GENERAL INFORMATION TO INSTALLATION

A pipe heating system uses the electric heater cable to compensate the heat that is lost through the thermal insulation. Replacing the lost heat allows the pipe and fluid inside the pipe to be maintained at a desired temperature.

Heating of pipes or gutters can prevent the following damages:

  • Bursting of pipes due to frost
  • Freezing of liquids inside
  • Cloging of pipes and gutters

IMPORTANT NOTES: Please read this manual carefully, before proceeding with installation. The system reliability and the effective operation are highly dependent upon its installation quality. The contents of this manual are intended mainly for persons who are familiar with the installation, the operation and the maintenance of electric trace heating systems.

  • Please shut down the system and ensure that energizing is impossible, before starting installation or maintenance.
  • The distance between the heating cables on a pipe must be at least 50mm.
  • The minimum distance to heating circuits in gutters is 2cm.
  • The installation cannot be under the mimimum bending radius.
  • Heating cables cannot be crossed or folded.
  • Please pay attention that pipelines in operation do not reach over 60 °C.
  • It is recommended to have the installation done by an electrically qualified person in accordance with the latest local and international regulations and standards.
  • The application of a fault-current circuit breaker (30 mA) with the use of heating circuits is required by law.
  • The termination of heating elements may only be done b y an experienced professional, according to valid VDE Regulations.
  • The power connection and end connection termination must be handled cautiously. The allowed pull stress of the terminations cannot exceed 120 N.
  • The connetions cannot be folded or damaged.
  • It is not allowed to shorten or extend the heating circuit.
  • Do not open or replace the original termination. We recommend to use a termination box when extending the cold lead length.
  • Heating circuits cannot be energized while rolled together.
  • The green/yellow cable (earthing cable) must be permanentely connected to a reliable earthing (PE-wire).
  • Ensure that all mechanical pipe tests (i.e. hydrolic testing / cleaning) have been completed.
  • Plan the installation of the pipe heating section.
  • Make the presence of the heating circuit visable, i.e. by placement of warning labels or marking in place, for example on circuit breaker cabinets.
  • Furthermore, they need to be part of the electrical documentation along the installation.
  • Sharp edges, burrs, and too high pulling forces are to be avoided during installation and pulling of the heating cables.
  • Heating sections are not allowed to be directly installed onto plastic pipes or plastic parts. First the plastic object must absolutely be 100% covered with aluminum foil.
  • Please install the heating section stricktly according to the wiring diagrams.
  • By installation or usage, the heating cable bends cannot be installed or operated under the values stated in the technical data.
  • Never use your heating sytsem when there is a known damage.
  • The heating system cannot be exposed to mechanical loads, operation voltage and long running bends during the installation or operation.
  • It is forbidden to make alternative constructions on the heating elements that are not written in the instructions.
  • It is forbidden to use the heating section on a voltage other than 230±10 VAC.
  • It is forbidden to use a heating cable without overjacket, in glue layers or under a road surface.
  • It is compulsory to be made attention that after installation of the heating section, there is no construction work, such as drilling or sawing, being done in the installation area.
  • Contact of the heating cable with oil, disolvents, or other solutions shall be avoided during the installation.
  • The heating cable should not be over the maximum allowed power supply, in order to prevent overlasting of the electrical network.
  • The heated area must be fully even and free from stones and other pointed objects. Please use edge protection on the transition points of the gutters and downspouts if necessary.
  • Begin installation of the heating section at the termination box.
  • The completion of the power and end connections can only be done under dry conditions.

Check the heating cable characteristics. The overjacket of the heating section cannot be damaged.
Check the system (performance, section lengths).

The following preparation are recommended to be met before installation begins:

  • Draft an installation plan of the heating elements.
  • Determine the temperature sensor positions.
  • Determine the position and size of the electrical power cabinet.
  • Make the necessary tools and materials for installation available.
  • Decide an appropriate method for securing the heating section onto the pipe, roof, gutter, or downspout.
  • Free the pipe, roof, gutter, or downspout from leaves and other dirt

HEAT LOSS TABLE

This manual is not intended to cover the fundamentals of heat loss calculation. Please contact your supplier if a heat loss calculation is required.
Heat loss is when the ambient temperature is lower than that pipe maintenance temperature. There is a constant temperature change between warm and cold, that can, in the most unfortunate situation,cause your pipes to freeze. The heating circuits dependently maintain your pipe frost free by temperatures below to -20°C.

