GENERAL INFORMATION
UNGUISAN® nail prosthetics is a professional method of creating artificial toe and finger nails. It was developed by Josef Greppmayr (1901-1977) back in the middle of the last century and patented in 1953. The method has undergone constant further development and refinement, making it the most versatile and sophisticated form of nail replacement available today. For UNGUISAN® nail prosthetics a special, two-component, synthetic resin consisting of a powder and a liquid hardener is used. The name UNGUISAN® was put together from the Latin words “unguis” (nail) and “sanus” (healthy) and it thus reflects the primary aim of the treatment.
Mixing the two UNGUISAN® components initiates a cross-linking process
(polymerization) which lasts several minutes. During this time the user can
shape the plastic to his own individual requirements. The result will be an
artificial nail which colour, shape and characteristics imitate a natural
nail. UNGUISAN® can be used to treat a wide range of nail problems, ranging
from chronic nail damage to temporary deformation. As a general rule, a
remnant of natural nail has to be present, providing a durable anchorage for
the artificial nail. UNGUISAN® only bonds to naturtal nail, not to the skin.
Examples of frequent indications for nail prosthetics are:
- trauma and damage of nail plate
- onychorrhexis
- schizonychia
- onchogryposis
- cosmetic defects
Nail prosthetics must not be performed in case of open wounds, injuries or inflammation on the nail bed or close proximity. In cases of fungal nail infections (onychomycosis), a decision whether nail prosthetics is advisable should be taken in the light of the individual circumstances. To be able to use this fascinating technique you require chiropodial skills together with the standard equipment of a podiatric practice.
The UNGUISAN® starter kit provides all the materials and implements additionally needed. By following the instructions given below, you will soon be able to greatly enlarge your scope of treatment.
Depending on the particular circumstances, there are two different variations of the UNGUISAN® method available. In either case you need to consider the following points before treatment begins:
- The area of nail and nailbed must be free of loose or damaged pieces of nail and areas of cornification.
- Make sure that the nail remnant and the nail bed are dry, free of grease and clean.
- Different heights of the nailbed should be levelled in order to ensure an even underside of the artificial nail. Packing of deep nail sulci with dry tamponades or applying an adhesive film onto the nail bed have proven successful for this purpose.
MIXING OF UNGUISAN® CLASSIC (2-COMPONENT RESIN)
To mix the UNGUISAN® classic, use 1-2 level gauging spoons of UNGUISAN® powder. Place the powder in the silicone mixing bowl and using the pipette add UNGUISAN® liquid hardener (approx. 20 drops per spoon).
Stir the mixture evenly and smoothly with the blunt end of the spatula, always
working in the same direction. Be careful not to stir in any
air bubbles. Mix the powder and hardener until the consistency of the mixture
resembles „fresh honey“. More powder or hardener can be added if necessary.
The plastic will slowly start to become more viscous while you are mixing it.
When the UNGUISAN® mass will still drip off the spatula, apply it to the nail bed a small portion at a time. In doing this, work from the root of the nail up to distal end of the nail bed.

METHOD 1: PLATE PROSTHESIS
For a plate prosthesis you have to use the provided nailplate of transparent
plastic. This material can easily be shaped without being warmed up. The nail
plate may be shaped with hand tools (e.g. scissors and round-nosed orthonyx
pliers – not included in starter-kit) and rotating instruments (diamond burr).
The nail plate should fit the nail bed, particularly important is a snug
connection to the eponychium (proximal end of nail plate).
When the artificial nail plate is finished, it needs to be fastened to what is left of the natural nail with UNGUISAN® classic. The UNGUISAN® mass has to cover the entire underside of the nail plate. Not only does this ensure a strong bond to the natural nail, but it provides a truly realistic coloring of the otherwise transparent material.
The most important reason for choosing the plate prosthesis is the opportunity
of applying corrective pressure to nail bed and apex of toe. This is of
therapeutic relevance if the natural nail is very short and struggles to grow
over the nail bed. During the entire setting process of UNGUISAN® the pressure
exerted onto the nail plate has to be maintained. Thus an elevated apex of the
toe or pronounced lateral nail walls will be pressed out of the way, no longer
inhibiting the growth of the natural nail.
METHOD 2: “CASTING IN-SITU” TECHNIQUE
The “cast in-situ” method may be used for partial or total renewal of nails. It gives maximum room for creative ideas.
Mix both UNGUISAN® components as described above and apply onto nail bed.
Once the mass loses its shine it can be carefully shaped with the spatula or
the tips of your fingers. A strip of cellophane film is helpful to determine
the width, length and thickness of the artificial nail. After UNGUISAN® has
fully cured, the cellophane strip can easily be pulled off. You may now give
the new nail a final polish and a perfect finish with rotary tools (diamond
grinding wheels and tungsten-carbide-burs have proven excellent for this
purpose). You have produced an artificial nail shaped exactly as you wish.
AFTERCARE AND REMOVAL
Depending on individual circumstances, nail prostheses may be worn for several months. During this period the natural nail will grow forward, pushing the artificial nail ahead. If it needs to be shortened, it should be filed with diamond or glass files. Cutting isn’t recommended as the artificial nail may break. Nail varnish and polish removers may be used, as UNGUISAN® will not be dissolved, weakened or damaged.
After showering or bathing, patients must take care that any cavities or hollow spaces underneath the nail are thoroughly dried. The use of a hairdryer for this purpose can be recommended. In addition it is advisable to disinfect the artificial nail regularly (e.g. with UNGUISAN® nail-care concentrate)
If it is necessary to remove the nail prothesis, it has to be carefully filed down.
ADVICE FOR AVOIDING PROBLEMS WITH UNGUISAN®
If UNGUISAN® does not cure completely, but „crystallizes“ or doesn’t cure completely, there may be various reasons for this:
- the liquid hardener is no longer in order (too old, accidentally contaminated with dust or powder, stored incorrectly)
- the mixing ratio is not correct
- the mixture has not been stirred long enough
- the quantity mixed is too small (this means that the required homogeneity is not achieved during mixing)
If point 1 can be excluded, we recommend the following procedure:
Take 2 white dosage spoons of UNGUISAN® Powder. Add UNGUISAN® liquid until the mixture has a consistency similar to fresh honey. The mixture may also be slightly more liquid, but never less liquid. An exact recommendation of how many drops to use on a dosing spoon is very difficult, because the drop size changes depending on the pipette used, and external factors (temperature, humidity, etc.) influence material and chemical reaction.
Now stir carefully and thoroughly until it is ensured that powder and liquid have mixed to a homogeneous mass. In any case, the mixture must be stirred until the curing process begins. It can be observed, that the compound becomes more viscous and begins to lose its shine, i.e. becomes somewhat duller.
Only now should the compound be applied to the nail bed, there will still be enough time to shape the nail.

Nail care from the specialist.
The UNGUISAN® anti-callus tincture softens hard skin (cornification’s, on ychophosis) within the nail sulcus safely and reliably. With urea and salicylic acid, hard skin quickly becomes soft and smooth again. Uncomfortable pressure, e.g. within the lateral sulcus of the nail, are alleviated. Allantoin and calendula extract support the particularly gentle care effect.
UNGUISAN® nail-care concentrate with its special formulation allows numerous
applications. Natural ingredients like extracts from Iceland Moss and Black
Currant are combined with a Silver complex. Nails sensitive to fungus are
protected and it helps avoiding bacterial infections, too. Especially
recommended to accompany nail prosthetics and nail correction measures, as
well as a general care product for the entire nail organ.
