new 4 Cubic Foot Upflow Carbon filter includes:

  • Qty 1 – 16” x 65” Poly Glass Filter Tank
  • Qty 1 – 1 ½” diameter Distributor Tube with Bottom Basket Qty 1 – In/Out Head with Top Screen
  • Qty 4 – 1 CF boxes Coconut Shell Carbon (Standard or Catalytic) Qty 1 – 50lb box of gravel

Pre-Installation

  1. Review your packing list and make sure you have received all the parts before beginning installation.
  2. If you are going to be turning off the water to the house and you have an electric water heater, shut off the power to the water heater before beginning installation.
  3. Pick a suitable location for your filter system on a dry level spot where it won’t be exposed to freezing temperatures. A minimum of 20 PSI is required. Maximum pressure is 90 PSI.
  4. Get all of your plumbing parts together before beginning installation. Installation typically takes 3 to 5 hours. Once completed and pressure tested you will want to run the water in your home for 15 –20 minutes to clear out any fines from the new media.
  5. After the system is installed and running, your water may be temporarily discolored particularly if the system is installed into older or corroded piping. This typically clears up over a day or two.

Best Practices for Piping & Drain Installation

  1. If you are setting up your filter to be an Upflow filter, connect the water inlet to the “OUT” port on the In/Out Head and water outlet to the “INLET” port (diagram below). The water should flow down the distributor tube and up through the filter media.
  2. Make sure there is a working gate or ball valve before the Upflow Carbon filter and also one after. Pressure gauges are optional and perhaps not necessary but a hose bib (which is a faucet that you can attach a garden hose to) or better yet a ball valve on a tee is required after the carbon filter and before the second ball valve. This allows you to rinse your new filter on start-up and gives you a place to test the water before it enters your household plumbing.
  3. It is also advised to plumb in a bypass loop around your system to isolate your system for service or maintanace.
  4. If you will be using copper piping, do not sweat the copper pipe directly on to the filter. Avoid heating the plastic.
  5. Use no more than 2 wraps of thread tape and pipe sealant to seal the inlet and outlet port threads.
WARNING: Do Not Overtighten fittings or use more than 2 wraps of thread tape as you may crack the intlet/outlet head.

How Your Carbon Filter UpFlow Works
See Fig 1. In your Carbon Filter water enters the top of the tank and flows down through the distributor tube and up through the carbon media.

Figure 1 – Upflow Carbon tank diagram

When first starting up after adding new carbon media:

  1. Add carbon media and fill with water.
  2. Allow to soak for at least 2 hours but 8 to 12 hours or overnight is best for soaking time.
  3. Close Valve 2
  4. Connect garden hose to Hose bib and turn on water and allow carbon to rinse to drain for 20 to 30 minutes.

Assembly and Installation Instructions

  1. Place the distributor tube in the tank. Cover the top of the distributor tube or wrap the top of distributor tube with electrical or duct tape. You do not want any carbon to go down the distributor tube, this is very important!

  2. Center the Distributor tube within the top tank opening.

  3. Add the gravel first and then the carbon media.

  4. Remove cap or tape from the top of the distributor tube.

  5. Fill the tank completely with water. This will allow the carbon media to settle and eliminate the need of “purging” the air out of the tank later.

  6.  Allow carbon to soak for at least 2 hours but it’s better to let it soak for 12 to 24 hours to purge any trapped gasses.

  7. Lubricate the IN/Out head and Distributor Tube O-rings with the provided food grade silicone packet.

  8. Install Top Screen onto the IN/Out Head

  9. Thread the inlet/outlet head and secure down onto the tank.
NOTE: Do not use any thread tape or lube on the threads. The seal is made by the O-ring)

  10. Connect the IN pipe to the Outlet port and the Outlet pipe to the Inlet port.

  11. Put system on bypass, and the valve after the filter closed, open the hose bib tap after the carbon filter and allow water to run for a couple of minutes to flush out piping materials.

  12. Now take the Carbon filter off bypass. With the valve after the filter closed, allow the up-flow carbon to flush for 20 to 60 minutes through the hose bib. This is necessary to flush out carbon fines and dust. The water will be discolored to be black in color at first.

Maintenance
Make sure to occasionally monitor the chlorine residual after the carbon filter, there should be very little to no chlorine coming out of the carbon filter. After 1 to 3 years (depending on usage), or when you start to detect a chlorine residual in the water after the carbon filter, replace the carbon media with new carbon.