The following charts/ tables are intended to make it easier for you to choose the right heating power. The heating losses shown in this charts were established for an ambient temperature of -20°C. Please install the heating cables only alongside the pipe.

In case the power of a heating cable is not sufficient, we kindly ask you to increase the number of layers. Please pay attention to the fact that the shown values are approximate values only and are intended as a selection help only. The insulation values are average values only which may differ with different manufacturers. The measuring unit for the heat loss is W/m.

For example:
The normal needed power output for a 42mm pipe diameter with 5mm Mineral Wool insulation is 31 W/m at -20°C ambient temperature.
This means that the heating cable will need to be installed twice onto the pipe according to this example.

INSTALLATION ON PIPE

Check the materials:
Ensure that everything in the installation manual described parts are in the delivery.
Ensure that the available operation voltage and the operation voltage of the heating cable are the same.
Check the heating cable and all components for transportation damages. Check the heating cable additionally for damages to the overjacket.
Damaged heating cables cannot be used due to safety relevant reasons.

Check the pipe:
Check the pipe for welding perls, uneven surfaces or sharp edges. Remove these when found.
Ensure that all pipe surfaces are dry to the touch.

INSTALLATION AS ROOF AND DOWNSPOUT HEATING

CALCULATION AND SELECTION
It is important to consider the local conditions and type of roof construction by the selection. Roof constructions are generally categorized into the following two groups:

Cold roof: this roof construction is very good insulated.
Hot roof: this roof construction is very poorly insulated.

Normally, you shall always calculate with the „cold roof“ – conditions.
For the optimum selection of the correct heating system, the following values are to be taken into account:

  • Nominal dimension
    For larger sizes, you should increase the heating tape layer with the configuration multiplier shown in the table below.

GUTTERS
Please install the cable attachments to the gutter.
The distance between the cable attachments should be 0.25 m by one layer tracing and 0.5 m by multiple layer tracings. The heating cable should be installed onto the floor of box gutters.

DOWNSPUTS
Only one layer of heating cable is required by downspouts upt to a diameter of 100 mm. For downspouts with a diameter over 100 mm, the amount of heat cable tracings should be multiplied by the amount listed in the table.

ATTENTION: Please take 1m additional cable into account for the power and end termination by heating cables that are not factory terminated.

It is recommended that the heating cable loop when only one heating cable is used and your downspout runs under the ground level. Install the heating cable up to 80 cm under the ground level (frost limit) or until the downspout enters with the sewage network. An additional 2 m heating cable is required by downspouts that run under the ground level. Heating cable may be installed without tension rope in downspouts under 10 m length.

Secure the clamps onto the heating cable. The clamps should be secured with a distance of 250-400 mm. For prevention of damage to the heating cable, 2-3 layers of glass cloth tape should be wrapped around the cable on areas where the clamps are secured. Install the heating circuit to your object.

Two layers of heat tracing are required for downspouts with a diameter of more than 100 mm. A metal rope with polyethylen insulation is necessary for copper downspouts. Securing of the heating cable onto the tension rope is done as follows:

• Secure the heating cable every 1.5 m onto the rope using clamps.
• Install the prepared heating cable into the downspout.
• Protect the heating cable from sharp edges.
• We suggest to use a weight (max. 1 kg) at the end of the tension rope to prevent twisting of the rope.

VALLEYS AND DORMERS
Install the clamps to the valley and dormer sheet metal.
The distance between the clamps should be 0.25 m for one layer heat tracing and 0.5 m for more layer heat tracing.

EAVE FLASHING
Eave flashings are the transitions between the roof areas and the gutters. These protect the underconstruction from moisture going inside.
Install the clamps to the sheet metal.
The distance between the clamps should be 0.25 m for one layer heat tracing and 0.5 m for more layer heat tracing.
The heating cable should be installed on the lower part of the eave flashing.

WARRANTY

The manufacturer guarantees the conformity of the heating cable with the design description, assuming compliance with the assembly and operating instructions.
Warranty period – 2 years from date of purchase.

In case of a failure during guarantee period casued by a manufacturing defect, the customer has the right to supplementary performance. The warranty does not cover any damages due to inadequate handling, damages through a third party, wrong installation (not following the manual) or its consequential damages. Please keep your receipt.

For any warranty claims you have to show your sales receipt.
