PHILIPS BHS838 Flat Iron
Product Usage Instructions
- Comb your hair and select a section that is not wider than 5cm for straightening.
- Start near the hair roots and take a 2-3cm hair strand. Place the strand between the heating plates.
- Pull the hair tips over the straightener, pointing towards the ground.
- Hold the cool tip for support.
- Gently and slowly slide the straightener downwards until you reach the hair ends.
- To straighten the rest of your hair, repeat steps 1 to 5.
- To create inward waves, turn the straightener inwards at step 2 and repeat the above steps.
Tips
- Ensure not to stop during the straightening process to prevent overheating.
- After use, clean the appliance and heating plates with a damp cloth. Clean the ionic slot with a cotton swab, avoiding contact with the ionic pins.
- Store the product in a safe and dry place, free of dust. It can be hung using the hanging loop or stored in the supplied pouch. The plates can also be locked with the supplied cap.

Read this user manual carefully before you use the appliance and keep it for future reference.
- WARNING: Do not use this appliance near water.
- When the appliance is used in a bathroom, unplug it after use since the proximity of water presents a risk, even when the apoliance is switched off.
- WARNING: Do not use this appliance near bathtubs, showers, basins or other vessels containing water.
- Always unplug the appliance after use.
- If the main cord is damaged. vou must have it replaced by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.
- This appliance can be used by children aged from 8 years and above and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the appliance.
- Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children without supervision.
- For additional protection, we advise you to install a residual current device (RCD) in the electrical circuit that supplies the bathroom. This RCD must have a rated residual operating current not higher than 30mA. Ask your installer for advice.
- Before you connect the appliance, ensure that the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to the local power voltage.
- Do not use the appliance for any other purpose than described in this manual.
- Do not use the appliance on artificial hair.
- When the appliance is connected to the power, never leave it unattended.
- Never use any accessories or parts from other manufacturers or that Philips does not specifically recommend. If you use such accessories or parts, your guarantee becomes invalid.
- Do not wind the main cord round the appliance.
- Wait until the appliance has cooled down before you store it.
- Pay full attention when using the appliance since it could be extremely hot. Only hold the handle as other parts are hot and avoid contact with the skin.
- Always place the appliance with the stand on a heat- resistant, stable flat surface. The hot heating plates should never touch the surface or other flammable material.
- Avoid the main cord from coming into contact with the hot parts of the appliance.
- Keep the appliance away from flammable objects and material when it is switched on.
- Never cover the appliance with anything (e.g. a towel or clothing) when it is hot.
- Only use the appliance on dry hair.
- Do not operate the appliance with wet hands.
- Keep the heating plates clean and free of dust and styling products such as mousse, spray and gel. Never use the appliance in combination with styling products.
- The heating plates has coating. This coating might slowly wear away over time. However, this does not affect the performance of the appliance.
- If the appliance is used on color-treated hair, the heating plates may be stained.
- Always return the appliance to a service centre authorized by Philips for examination or repair. Repair by unqualified people could result in an extremely hazardous situation for the user.
- Do not insert metal objects into openings to avoid electric shock.
- Do not pull on the power cord after using. Always unplug the appliance by holding the plug.
- Burn hazard. Keep appliance out of reach from young children, particularly during use and cool down.
Electromagnetic fields (EMF)
- This Philips appliance complies with all applicable standards and regulations regarding exposure to electromagnetic fields.
Recycling
- This symbol means that this product shall not be disposed of with normal household waste (2012/19/EU).
- Follow your country’s rules for the separate collection of electrical and electronic products. Correct disposal helps prevent negative consequences for the environment and human health.
Before use
- Use the straightener only when your hair is dry.
- Select Preset Modes for quick access to your desired setting or Manual Settings for precise temperature. Please refer to the below table. Always select a lower setting when you use the straightener for the first time.
- Hair Type/Preset Modes/Manual Setting (Temperature Range)
- Thick, coarse, curly, hard- to-straighten/Fast (210°C)/210-230°C
- Normal, medium- textured or softly waved/Normal (190°C)/180-200°C
- Fine, pale, blonde, bleached or color-treated/Gentle (170°C)/170°C or below
- For hair protection, SenseIQ is automatically activated in the Preset Modes, you will see the SenseIQ badge (1) light up. When using the manual settings, you may select SenseIQ by pressing the (4). We recommend that you use SenselQ when using 170°C or above since more care should be used with higher temperatures.
Straighten your hair
Straighten your hair (Fig.B)
- 1 Press and hold the On/Off button (7) until the display screen lights up.
- Preset Mode “Normal” setting (2) will be displayed.
- Toggle through the Preset Mode (5) to select desired setting. Alternatively, press the + or – button (6) to select desired temperature setting.
- The indicator will stop blinking when the heating plates are ready for use.
- The ion function (9) is activated when the appliance is switched on, providing additional shine and reduces frizz.
- You may smell a special odor and hear a sizzling noise. It is common because they are caused by the ion generator.
- Comb your hair and take a section that is not wider than 5cm for straightening.
- Place the hair between the straightening plates (10) and press the handles firmly together.
- Slide the straightener down the length of the hair slowly in a single motion (max. 5 seconds) from root to end, without stopping to prevent overheating.
- To straighten the rest of your hair, repeat steps 3 to 5.
Note: Do not put hair into the ionic slots.
Creating waves
Creating waves (Fig.C)
- Start near the hair roots and take a 2-3cm hair strand. Place the strand of hair between the heating plates (10).
- To create outward waves, turn the straightener outwards so that the hair flips over the straightener.
- Pull the hair tips over the straightener so that it is pointing towards the ground.
- Hold the cool tip (11) for support.
- Gently and slowly slide the straightener downwards until you reach the hair ends.
- Use your fingers to give the hair a bit of a twist after releasing.
- To create inward waves, turn the straightener inwards at step 2 and repeat the above steps.
Tips
- Take smaller strands of hair for better results.
- Ionic slot should face downwards when first clamping hair strand.
- Use hand to flip hair tips over straightener after turning.
- Hold the cool tip for better control in turning and pulling through.
- Gently relax the grip on the handle as you pull your hair through.
After use:
- Switch off the appliance and unplug it.
- Place it on a heat-resistant surface until it cools down.
- Clean the appliance and heating plates with a damp cloth. Clean the ionic slot with a cotton swab, but do not touch the ionic pins.
- (Fig.D) Keep it in a safe and dry place, free of dust. You can also hang it with the handing loop (8) or store it with the supplied pouch (13) or lock the plates with the supplied cap (12).
Note
- Do not insert the appliance into the pouch or cap while it is still hot.
- The appliance is equipped with an auto-shut off function.
- After 60 minutes, the appliance switches off automatically.
