PoEWit How To Setup VLAN Hybrid Ports On NS-8B and NS-24B
Background
Background- A network setup using VLANs composes of a Layer 3 device (typically a Router) that support 802.1Q tagging which allows for tagging to the frame headers of a frame. This tagged frame header is added and removed at the trunk/hybrid port of each respective switch/Layer 3 device (router) in the topology. VLAN protocols operates on Layer 2, while some parts of VLAN protocols, such as the Switch Virtual Interface (SVI) operates on Layer 3. This is also known as a default gateway for a specific VLAN. The Layer 3 device (or Router) must support 802.1Q tagging and be configured where a single port can allow for multiple VLANs to be tagged. Ie: VLAN’s 2, 3, 4, etc are membership VLANs thus producing the topology “router on a stick”.
A managed switch is connected to the router. The uplink port(s) on the switch connected to the router must be configured as to match the configuration of the port on Layer 3 device (Router) side. The rest of the ports on the switch can be configured for VLAN memberships as tagged or untagged as needed for your various VLANs. Ie: VLANs- 2, 3, 4, and so on.
IMPORTANT- after finishing configuring the switch, MUST go to TOOLS/SAVE CONFIGURATION and hit SAVE, otherwise, all configurations will be lost.
INSTRUCTION FOR USE
-
Log on to the website for the Switch. (Instruction for accessing the website browser is https://poewit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/NS-8B_QS.pdf). Note the Default IP address is 192.168.0.1, and the default userame and password is admin/admin.
-
Next, Setup VLAN ID from VLAN Configuration Page. VLAN 1 is setup by default. Add membership subnets- 2, 3, 4, etc.
-
Go to Hybrid Port to setup the management network, or in other words- VLAN 1. Have to select each port, that you want to be VLAN1. In the image below, we are setting up port 1 to be on VLAN1. Repeat for every port you want to be on VLAN1.
-
Next to setup ports that belong to a membership VLAN, Go to Access Port port. From this page, select the port and VLAN that port is a member and hit apply. In the example below, we are selecting port 13 to be a member of VLAN 4. Repeat this setup for all ports and it’s VLAN membership.
-
Note- the Trunk Port page is not used in these configuration.
-
Finally, MUST go to TOOLS/SAVE CONFIGURATION and hit SAVE, otherwise, all configurations will be lost.
