Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of a high-quality Insignia product. Your NS- IR10BK6 or NS-IR10BL6 represents the state of the art in steam iron design and is designed for reliable and trouble-free performance.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

When using an iron, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following:

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING

  1. Only use an iron for its intended use.
  2. To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not immerse the iron in water or other liquids.
  3. Always turn the iron OFF before plugging or unplugging the iron from the electrical outlet. Never pull on the cord to disconnect the iron from the electrical outlet; instead, grasp the plug and pull on the plug to disconnect the iron.
  4. Do not let the cord touch hot surfaces. Let the iron cool completely before putting the iron away. Coil the cord loosely around the iron when storing.
  5. Always disconnect the iron from the electrical outlet before filling the iron with water, emptying the water from the iron, and when the iron is not in use.
  6. Do not operate the iron with a damaged cord or in the event the iron has been dropped or damaged. To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble the iron. Take it to a qualified serviceman for examination and repair. Incorrect assembly might result in a risk of electric shock when the iron is used after reassembly.
  7. Close supervision is required for the iron used by or near children.
  8. Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use caution when you turn a STEAM IRON upside down – there might be hot water in the reservoir.
  9. To avoid a circuit overload, do not operate an iron on the same circuit with another high wattage appliance.
  10. The iron must not be left unattended while it is plugged in.
  11. The filling aperture must not be opened during use. Instructions for the safe refilling of the water reservoir shall be given.
  12. The iron must be used and rested on a stable surface.
  13. When placing the iron on its stand, ensure that the surface on which the stand is placed is stable.
  14. The iron is not to be used if it has been dropped, if there are visible signs of damage, or if it is leaking.
  15. Never use an extension power cord set that is not approved by a competent authority. If an extension cord is absolutely necessary, a cord with an ampere rating equal to or greater than the 15A shall be used. A cord rated for less amperage may overheat. Care shall be taken to arrange the cord so that it cannot be pulled or the iron tripped over.

Using your iron

Using your iron for the first time
Some parts of the iron have been slightly greased and, as a result, the iron may smoke slightly when turned on for the first time. This stops after a few uses.

  1. Remove any protective films or stickers from the sole plate and the body of the iron. Clean the sole plate with a soft cloth.
  2. Test the iron on an old piece of fabric to make sure that the sole plate and water reservoir are completely clean.

Setting the temperature control

  • Always check the garment label for ironing instructions before ironing the garment.
  • If the ironing instructions are missing, use the table below to set the temperature.
  • Sort your laundry into fabric types (wool with wool, cotton with cotton, and so on), then iron the fabrics requiring the lowest temperature setting first, then progress to fabrics that require higher temperatures (the iron heats up quicker than it cools down).
  • If the fabric consists of various kinds of fibers (such as cotton with polyester), always select the ironing temperature for the material with the lowest advised temperature.

Fabric Label| Fabric| Temperature dial| Steam| Burst of Steam| Spray
---|---|---|---|---|---
| Acrylic or Nylon| | No| No| Yes
| Silk or wool| | No| No| Yes
| Polyester| | No| No| Yes
| Cotton or linen| | No| No| Yes
| If you see this label on your garment, it means that it cannot be ironed. DO NOT IRON.

Dry ironing

  1. Stand the iron upright and plug it in.
  2. Turn the temperature control dial to the setting you want.
  3. Set the steam control knob is set to 0.
  4. The temperature indicator turns off when the temperature you want is reached. The iron is ready for use.

Steam ironing
The steam feature can only be used at higher ironing temperatures. Use the following settings:
 Use for moderate steam
 Use for maximum steam

  1. Open the water inlet cover and fill the iron with water.
  2. Stand the iron upright and plug it in.
  3. Turn the temperature control dial to the setting you want.
  4. The temperature indicator turns off when the temperature you want is reached. The iron is ready for use.
  5. Turn the steam control to the required position. Steam starts coming from the holes in the sole plate.

Note
With conventional steam ironing, water may leak from the sole plate if you have selected too low a temperature. If this happens, turn the temperature control dial to a higher setting. Steam will be produced as soon as the appropriate temperature has been reached.

Choosing the water

  • This iron can be used with normal tap water.
  • If the water in your area is particularly hard, use distilled or demineralized water.
  • Do not use chemically descaled water or any other liquids.

Filling the iron

  1. Set the steam control knob to 0 and the temperature control dial to OFF.
  2. Unplug the iron from the wall outlet and wait for the iron to cool down.
  3. Pour water into the water inlet up to the MAX level of the water reservoir.
  4. Plug in your iron and stand it upright.
  5. Turn the temperature control dial to the desired temperature setting. The temperature indicator turns on.
  6. When the correct temperature is reached, the temperature indicator turns off. The temperature indicator turns on and off periodically when the iron turns on or off to maintain the set temperature.

Spraying the fabric
You can use the spray feature at any time to help eliminate wrinkles. It does not affect the temperature of the iron.

  1. Open the water inlet cover and fill the iron with water.
  2. Aim the spray nozzle at the garment.
  3. Press the spray pump.

Using the Burst of Steam
This feature provides an extra amount of steam to help remove stubborn wrinkles.

  1. Open the water inlet cover and fill the iron with water.
  2. Stand the iron upright and plug it in.
  3. Turn the temperature control dial to the maximum setting.
  4. The temperature indicator turns off when the temperature you want is reached. The iron is ready for use.
  5. Press the Burst of Steam pump. Steam penetrates the garment and remove stubborn wrinkles.
  6. Press the Burst of Steam pump a second or third time. Usually, all wrinkles can be removed within three steam bursts. For best results, wait three seconds between each burst.

Cleaning and maintaining your iron

Using the self-clean function
You can use the self-clean function to remove scale and impurities from your iron. The self-clean function should be used approximately once every two weeks. If the water in your area is very hard, the self-clean function should be used more frequently.

  1. Unplug the iron.
  2. Set the steam control knob to the self-clean position.
  3. Open the water inlet cover and fill the iron with water.
  4. Select the maximum ironing temperature.
  5. Plug in the iron.
  6. When the temperature indicator turns off, unplug the iron.
  7. Hold the iron over the sink, then press and hold the self-clean button and gently shake the iron. Steam and boiling water come out of the sole plate and any impurities and flakes are flushed out.
  8. Release the self-clean button as soon as all water in the reservoir has been drained.
  9. Repeat the self-clean process if the iron still contains a lot of impurities.

Note
In addition to a self-clean function, your iron features an anti-scale cartridge, which reduces scale deposits in the iron and prolongs its operational life. The anti-scale system is an integral part of your iron and does not require any maintenance.

Cleaning the exterior of your iron
Turn the temperature control dial to OFF, then unplug the iron and let it cool down completely. Deposits and other residues on the sole plate can be removed with a cloth soaked in a vinegar/water solution. The casing may the wiped with a damp cloth and then polished with a dry one.

Notes

  • Never use any abrasives to clean the sole plate.
  • Keep the sole plate smooth. Avoid contact with metal objects.

Storing your iron

  1. Turn the temperature control dial to OFF and set the steam control knob to 0 (no steam).
  2. Unplug the iron.
  3. Pour any remaining water out of the water reservoir.
  4. Stand the iron upright and let it cool down completely.
  5. Wind the power cord around the iron.
  6. Always store the iron in an upright position.

Safety protective cut-out
In the unlikely event of the thermostat failing, the protective cut-out operates to prevent the iron from overheating. If that occurs, the iron should be taken to the nearest authorized service facility.
